    rant post ahead

Why do overhyped 9/10 rated AAA must-have games that "bring X to a whole new level of Y" sell more than more original ideas like in eastern games(in general), indie games, or simply games with great gameplay while they offer no new content from the previous games, shallow storylines, many useless features, less content, more paid DLC, and unchallenging gameplay?

And why do sequels always sell more than previous episodes, even though most of them seem to get worse over time?

This is related to DkS because it is (still) not on the wrong side of the barrier

for one, flashy advertising. people are attracted to bright lights like bugs to a zapper.

as for the sequel i think its because people may find something about the game that was really good (maybe on point controlls, or a good story or something) and hope the developer kept that and improved on everything that sucked in the first game (which they claim to do in all that flashy advertising)

    Marketing.

Also, gaming journalism is a corrupt cesspool of kickbacks and quid pro quos.

yea corrupted journalism is a big issue. talk to any gaming magazine about Diablo III or the new Sim City, then talk to people who are out there actually playing (or not playing depending on when you ask them) the game

Yep advertising and putting it in your face. People are very succeptible to it. It was the one thing i loved about demons, its success was down to pure word of mouth.

sometimes you just have to wonder why they keep at it. how many years in a row has a garbage A$$ DBZ game or WWE game came out, and they just keep throwing some spit shine at it and cranking another one out every year.

same thing with sports games. though im not a big sports games fan i do enjoy some basketball every now and then and i believe if they took a year or two off they they could actually put something worth while in the games, instead of just repackaging them.

Sports games are the worst. At least COD tries, somewhat. Sports games are have such trivial differences, and yet games like FIFA are some of the most popular. Well it's just like tv. Amid all the good undiscovered shows there's a cubic ton of complete ********.
I wouldn't mind of DS got more popular; however, as long as FROM never forgets their roots, I have no problem.

Well with fifa you'll always have tranfers and kit changes so teams will always be changing, what gets me is they pretty much ripped off PES. It's the tiger woods series that gets me.

Sports games are different in that there are always new players/players changing teams. If you didn't update you'd be playing in the past and that's just dumb.

I suppose they could do it with patches, but they don't seem keen to try it that way.

pretty much this, why does COD always get a 5 out of 5 every time and yet it's the same game all over again? weird.

I just watched OZ... and when I got home I watched an add movie that declare it was the best movie of all time.

I like looked at that add and was like "...really? I wish I hadn't seen it then. False advertising for views isn't cool :suspect:

It's well worth watching and it's a very well put together story. It follows the book to the dot, and doesn't even have to cut out all that many events.

actually if i were to plug in say something from 2009, considering the servers were still active, the first thing it would do is update all my rosters to current, so all the sports game are really doing is puting in a mini game and shining up the package.

The more widely known a game is, the less likely I am to get into it. This caused me to miss out on a few great games, but overall has saved me a lot of hassle.

Things are changing these days though, Indie Games are getting a lot more attention than they used to (And normally it's very well deserved attention).

I really do wish sequels were judged more harshly though... A Sequel should by all rights, do every single thing better than the original. It's why I don't like it when games like COD make an entirely new game using stuff that they could've added as DLC to their previous game...

you have to watch out for those squid pros, they'll suck your face off if you let them.

but really a sequel on a successful franchise (movie game or otherwise) shouldn't get an automatic pass just because the original was good.

why do the massive piles of mediocrity that get crapped out year after year do so well? it's most likely because they pander to the lowest common denominator. it's where the money is.

I went to this guy's house and saw that he had an X360 with a pile of games. So I was excited to try something new, but here's what he had: every FIFA since 2006, every Madden NFL since 2006, and Rock Band.

To each his own I guess, but I can't see myself drop $500 on what is basically 8 copies of the same game. It's like if Dark Souls II was also set in Lordran, had all the same NPCs, same areas, same bosses, same character classes, but a few different pieces of equipment. And they did that all the way up to Dark Souls VIII.

I dunno, some people just like some games. COD is often rather different in each iteration, and it is a good game - it's popular purely because it draws in a variety of gamers, and there are plenty of different ways to enjoy it the same way there's plenty of different ways to enjoy Dark Souls.

Fifa I'll never understand, but whatever. That, and Hack and Slashers. They just feel all very samey.

Don't let popularity cloud the judgement of whether a game is good or not. Though be wary of reviews - Nintendo magazines are really bad at glossing over flaws in Nintendo games, and the less said about THAT PC Gamer review of Dragon Age 2 the better. DA2 was actually good if you stuck with it, but like with Sim City, the reviewer didn't seem to want to touch on the negative aspects that put people off very early on (awful graphics, reused dungeons and less entertaining characters).

    Yeah, it's just a $60 update.

Reviews don't depend on the company, they depend on the reviewer. This a--hole named Mitch Dyer from IGN likes to rate a lot of great and original games and give them 5s and 3s. He gave Lollipop Chainsaw a 5 and it's honestly one of the most original games in recent years, not to mention some great dialogue. He also goes out of his way to give negative reviews to games with cult followings and such *end hate digression*
I wish that reviewers from major gaming sites could only review games in the genres they're interested in. It makes sense that someone who likes 1st person shooters would think that fantasy puzzle games are stupid.

Hmmm, i'm not sure I can entirely agree with some of the criticism directed towards sports games. Personally, I've only really played Fifa properly so I can't comment on any of the others. For a while it was just updated teams and more content whilst the mechanics of the game remained the same. Fifa 13, however, is vastly different to Fifa 12 and the other previous titles. Historically you would press the pass button and the ball would go to a team mate who would carry on running with it as if he'd had it the entire time. Now there is a 'first touch' element added to the game, generally the better the player the better his first touch is. The defensive system has been completely re-written too, you can't just hold down 2 buttons and let the CPU tackle for you anymore, you actually have to employ some tactics to win the ball back. There are lots more changes like this that make this game completely different to its predessors, it could easily have a different title and be sold as a stand alone game. I won't go on about it anymore though, lol.

COD is a cash cow, but it is quite fun so I understand why people keep going back to it. Skyrim is pretty much Oblivion with dual weilding and Dragons, the Dragons sold it for me so yeah, I like it. Resident Evil, loved 1 and 2, the rest get gradually worse in my opinion. Halo, I love Halo, Reach made me play Halo less and less for 2 reasons; they removed the ranking system and they removed the BR. Final Fantasy, still enjoying the games that are coming out but I prefer the turn-based versions. Oh, and FFVII is the best.

Actually, I think the 2nd ones are always better then the first ones. At least that's true for the games I've played. Although the 3rd ones and up might be worse, but the 2nd ones are the best.

It's almost like people. The #2 man is always the best because he works the hardest.
