I still think it could be a sequel, but I am going to say prequel just because it apears to be morning in the game which would symbolise the begining of an age.

Now that you saw the footage, is it a Prequel or Sequel?

I have a suspicion that one of the places was the painted world or a place that was created by Ariamis. For that reason I am going to say that the game is set in the past.
Alternatively, the fur on the character suggests a rather cold place and the dark is an absence of fire so I can see why people would suggest that the game takes place in the future.

From these options I have to give my vote prequel, because from what we have seen so far would support that, BUT I don't think DkS2 is connected to DkS.

I don't really get this conversation. Have the developers actually stated anywhere that the two games are connected?
People talk about Anor Londo and Painting world but I really don't see any similarities in the locations in DkS and the footage we've seen. Only thing that looks something from DkS is the rope bridge and its a pretty standard rope bridge.

It is possible that it is before the flame is lit. You succeed Gwyn, so maybe Gwyn was a chosen undead originally. A lot of people are going to complain that that means you're a set character, but I doubt they'd do that. I'd kind of just assume that once you ascend to godhood you kind of choose a new name, like you're being reborn.

The main armor present in the trailer and gameplay is based off of older helm designs. T-Slit helms were used typically from around the time of the Greeks up until full plate armor became more advanced and Facial Visors were added which covered the entire face and could be lifted. The ridge on top of the helm was common in use for marking the rank of a soldier back in the day or for adding a little bit of metal to try and absorb a straight on blow. This was before they focused much more on reducing the area of a single surface which reduces the impact of an attack.
If I had to go off of any of the sets shown the only thing I can link is Anor Londo and the Dragon Castle due to their incredibly similar architecture. However that could just be a standard in the world at the time those areas were constructed.
Based off this I can say I have absolutely no clue. The armor might just be an old set, or your character might be from the past and is in the future. There are a lot of options which make it simple that the game could take place during, after, or before Dark Souls.

well the first thing I see people getting wrong is that they think is still takes place in Lordran which it doesnt it takes place in the human world this also makes me think that the game could be a sequel showing the impact on the world after the first game or it could take place at the same time and is showing how the human world looked

The devs said DkS2 isnt in Lordran. . .but neither is the painted world as far as I know. Ok, the painting is, but the name itself 'Painted WORLD' suggests separation from the world youre in i.e Lordran.
Totally undecided if its in the past, present or future, but the Ariamis bridge, the intentional promo angle thats exactly like Painted world in DkS, and the castle at the end kinda hints at it being the same. Also, no idea if its the same castle, but in the 12 min vid, there's a corridor thats got loads of paintings in it (tenuous I know), but this could be something to do with Ariamis' love of Art, putting loads in his castle, his castle 'painting' being the link to the painted world for whatever reason (banished by seath?)

No, but I would think the existence of bonfires suggests strongly a connection. Now, if it's a prequel or a sequel I have no clue. The footage I've seen seems to suggest prequel but I just don't know.

I'm pretty dead set on a sequel. Can we just accept that it is very likely that this does not take place during the Dragon Wars. "You are the Undead" pretty blatantly says that the darksign+curse of the undead is in effect; thus, it cannot take place with the dragons because there was no darksign at that time.
And to those who say it does not take place in Lordran..Thank you! It is unbelievable how many people think that you'll go to Anor Londo or something just because the castle in the first trailer looks similar (look again guys it's the "Mansion of the Dragons."

Why would they canonize the Link the Fire ending and completely brush aside the Dark Lord ending?

I've thought this myself as well. I'm just going with what is in the trailers+demo. Bonfires obviously prove some existence of the curse still being around. Perhaps our hero is the last of the undead?

I wonder what explains the explosion in the dragon (drake?) population then.

What everyone has to remember is that the war against the dragons was a war against the Everlasting Stone Dragons NOT every dragon type creature. It's possible that in the absence of whatever scientists that lived in the mansion the wyverns escaped and repopulated it making it a hive.
