Post by BIG TIME MASTER Sat Apr 06, 2013 4:59 pm

Didn't I remember Miyazaki making some statement about how there shouldn't be a sequel to the Souls games?

I think he was right, IIRC him saying that, because no matter how great DKSII can be, it cannot have the key element that made DKS and DES great, which is the joy of learning. They can give us more of the same and clean things up and move things around a little, which will be fine, but it will be a let down to anymore expecting more.

If they drastically change the formula but not the name, things will just not seem right.

I get that DKS is just a more realized version of DES, but if DKSII continues the trend the series will destroy itself for profit.

I think Miyazaki has the wisdom to know when to let the party end, good things can't go on forever. I bet the next title he directs will be as stunning as DKS/DES, but to be so it has to be something new.

I'm a little bummed that I'm not going to get to play DKS II, but I think in the end it will be better this way.

It's like if you eat this really awesome steak at this really awesome restaurant just once, you will always remember it being absolutely awesome. But it you keep going back to the restaurant, week after week, eventually it's just gonna be another bland, boring chunk of dead animal that you're not super excited about eating.

I have my doubts too. Later, when it comes out, marriage comes closer, studies get harder, and I will have to do more work. I have no idea if I will find the time to play it or not.

Why can't you play Dark Souls II when it comes out?

You don't remember that because he didn't say it.

He said he wouldn't care either way if Dark Souls 8 came out.

i know what you mean...I was really excited about hearing about DkSII, but after more careful consideration, it seems it would be a DkSv.1.5 type, but I'm still having some hope that it might be genuinely reinvented but still familiar...which is asking a lot

Why I fell in love with the series, was because it was a huge change in pace[gameplay] from the hundreds of monotonous video games... and story wise, was of the best. Only because I feel like some archeologist/anthropologist who is discovering some ancient civilizations from a long lost period. Granted, there are a handful of great games, but this one just stood out so much for me.

That's what I love about how the story is told (or not told). A video game story should be discovered and experienced, not told by cutscenes and dialogue. That's for movies.

A lot of games are following the "interactive narrative" trend. It seems like almost all AAA games that come out do this now. I don't like it at all.

New director of Dark Souls 2 said they are going to use as little cutscenes as possible like it was in the original, so no worries,

Nope. I mean Dark Souls because sequel is Dark Souls 2 not Demon's Souls 2, but sure same goes for Demon's too.

I think they'll be able to keep nurturing an reinventing the game each time, and keep it nice and fresh.

I'm sure the core will be kept, but other things mixed up a tad just to make them all unique..

To be honest even if another one came out but was only a tiny bit different I still wouldn't care, thats simply because the format of the game is so enjoyable and exhilarating.

I think the new co-directors are set to do really great things for the plot. Seeing the same character archetypes is getting old. So long as they don't touch the way the story is told, I'll be ok.

Bamco, of course, is completely screwing up their marketing strategy. They really don't get it.

i dont get why ppl always hate on sequels saying it makes them bland, no it doesnt they dont have to change the gameplay they could change the story sequels are always good even if theyre not as good as the last. Example, the Final Fantasy Series. they are all completely different except direct sequels, but technically they are ALL sequels because they share the same name. none have the same gameplay or story yet they are all great games and will probably continue to live on for a long LONG time.

Sequels aren't always good. That's ridiculous.

Minus the obvious ones, the Final Fantasies aren't sequels. Their stories don't follow a sequence.

But I do see what you mean. The biggest concerns stem from the new directors. We still don't know whether or not they get what the Souls series is about. Bamco sure as hell doesn't, so the marketing messages we've received thus far have of course worried a lot of us.

But like I said earlier, we'll just wait and see. Hopefully we'll get some gameplay on Thursday.
