    Dark souls after Demon's souls

Post by morte on Sat Mar 30, 2013 6:14 pm

Those of you who have played Dark Souls and Demon's Souls, what was the experience of going from one game to the other like? Did you get the same unknown and difficulty and the same feel of mystery and danger as your first souls game or was it different? I put this in the DkSII forum since I am wondering if people think that they'll get the same experience with DkSII as they got for DkSI and am using DaS to DkSI as reference.

To me, the experience was like going into a blanket of fog. I didn't know where to go, what to do, where to go first, how to kill the Crestfallen Warrior happy, and how to find good weapons and armour.

So, do you think that there will be a similar experience when playing Dark Souls II?

Offtopic: I'm thinking about pre-ordering so I am stuck with a blind run (I'm far too weak to resist the use of a wiki) how about you?

I imagine there will be a similar experience, yes.

Also, I am getting Dark Souls 2, I know that. I just don't know what system to get it on. Xbox, or PC?

I went from dark to demons- it's just not the same.

The first playthrough of a souls game where you're totally lost, don't know where to go and get killed by everything is always the best. My first playthrough of demons, it was fun, a bit scary at first.. But to be honest I did just find it a little easy.

You'll never get the same helpless feeling again, but still going through new stuff I'd never done was still a little intimidating and still very fun happy

Never played Demons Souls... but Kings Field, another IP of From, can work for an example here. The more things change, the more they stay the same. After Kings Field, if you pick up another game that operates the same way, like KF III. it will never be as hard as the first time you picked up the IP.

I've heard good things about other From games. The one thing I hate about From: they don't have enough PC games! Dark souls was a simple port, and I think that DkSII is their first one designed for PC as well.

I know. It's a growing industry, I think, or at the very least was previously unrepresented. Plus, nothing's better than having a gaming platform that can be built at home with parts from older gaming platforms.
    Spoiler:
not that I can, but it's the principle of the thing.

PC gaming? PC gaming has been strong for years!

To be honest though It was mostly stuff like sims, rts, MMOs etc that were on there, now all sorts of stuff is on there..

I think I also have to credit steam- the number of PC gaming people has increased dramatically. Valve, you're a friggin genius.

    I played Demon's first...it was awesome.

Then I played Dark...it was awesome...but the Demon's Souls community ruined it for awhile.

When I play DkS2...it will be awesome and without the oldcommunity to ruin it. cheers

I wasn't online during the start of Dark Souls. How did the Demon's community ruin it?

There was a huge uproar about the p2p system to start with.

At release, it was almost impossible to summon certain people no matter what you tried. A lot of us got together and were trying different summoning techniques.

However, most of the DeS community wouldn't hear of it. We would say, "Well not summoning by bonfires seems to work most of the time." Then they would turn around and say, "It took me 5 minutes to summon my friend, it was instant in DeS...this is ****!!!" Then of course I would respond with, "You're gonna sit down and play a game for 4, maybe 5 hours but you can't wait 5 minutes for your friend???"...

...I made a lot of enemies...imagine that.

Then it was how slow the combat was in comparison. A common gripe was, "The weapons are too slow!!! These won't work in pvp!!!" Then of course Iwould reply with, "They're slow for everyone, hence they will work for EVERYONE. "...

    ...then more enemies were made.

Then once the summoning system was adjusted, it was "I'd prefer to have the Nexus back."...it was a never ending cycle.

In end it ruined the premier for everyone. Only the die hards stuck it out, experimented, created petitions/requests and submitted them to FROM and Namco. We made a difference and had a lot of influence in the game you guys see today.

Sadly, some of us left the old wiki out of grief. Some of us stayed in touch, changed our tags, etcetcetc. Some people here are from the old wiki. It was good to see some familiar faces when I came here.

Also, some of us had a REALLY bad taste in our mouth from the old wiki experience. I still portray it sometimes. I really only lash out when someone takes an encompassing comment and turns it into ********.

Like earlier, I make one small comment about kids being lazy and it turns into people saying, "They never liked me anyway" blah blah blah. Well sorry folks, but I dont back down from a fight, and if I think someone is an ***, Ieither send a pm saying that EXACT thing, or punk them out in a thread.

