Pvp is fun, I enjoy it.. but it seems so pointless sometimes.
I get invaded, the dude skips all over my screen (lag, not the forest ring) and 1 hit backstabs me.
    This **** happens repeatedly.

How do I counter this nonsense?
    Thanks. cheers

get a better connection if he's skipping all over the screen silly

in terms of backstabs, try not to leave yourself open by blindly swinging, and retreat if he looks to be trying to go round your back

other than that just practice happy

btw welcome to our forums big grin Bow

    Hi and welcome,

Here is a previous thread about that:

    https://soulswiki.forumotion.com/t1693-what-s-your-strategy-for-avoiding-backstabs?highlight=backstabs

Also in youtube there are videos of how to backstab and counter, best way to counter is to actually learn to backstab also.

Do read the thread since there is a bunch of info there...

Unfortunately this is part of the game. The networking machanics are to be desired and I wish the game creators would have done a better job at creating a better system. To the person that recommended the guy get a better network connection you have no clue how lag transpires. Case in point.

Two days ago I was helping a guy in the forest when some invader appears. We hear the sound of him arriving but his image skips in and out of the screen. Now mind you up to that point there were no other issues with previous invaders and lag. But this one the lag was just horrible. He proceeds to back stab me then disappear off my screen again. He does the same to the summoner. Finally but just blind chance because he was not even close to me I land a backstab on him even though he was 10 feet aways from me. So me being very well adept and chain backstabs with my Artorias I wait behind him. Once the animation ends I strike again but all of a sudden he is gone from my screen and backstabbing the summoner. This fight just turned into a huge joke due to the lag on his part. The summoner dies and we reconnect again afterwards fighting invaders without any issue.

Then our laggy invader comes back but this time as I catch him again in a backstab while he is literally yards away from me in my screen he is booted from the summoners world because of his network connection. We continue our game play without any lag coming from other invaders what so ever. So this is an individual issue with a persons connection though it is not always the summoners but the invaders connection that can be at fault as well. "From" or whoever decided to choose this peer to peer connection for co op purposes made a very bad decision. They really didn't test this type of connection very well at all and the impact it would have on the game play. That to me is just sad but must be accepted when playing this game. But it does leave the game hackable to those that are network saavy and able to take advantage of this flaw in the game. Just my two cents on this issue.

I think the fight became a total joke when you started to chain BS him. How would that be fun for anyone, lag or no lag? He was probably invading/hosting from Japan. They have pretty bad connections with people playing in N America. Can't speak for other countries, because I don't play from there. Also lag and peer to peer has absolutely nothing to do with hacking.

this guy does a series of helpful videos aswell.

also note that if the other player takes damage whilst trying to bs you, you take no damage from the bs, so well timed attacks will shut down bsers hard.

    To Dom:
If you would have read the message I stated I could not land a chain back stab because of the invaders lag. He was the only invader that had this type of drastic lag. The ones we found before and after did not have this lag issue at all.

And to those that say I'm being too serious. All I am doing is answering the guys question. Lag is something that is in this game to stay. As of yet there is no way to over come this issue at all. Even for the most experianced fighters in this game. It does not matter how good you are when you encounter this problem it really puts you at a disadvantage. The only thing to do is keep fighting and deal with it.

This is not exclusive to japanese fighters. I have played well over 2000 hours of Dark Souls and have seen it all. I encounter this with Euro fighters as well as Japanese and here in America as well. How do I know this? By sending an email to the invaders and asking them their point of origin. Some because of their connections, with or without their knowledge of knowing its happening, have an advantage against other players. I have this guy on my friends list who is from Europe. It never fails that when I help him or encounter him as an invader his world has really bad lag. And other friends of mine who have fought or helped him have told me the same thing as well. It only occurs with him. Whether its his internet connection or what who knows. But like I said before it is something that happens in this games mechanics at times and we as players have grown used to it. Just like the issue when you are helping a summoner and all of a sudden they die by some invisible invader that you could not see or attack. It is no different then that. Most of the time the people causing it do not realize this is occurring so it is unintentional, and more then likely out of their hands anyways because there are so many factors involved on what could be the cause of it. Again just my opinion from a veteran player. I don't expect anyone else to agree with me on this. Just answering the guys question the same way I would hope someone would answer mine. Concise and to the point without making a joke out of it. Thats the point of this community. To help others so that they can enjoy this game as much as we do. Again I don't expect everyone to agree with me so please lets not turn this into a flaming contest. Thank you

I honestly don't see where lorenzo went overboard? Who's post did he take too seriously? Because if the OP doesnt have a problem with the post I don't see what the issue is.

From what I understood he basically said "lag happens, you deal with it." Which is pretty true, he didnt appear to be slandering anyone from my persepctive.

Anyway, no reason to derail the topic over it. For every laggy match I have had I got about 20 good ones. And that was when I lived in the most northern part of canada with a crap connection. I still get a few wonky fights here and there but really all you can do is laugh them off, nothing to be done there.

I like to use force attacks to avoid backstabs like everyone else has said, or just circle the opposite direction they are trying to.. sometimes that works. You can practice in the forest covenant since almost everyone there is fishing, and you don't lose anything for dying. I joined hoping to work on my online parries but no one will take a swing at me.

Thank you Yukon. You are absolutely right, keeping your opponent in front of you and circling does help with the lag fighters. They may have the advantage because of the lag but if you use movement and environment against them you can flip the script on them. Try to lure them into areas that will keep them from trying to circle for your back. The bridge in the forest comes to mind. The lag will make it a tough fight but with experiance and knowledge of the environment around you can change things to your favor. Hope that helps.

One other thing to bear in mind: don't beat yourself up if you keep getting backstabbed. A lot of folks will say it's your fault if you keep getting backstabbed, but I don't think that's always or even usually true. There are so many crazy stories and vids out there of "impossible" backstabs that it is pretty clear a lot of the problem lies with a combination of broken gameplay dynamic, and random fits of lag. You can minimize some of it by practice, but when you get BS'd just get up, dust yourself off (often in a new life) and continue on your way. I've started to think of them as natural disasters, like floods. Sometimes they just happen despite the best planning, don't let it ruin your enjoyment of the game.

They happen because of my best planning.......lock bsing is so easy people forget to defend against it. any non-forward movement will stuff it. so back off and use a crossbow or feint or in, swing, out a few times then catch the charge with a bs. the trick to stopping it is knowing how its done. as with any technique. thats why i posted the bs vid.

I guess my point is that do what you can, but don't expect miracles. Last night I was backstabbed by someone who wasn't even in the room. I rolled through a doorway, turned around to face it while backing up, and then seized up and fell over. Nobody else was even visible. It looked like a heart attack or getting unplugged from the Matrix.

One thing that will help is to learn how to BS. Once you learn to do the various BS, you'll be able to know them in detail, predict the pivot ones and avoid the roll ones. You'll see them coming, learn which of your moves will make you open for them, how to adjust your moves accordingly, and how to bait your opponent into attempting a BS and punish them for it.

If you want help learning them, let me know, we can practice. Once you learn them, then we can practice avoidance.
