What happened to the Burg
I haven't played Dark Souls in about 3 months, and when I came back, the first thing I did was delete my files and start over. I made a SL 120 and decided to go to my favorite PvP spot, the Burg. One of the VERY first thing I noticed is the lack of "bowing". People either 'Proper Bow', or don't do any gestures at all. Now, when I used to see a proper bow, I thought it would be a proper fight. No crits except for parrying, no running away, no healing. This was pretty true for the most part before I stopped playing. Now when I see it, all I think is how I'm going to kill this guy before he can backstab me with his precious hornet ring + greatsword. One thing I also noticed is the constant taunts after a fight. Someone once backstabbed me 7 times in a single fight, then did "Well! What is it?" like he was so amazing with his hornet ring. The next time he invaded, I broke my own rule of never backstabbing, and I felt pretty good as I was pointing down at his dying corpse. But what happened to it? Why is the Burg the new kiln? Is there ANY safe place anymore?

They should make an achievement/trophy in DS2 that's called "Welcome to Dark Souls", you'll get it on your 10th death.KrazykevS10 wrote:I know, you were supposed to imagine a giant billboard above the Firelink Shrine.

This. Is brilliant.
On topic though, it's pretty much a rare occasion to get a fair fight nowadays at the burg. Every 3 fights you face a moron who ganks you with a friend or bow stab you. Once 3 guys hid in the room with the wooden shield and gave me a brazzers.

Re: What happened to the Burg
Two Vita games already have that Trophy. In Escape Plan and Dokuro there's a trophy that unlocks when you die enough. In Dokuro it's called "friends with death" and is unlocked after 100 deaths which was pretty easy for me sadly.
On topic, it seems like most of the game has become this. I've seen a lot less Forest Darkmoons lately if that's any consolation.

Re: What happened to the Burg
I'll be honest, I've never found a sl120 duel in the Burg. Something similar happened to me in the Kiln. It used to be ok for me, then it became terrible. I proceeded to go Hornet Ring + buffs and parry those sad buggers with my +15 Bandit's Knife. People called me cheap for parrying, but apart from the fact I could hardly parry real people back then, and 1900 damage killed them instantly conflicted with one another.

Isn't it cool how cheap people are spreading like the abyss and corrupting everything?

Re: What happened to the Burg
First post! I started playing Dark Souls a few weeks ago, and I've only had one person ever bow. That person didn't even fight me. Instead, they dropped a bunch of upgrade materials and jumped off the edge giving me about 118000 souls.
I'm only now hearing about this whole 'bow before you fight' thing, but is it that big of a deal? What about at lower levels? I suppose it is different if you're actually looking for duels or something, but I do whatever I can to dispatch someone who invades my game, though I've never back-stabbed someone. Is that frowned upon here?

Re: What happened to the Burg
The opinion on backstabs isn't in general, often, the way people think of them is how you use backstabs. If you're fighting someone much more powerful than you, or they are turtling, but slow, go for a backstab. But constantly trying for them is seen as bad, and called 'bs fishing', in case you didn't know.

Re: What happened to the Burg
Backstabs have never been frowned upon in the burg if used in moderation. I am happy to backstab someone who misses by loads with a running attack or who flips around constantly.
The burg is a nightmare though, a lot of people just use buffed weapons and R1 spam or fish with their hornet rings.

Re: What happened to the Burg
i only bow if i'm summoning or have been summoned for a duel (dragon eye, red soapstone etc). if you bow during a random invasion, i won't backstab or dark bead you into oblivion but i will throw a poison dagger at you every time.

Re: What happened to the Burg
For the most part, I NEVER backstab in my SL 120 burg fights. The ONLY time I EVER do it is if they do it to me and I somehow survive. But that's not usually the case. People will normally backstab me when they are almost dead, then they STILL do a taunt, like they're so good they can do a Pivot BS while I'm recovering. It surprises most people when I don't backstab, it's the only reason I get the win, because that's what they EXPECT, is a backstab.

Re: What happened to the Burg
Funny, I usually bow just because I'm in the Burg and it is an unofficial PVP arena. If I give you one of these I mean it and honor will follow. In my mind one of these is only half of this . Most the time I'm in the Burg all I find is honor but last night was crazy and someone actually did try a bow stab on me but I rolled out of it by pure dumb desperate luck. I didn't even dignify him with a single BS. I just rolled around and chipped away at him with dual falchions(fire, occult) until he died. All that being said there has been a lot of ganker activity in the Burg. I really need to make a point of keeping a stronger presence in the Forest now that someone brought it up.

I bow before every fight (if I can)- even to gankers in the forest... I don't think I've ever used the proper bow though- do most people distinguish between the two gestures?

I only proper bow with my girl toons to see their panties (sad I know )
I see nothing wrong with Backstabbing in the burg though. It is part of the game, I just wish I saw parries just as often.
I hope in Dark Souls 2 they make the connection so godlike that parrying works like pve. I can only dream though.

Re: What happened to the Burg
I think part of it is because the honor system is different for people now in the Burg. I remember it was one of the first places I ever went to for PVP and I always bowed and would have a good time with "honorable duels".
I can kind of pinpoint when it started down the path of the Kiln. I think it was a month after I first started PVP that one day in the Burg there were at least 15 different gank squads in the area, some of them I recognized from the forest too. Ever since then (at least for me) PVP has degraded there.

Re: What happened to the Burg
Everything changed with what I always believed was an mass influx of players who decided to throw out any honor system already established and brought an era of jerks, of course not all were bad. Or in a simply way to explain: the forest took over a lot of places, the Burg among them. God I remembered at one point the xbox got unbearable with prick PvPers where just about everything hated was used and honor duels were a thing of the past. The Burg was just a fraction as other places transformed like that. I think it dropped dramatically after the last patch and dlc came out. Though you still will get things like ganks and other messed up fights in the Burg there are still some who will fight with some sense of honor.

I never noticed you could see my characters panties when she bowed.
I'm either wearing the wrong armors or I'm not perverted enough to notice.

Re: What happened to the Burg
I try to maintain honor in combat whenever I can. I always bow when possible, even running away first so that I can do so to indicate that I want an honorable fight. That being said: the one good thing about a smaller PC group is that gankers are much less common, so perhaps I don't feel the brunt of the gank squads.
