Post by Soris Ice Goldwing on Thu Mar 21, 2013 9:02 pm

    Welcome to Gensokyo!
Welcome outsider to the world outside your own! How did you get here? Well that doesn't matter as you can now learn about the Wonderful (and dangerous) world of Touhou!
A little backstory: Touhou was the Japanese bullet hell (danmaku) game creation of Zun as his one-man developer team called Team Shanghai Alice in 1996. Also called Project Shrine Maiden, the series took off in fame when the six game called: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil came out for Windows in August 2002. Since then the series has massive amount of fans who love the series and the creative freedom given by Zun. In fact the fan service is so large and diverse that in 2010 the series holds the world record of "Most Prolific Fan-Made Shooter series". You will find a massive collection of fan-work that will stun you! In fact the fans even named two mid-boss characters in the six game!

Today there are 13 main games and a number of mini-games in the decimal numbers. So many different spin-offs of other popular games like Touhouvania (Castlevania spin-off) and so much more. Don't like the games that much? Well then enjoy the music that ZUN created on his own with the official stage themes and character themes and their hundreds of remixes! With Touhou and music you will certainly find a remix that fits in your favorite music genre. Artwork is also an amazing part of the series too! While ZUN has his form, many artist have created thousands of their own work of the series that any art lover will certainly take a liking to. Have fun!

    Spoiler:
    Mask in his genius!

I think I'm gonna go have some fun replaying through the games I have of this wonderful series. And I heartily encourage more people to start with the 6th game, as it's availability is considerably higher than the previous ones. To sum up what I just said? This series is amazing, buy everything you can related to it now, readers of this thread.

I know absolutely nothing about this series besides the fact that Cirno exists. What's the plot?

I remember the 11# Subterranean Animism on lunatic....I think I was crazy at the time, or Koishi's subconscious powers made me play through the whole thing.

Let's get a nice, big explanation here:
The plots of the Touhou Project revolve around the strange phenomena that occur in the fictional realm of Gensokyo (幻想郷 Gensōkyō?, literally Illusion Village or Fantasy Village), which ZUN designed with a human village in the grounds of some remote mountain recesses in Japan. Originally, it was simply called "a remote separated land of a human village in an eastern country." Long before the Touhou Project's story begins, there lived many non-humans like yōkai as well as some humans in the area. After a few humans lost their way into Gensokyo, humans became afraid of approaching this area, although others settled here for the sake of yōkai extermination. However, as time went on, humans developed civilization and multiplied in number, and thus the yōkai became distressed about how this would affect the balance between humans and yōkai. Thus, 500 years before The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil (EoSD), the yōkai sage Yukari Yakumo developed the "boundary of phantasm and substance," which was favored by the yōkai and protected the balance. This was called the "Yōkai Expansion Project" and made Gensokyo a phantasmal world that automatically called out to the weakened yōkai of the outside world. Other things that disappear from the outside world, like extinct animals, lost tools, and architecture, also became abundant in Gensokyo. Since Gensokyo was a plot of land in Japan that was separated by a barrier, it is Japan that is immediately outside of this barrier.
As a result of the seal, Gensokyo became inaccessible from the outside world, and similarly, those in Gensokyo were unable to leave. Gensokyo's existence could not be confirmed from the outside world, nor could the outside world be confirmed within Gensokyo. As a result, the isolated community developed its own civilization, different from that of the outside world. Although separated by a barrier, it is a bordering world to its outside, as opposed to being in a parallel universe. There are no seas in Gensokyo, since it is an inland mountain. In Gensokyo, there are few humans, and various kinds of yōkai. Some species include magicians, beasts, therianthropies, vampires, bōrei, tengu, kappa, and yōkai (a kind of miscellaneous group). There are others species that could be yōkai depending on definition, like fairies, spirits, yūrei, onryō, poltergeists, hermits, oni, and gods.

That's most of it. Expect it was the Hakurei Border which sealed off the region, not Yukari, from the fighting till 1884 A.D., when the Barrier was made to seal the region from a growing scientific world. Today the only way to get into Gensokyo is to find the gateway which is the Hakurei Shrine, currently run by Reimu Hakurei.

It may be a while. Dark Souls has saved me a lot of money on video games for a few months now.

I'll report back here if that changes, though.

Well then two things: First your computer needs to handle a screen of bullets coming at you. many higher stage bosses will fill a screen and cause a bit of lag. Second you will need an English patch if you want to understand what they are saying.

Wait so this Touhou thing was never based off of an anime?

That's some impressive fandom you've got there, I'll have to see if I can find any of the games so I can play them.

Nope not an anime. ZUN has said he does not want to commercialize the series. As it will take the fans individual view of the characters with cannon personalities. If a Touhou video is made it has to be fan-made. However as I said the series has been made into spin-offs of many popular games.

Ever seen a soccer match with Touhou characters? Watch how the Yakumo family plays when they're on the same team!

Here is the second fighting game th 10.5 Scarlet Weather Rhapsody on what I assume is either hard or lunatic. The player is the human time wielder knife Scarlet Devil Mansion head maid Sakuya Izayoi and the foe is her vampire master and Mansion owner Remilia Scarlet with a skin to look like her younger sister Flandre Scarlet.

Yep that is the side I was hoping to keep under the radar for a bit. Well some jokes is that common sense in Gensokyo was null and void. Fun fact with th10.5: when your life in heaven is boring. Screw up the weather and destroy a shrine! Not even kidding with that.

Okay I'm going to come up with a few rules to keep this stable. Sorry Grin but you reminded of the side that will stay out or appear in light forms. This forum has standards and so will this thread. Jokes okay, some mature comedy okay but keep it calm. Perverted things: only because the character Aya makes it funny but limit it. S3xual videos that go way too far: NO

As such No innocent key and videos that show anything leading to s3x/illegal s3x is Not allowed! A nosebleed from Sakuya seeing Remilia is fine as long as it does not cross into s3x!

This going where mini shiki is.
