How do I counter an ax build?

Post by Satoshi on Tue Mar 26, 2013 9:12 pm

My friend and I have tons of fun dueling each other, but he is an amazing player(compared to me.) His build is a strength/dexterity build. He ONLY uses axes, or rarely a rapier. He often uses the Black Knight, Demon, and Dragon King Greataxe. Occasionally dual wielding them. I keep forgetting his armor though.

Does anyone know how to counter this? By strategy rather than a new build. My (main) build is this.

    https://mugenmonkey.com/darksouls/?c=394843251413077296

I can occasionally beat him by switching weapons up. His only switches are those three. I occasionally switch the shield and flame with the Shotel and Quelaag's furysword for off-hand distractions. The halberd is key to my strategy, but I am willing to change my Uchigatana for a different weapon as long as I do not go over 25%

I also occasionally unequip the shield in order to use heavier weapons, such as the Zweihander or Claymore.

Axes are slow with narrow(I think) windows. If you can't get the counter, then try out ranging him. Spears, halberds, and maybe the Washing pole will all be able to win over an axe if you can keep the perfect distance.

Other than that, you can always try double handing a fast weapon, roll under the axe swing, hit, then roll away.

Memorize the amount of swings he can use on one stamina bar.

By narrow, do you mean that the pole to the tip of the blade, not counting the blades, is the hit box?

Half of my wins were from using the halberd correctly by attacking him while he recovers from hitting the ground.

I was thinking about using the Avelyn to exploit his lack of ranged combat.

That set... Were you in the township earlier today, fighting a Man-serpent greatsword wielding, boar and artorias armor wearing host, earlier today by chance?

No. I revised this less than an hour ago due to weight problems.

By narrow I mean if you want you could probably backstab him.

The halberd would be a good choice. In fact, If I were to fight him I would use a demonslayer spear/silver knight spear/Pike(the 3 longest and strongest spears in the game), and an avelyn. All to outrange him.

Make sure to have a sturdy shield ready to block an attack because you can expect him to charge you after a very short while.

I like it. I will practice with that weapon set for a while. I have a question though, you said I need a sturdy shield, but didn't change it. Is the Black Knight Shield good enough, or do you have a recommendation?

Black knight is good enough. IF you want the absolute highest defense then try silver or balder shielder. They only have 2 and 1 more stability though so the difference might not even be noticeable.

Edit: Oh. And make sure to change your armor around to get more defense, but stay below 25%. The speed will help you.

Ahh, I've been dual-wielding axes lately and have found that pyromancy is the bane of my existence, seeing as I mid roll with how heavy axes are. I tend to get caught in the chaos type pyros aftermaths. I don't really have a problem with people who use ranged attacks since my right hand axe is a Golem axe. Spears I can deal with to an extent but they can become unmanageable when they are relentlessly spammed or when I attempt to block and end up having my guard broken.

I wouldn't recommend trying to backstab unless you are sure you can get it. People end up getting stun-locked due to my left hand great axe. I have been ninja-flipped backstabbed on many occasions, so that might be something you can go for.

I'm not very good with forums since I have trouble wording what I'd like to say, but I hope this could help in the slightest. Wish you luck!

The Demon's spear puts out better damage at reasonable stat levels compared to the dragonslayer. And specifically at HIS stats Demon's Spear and SKS are the top options for spears IMO.

But then I have a thing against the pike, I hate hate hate it's running attack.

Okay great axes. They swing big and slow, get the heck outta the way (roll to a side not backwards) rolling attack out of the roll should hit him. Repeat. Just wait for him to swing every time. Greataxes are best when trading or reacting(usually in order to trade)

@OP, outrange him or bait him with arrows and when he comes charging in, roll bs him. It's not a pretty plan but it's an effective strategy.

@Madrave Your build reminds me of mine although mine is SL150

With these four axes, i rarely get bsed but you're right about those pyros and sorceries, lots of problems with them.

Well dang, if you only knew how close your build exactly is to mine. Ahaha.

    http://mmdks.com/1lw5

And the bow tactic works. But since I off-hand a comp bow as well it's not too effective on me. But I'm not sure if the OP's friend off-hands one as well. In the end it comes down to range and if he mid rolls or not.

^ Off-hand means using it in your left hand, lol. Also, you have 45 dex but no pyros? =(

Ahh, I think I meant off-hand as secondary aha. And no. I was never a fan of Pyromancies or Sorceries. I had/have a tendency to overshoot a spell and end up scratching my head in confusion. With the same build I also use two other sets of gear, but I think I'm derailing the topic so I need to go re-read the rules.

rollstabs, dwgr, tons of poise, spears.. those are probably the easiest.

best way to anti axe it is
    1. get a poking weapon or ranged
    2. magic they leave themselvs open when swinging
3 parry, they have a huge window
