spear help plz

im sick of losing to spear, everytime i face them i lose i need help any tips on how to combat any spear?

Spears are hard to fight, if they are good i.e. they poke once then roll back, then even harder, the most important thing is to be patient because is gonna be a long fight (hopefully). I use a bow with poison arrows, hopefully they will make a mistake allowing you to bs them. 61 poise will be your friend.

Are they one-handing it with a shield? Block to get in close without taking much damage. Then unlock and run in for a BS. If i fast roll and i'm using a weapon with a low risk running attack, that is how I always do it. It works against most spear users. If i ninja flip, i try to predict their attack and go for a roll bs. I also use poison arrows and sometimes pyromancy if they're stupid and get too close. Shotel r2 only if they are almost dead and start to turtle. Also, sometimes they are stupid and attack you if you dash near them, and that's your chance to go for a lucky parry. But if they are not falling for that trick, don't try it too many times because it is way too easy to punish with a bs or a combustion/dark bead to face.

Unlocking seem to be much more effective than locked when fighting spears, if you lock you get caught right in the thrust no matter where you go, while you can move much faster and more freely when unlocked.

Useless. You're going to get lagshotted like crazy if you do that, they'll keep jabbing the empty space you backed away from 2s ago and you'll take massive damage from it.

You have to press right up against them and force them to make a mistake (poking into a parry)/ or stagger them. They can only roll so many times, they are bound to go into an attack/counter-BS sooner or later and you can exploit that.

Attack when you think they are going to attack, not when they already have attacked. You have to be careful with stamina management and sometimes block instead of dodge or vice versa. Green blossom, dwgr and good shield (high stability) help.

FinPeku has made some very fine points on spear counters. And he knows what he's talking about because he's run into quite a few spear users including me. But where these points are valid they will not be against a veteran player. You may want to start training to use a spear yourself. To counter distance fighters its better to use their tactics in return. Now if the person is not a veteran player and R1 spams then Fin's advice will do just perfect. But if he knows how to fight and is a patience counter fighter then you will be dead. Spells with a large range of damage will help some but when you get predictable with them you will be BS rolled to death. If you roll or lure bs you will be countered in return. Patience and knowing your opponent will serve you well in this kind of fight. You have to be able to adapt on the fly to any kind of fighter you face. So practice practice practice and learn learn learn all the weapons and how to use them. That way you can adjust on the fly during a fight because you should never assume the person you are fighting is not a skilled veteran player. Thats how I approach my fights against every opponent, including FinPeku who is a good knowledgable fighter. Just my opin

It depends on the type of spear user.

If it's a turtle, then you can wait until they poke 2-3 times and then try and break their guard. Or you can bs fish(it's really easy against pokers.

If they're carrying it in 2 hands and spamming R1, then you can parry. Keep your shield up til you're close enough to attack. There's a lot of things.
