Something I like to do as a Host... am I weird?

I don't summon people often...

But when I do....

(forgive the meme, lol)

.....anyways.

When I do summon people, I like to make a run-through of the place, killing off any especially dangerous things that don't respawn, I like to trigger the shotcuts, grab whatever loot I can find/am interested in, and then I'll go back and rest at the bonfire near where the summoning signs are placed for whatever boss I want help with.

That way... if I get invaded, I don't have to worry about more dangerous-than-usual mobs interfering (like the titanite Demon in AL, the Channeller in the Parish, etc etc etc). Also, the phantom(s) I summon get a nice quick run at the boss and any medals they might be going after without a bunch of doinking around trying to open shortcuts (leaving us more time for someone to invade).

And at the very least, I always open the AL shortcuts so they don't have to go through the Hell of the Archer Ledge any more than absolutely necessary.

I'm probably like a Sunbro's best friend, I'd imagine.

How many other people actually put the work in to make a phantom's life easy?

Yeah, that's SOP for me, especially in the painted world. I figure people don't want to watch me pick up loot and open doors for ten minutes before the boss fight. Although, I notice that when I set a sign I often enjoy going through the whole place killing all the enemies. There are some places that I cringe when I see that the shortcut isn't open though, Duke's Archives comes to mind. Of course, I hate it when a host tries to do a total speed run because that rarely works with more than one person.

You're not weird. I do the same thing if I want to summon someone for a boss fight.

If I am summoned by someone and the shortcuts aren't open, I assume they are a newer player.

I have come to realize that there are some people who don't want the shortcuts open so I'll stand back and let the host open it, if they wish.

It depends. Sometimes I just wanna kill the boss collect my souls and get home to level up. Other times I like wandering around an area with a host, picking up all the little secrety things, clearing every enemy out ect.

Usually only in AL do I make sure I have shortcuts open, I probably would in the PW too but I never summon anyone there ever.

That's not weird, just very strategic. You're only making sure nothing unnecessary happens to you before getting invaded.

Because they are likely to be gankers who make fruitless attempts to get a kill with the help of a tough enemy.

^ No, I mean when a host summons a phantom to help with the whole level and not just the boss they will get hatemail from the person they summoned.

It is so annoying when a host wants to run through and get every little item. Dang kill the boss then do your exploration. Phantoms are there to help you get to and kill the boss thats it.

I think the phantoms should help the host with the entire level, but some people, including a lot of people on this forum, don't agree.

I wish I was summoned by more people like you

Sometimes I go by myself to avoid invaders, but I'm not afraid to get help for the whole level. I don't care how many phantoms I get that run straight to the boss door or send me hatemail.

I imagine some are trying to get heir humanity and souls fix. Personally i don't mind helping although i was stuck with some dude yesterday who ran around the whole parish area 2-3 times.

Souls isn't an excuse. A phantom will get more souls by doing the whole level then only the boss.

He must've been new. When I get summoned by someone that looks lost I'll try to point them in the right direction. I'll even be the leader if I have to, but I'll also lead them to invasion spots and item pickups.

Ah, I gotcha, my mistake. Answering your previous question, the phantoms are there to help you, not just with Boss fights, in general as well. This is my opinion, however. It's depending on what you're doing, I guess. I can only say that the invader has to know what he/she is doing.

I never knew people got mad at hosts who took their time o_O that's really dumb lol.

When I'm summoned I just follow wherever the host goes, unles it's clear he's lost, then I'll lead for a little bit and hand the reins back when we're heading in the right direction.

Sorry, I realized just now my first post had nothing to really do with the topic. That's a really smart idea, keep doing it o-o.

Pretty much same here. I try to assess what the host "knows" or wants to do. If they clearly, haven't a clue, I lead. If they lead, I follow.
I like to do the whole level, more time to get invaded. I Love Invaders.

I also much prefer to run the entire level with the host, including for invaders. I actually get disappointed when I get summoned in AL and the cathedral doors are already open. I've killed most of the bosses in the game probably 250+ times so what I find fun about jolly coop is jolly coop, not just sprinting to the end and blowing up a boss in 2 minutes. That's why in AL for example I always put my sign down right at the entrance; anyone who does that is signing up for a full run if that's what the host needs. If you just want the boss/humanity/souls etc, put your sign right at the end near the boss fog.

The thing about that is, is that most people who need help are those who are not godly at Dark Souls -- they probably don't want to spend any more time in Human form than they absolutely must (to prevent unwanted invasions), so they will very likely try to clear the level as a Hallow so they can't get invaded.

Then, when they get to the boss (especially O&S, I still can't do solo), they want some help with just the boss, so they'll summon and sprint to the boss door hoping to get it done and over with before someone invades.

Especially when so many invaders have ridiculously good gear. If the majority of invaders were wearing similar stuff that most people progressing through the game on their first playthrough wore, then I bet more people wouldn't mind getting invaded so much.

Personally when I'm not super awesomely geared and I see the "_____ has invaded" message, I do a little groan inside because this guy probably has 1400+ health and can kill me in 2-3 hits flat.

If a miracle should happen and the guy is similar geared to me, then it is awesome fun... not so fun when someone runs up to me with a lightning falchion and ninja-flipping....