It matters not though. I am here for one thing. I want an early jump on Dark Souls 2. I helped turn Dark Souls into what it is today, and I plan on being a part of the testing when Dark Souls 2 comes out. I'll also help in being influential in the patches that need to be implemented when it comes out, as well as using the same petitioning practices that seemed to get their attention before.

No one person can make a large ripple, but if you get people jumping together, then the ripples widen...thats why I'm here. And thats why I have a grudge against a lot of DeS vets, and thats why I'm a little gruff sometimes.

My personal experience of going to Dark Souls from Demon's Souls was that I felt Dark Souls was easy to get a hold on due to my past encounter with the same style game, Demon's Souls. The main thing I loved about going to Dark was that it was a new journey with new enemies, armors and spells and what not. That is what I am looking forward to mainly for Dark 2.

As for my first xperience for the whole franchise was Demon's Souls was hard as hell >.< I made the worst most confusing character build was using heavy armor a pick axe and a huge shield before i created a new character and did things right lol. The lack of knowledge made the whole thing a learning experience and that is what the Souls games are about.

I hope that Dark 2 will be an even greater learning adventure. I want to see so many different things that will actually make you stop and think about. Whether it be how to defeat a boss or how the hell that black phantom did that spell or obtained that weapon. Sometimes I wish i could forget everything I know about the Souls games so I could relive the whole new quest.

Yeh I started with Demon Souls and my first character was just awful. I think I killed the phalanx boss (which was bloody difficult at the time) and then gave up for a month or so on the whole game. I finally came back and was like "I'm going to do this properly damnit!" and struggled through the whole game on a new character. The bosses were brilliant (3-3 boss being another online player, 4-3 finding the sword in the boss area, 5-3 making me feel like a d*** for killing the boss, 1-2 making me feel so weak and small but so mighty when I won, 2-1 for scaring the s*** out of me. Demons Souls definately had better bosses imo and the areas had a lot more atmosphere which I hope they try and recapture in DKII.

Dark Souls was still challenging and parrying and backstabbing had slightly different timings but I definitely felt more comfortable from the start. I knew roughly what build I was going for and how to approach most enemies as stated earlier BS and P will kill most easily which is something I hope they change with counter parries or counter backstab capes or something for offline enemies at least. I still think blightown was the best area because it's the one that made me feel insecure, I could fall, I could get poisoned at any time, I have no idea where the next bonfire is or where the area was leading to but at the same time there was really awesome loot and a sense of achievement that defined the game. Still the whole game felt easier especially after you get past Ornstein and Smough.

With DKII I plan on doing an offline run with no guide/wiki to making it as challenging as possible. Once I beat every boss on my own, I'll look at playing online with covenants and invasions etc but hopefully that will give From some time to fix the worst of the bugs.I'm also going to try and investigate a lot of the lore (read item descriptions, talk to NPC's, study item locations etc) as the lore is what kept me playing Dark Souls and this time I want to discover it more myself rather than just have ENB tell me it (although I owe ENB a lot for getting me into the lore in the first place). Overall I have high hopes that Dark Souls II will live up to its predecessors and combine the best elements of them although the original difficult of that first Demons Souls play through (Both the total fail and the extremely long but ultimately successful play through).

I had an unusual experience with the Souls series so far.

I began with Demon's Souls on release day and found the game unbearably difficult. Well, almost, as I could never stop playing and eventually conquered every scrap of challenge in the game and was even fairly good at PvP (enough that two years later people in the PvP community still recognized my name).

I only played DeS for about five months however and then I put it aside in order to play many other games, non as challenging or great as DeS. When it came time to play DkS I found the brutality returned in full. In fact, I found DkS to be much harder and had a heck of a time relearning what I had from DeS. Eventually both games become familiar again and now neither of them feels like a challenge.

Depending on when DkS2 is released will really make the difference if the game will feel fresh, or difficult, or not. The subtracted interference also this time is that my life has changed a lot since then, and I doubt if I will play many new games between now and then. I only plan on purchasing one title this year, and so I don't feel as if I am missing out on anything. Of course, that depends on when DkS2 comes out as well. Part of me hopes it is this year, but I'd rather the development be more complete this time, so that we see it in October 2014.
