If your friend doesnt have a dragon scale he cannot see the signs, he also has to be human.

The only thing I can suggest is try and do a co-op area together, then when you know you are in the same server, go to another area where he hasnt beaten the boss and drop your dragon sign.
EDIT: or just black crystal out once he as summoned you as a white phantom and then drop your dragon sign in the same area.
