    PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

    MAIN RULE 1)

    You can guess.
2 per post, or 2 per hour...screw it...
...I now make it 3. :affraid:

    MAIN RULE 2)

There are 4 categories: ITEMS / PEOPLE / WEAPONS / MISC
    please see description below...

    MAIN RULE 3)

Do not submit the riddle until someone calls it.
You can call it, but you MUST know how.

    MAIN RULE 4)

    Sun Have fun. Sun

Now for all the important things you need to know...oooooor you can scroll down to the next post
and just have fun with the riddles and answers if you want!

    big grin
    Spoiler:

    0) The "Riddle Ref" is the person in control of editing the thread. They reserve the right to ask for community opinons regarding rules and if rules have been followed. They also reserve the right to make decisions based solely at their discretion. This includes changing rules. They are also responsible for updating the original post to reflect the riddles, answers given, and conclusions of riddles. They can also resolve tie-breaker decisions, while at the same time submitting their own vote.

    1) Riddles will have a shelf life of 72 hours and can have a maximum of 20 guess submissions.

1a) In the event a riddle posted has not been answered correctly and the 72 hours have lapsed, the author will give the answer and explanation verifying the riddle as unanswered, and the floor will be open on a "first come first serve basis". In the case 2 riddles are posted simultaneously, the riddle with the earliest time stamp will be valid, and the other riddle will be disregarded.

1b) In the event that a riddle has reached the maximum number of guesses within any time frame, the author and participants will continue as in rule 1a.(duplicate answers do not count towards the maximum number of 20)

1c) In the event that either the 72 hour time frame has lapsed, or the 20 guess limitation has been reached, and the author is unable to verify a correct or incorrect answer, the riddle will be concluded and the floor will be open with one stipulation:

-If a "guesser" has actually answered the riddle correctly without verification from the author before said riddle has been declared concluded and a new riddle has already been started, a new sub-thread will be created titled, "Dark Souls Living Riddles With Rules #1.1" for the sole purpose of giving a "guesser" the opportunity to take advantage of correctly guessing a riddle's answer. The exact same rules will apply in the aforementioned sub-thread. The riddles in this sub-thread will count towards the goal of 10 riddles for the creation the the "riddle-off" poll.

    2) A riddle submitted must contain a category. They are as follows:

    -Items:
This includes all the items in the game, as well as the keys. ie green blossom, peculiar doll, bequethed lord soul, weapon smith box, etc.

    -People:
Any person directly in game, or hinted to in lore. This would also include enemies, bosses, optional bosses, etc.

    -Weapons:
This includes weapons, armor, shields, ammunition, spells, pyros, miracles, rings, and casting tools.

    -Misc:
This includes anyhting outside of the other categories.

2a) Guesses outside the riddle author's stated category will be determined valid by either the "Riddle Ref" or the author of the riddle. If there is a disagreement whether the submitted answer falls into the realm of "qualified answers", then the Riddle Ref will have the deciding vote.

    *Creator's Reasoning:
Riddle authors are not required to give any clues. The rules in place allow someone who has correctly answered a riddle, the ability to simply post their riddle and walk away. This is apart of the "turn-key" or "self-maintaining" idea designed to keep the flow of the thread going and allow minimum maintenance. Using Dark Souls as a stand alone category is simply creating too large of a category. There are only 4 categories and one of them being misc. It creates a disadvantage to the author while simultaneaously putting all riddles on a level playing field when considering the competition poll. It is a default clue for all riddles, and is something I and others deem necessary.

    3) Any forum member may call a riddle concluded and either post their riddle or call the floor open. Bearing in mind the rules and stipulations required to do so.

    4) Whoever correctly solves the riddle will have a 24 hour window to submit their riddle. If they are unable to submit a new riddle in time, or choose to forgo the right to submit, the next riddle may be submitted on a "first come, first serve" basis. A new riddle may not be submitted until these criteria are met. There are NO RAINCHECKS. You shall either submit the riddle in 24 hours, or forgo your right to submit entirely.

    5) The riddle, explanation, verified wrong answers, and the correct answer will all be documented in post numbers two and three. This is to clear up any confusion, and also to prevent 40-50 pages of nonsense for the "guessers" to sift through. This should allow for easy access and more enjoyment when participating in a riddle. Answers and explanations will be hidden in spoilers.

    6) After 10 riddles are submitted and concluded a poll will be created to decide who had the best riddle. After 30 riddles, or the conclusion of "Dark Souls Riddles With Rules #3", there will be a "riddle-off" between the poll winners to determine who is the true riddle king or queen .

    7) You are allowed to submit a maximum of 3 guesses per post and/or 3 guesses per hour. This will give other people a chance to submit their guesses, and give the riddle a chance to last the full 72 hours.

8\ If you are unable or unwilling to follow the rules of guessing and posting riddles, then please do not participate. The Riddle Ref will be editing the op probably at least once a day, and will try to make sure it is accurate and enjoyable. Please do not create extra unecessary work for the Riddle Ref.

    9) If the author decides to send the Riddle Ref a private message with the answer and riddle explanation, then the Riddle Ref will also help verify correct answers on their behalf. However, the Riddle Ref will obviously void themselves from participating in said riddle. The Riddle Ref will also under no circumstances reveal any hints about the riddle. They will simply judge and their comments will be only "you win" or "not correct".

    10) The "riddle off" poll will be created exactly 24 hours after the conclusion of the 10th riddle. A total of 11, 12, or even 13 riddles may be included in the "riddle off" if it is necessary considering the ability to create a "sub-thread" for extenuating circumstances.

    11) In the event the Riddle Ref is unable to monitor and update the thread, another forum member may replicate the thread as their own for the sake of communication between the authors and guessers. Situations that warrant the commandeering of a thread:

-The Riddle Ref has not edited or made any updates to the thread for 96 hours.

-The Riddle Ref requests another forum member to take over their responsibilities.

-A total of 3 riddles become submitted and concluded without any participation of the riddle ref. That would put the responsibility in the hands of the participants, and defeats the purpose of having a Riddle Ref, posting information in the op, and creates an enormous amount of information for the readers to sift through, thereby creating confusion and a lack of structure.

***The only exception would be when there is absolutely no activity in the thread from any forum member. However, once there is any activity ie guesses, riddle submissions, etc...the 96 hour time frame applies.

    12) You may submit up to 3 riddles per thread, and have 3 riddles entered into the "riddle off" poll.

    13) The winner of a Riddle Off Poll will be deemed the current "Riddle Master" and gain the following privileges....

13a) Once someone has been deemed "The Riddle Master" by the voters in the "Riddle Off Poll", they are given the option to become "Riddle Ref" for the next "Dark Souls Riddles With Rules" thread.

13b) On top of this, they are also allowed to enter the next "Riddle Off Poll" without formally making a submission in the relevant thread. They will be considered participant #11 so to speak. However, they MUST create a new riddle and not use the old riddle that helped them gain their title.

13c) So in essence, a Riddle Master will be able to defend their title in the next riddle off, while fullfilling their duties as a Riddle Ref (if they decided to be). If they lose the next riddle off, they will not be able to enter the next riddle off without being formally enter as before.

***While giving a clue like a category may seem like it would make a riddle too easy to solve, I think it will allow people to avoid answers such as: "What is Solaire's shoe size?" "Are the Asylum Demon and the Firesage Demon cousins?"..etcetcetc.

***If there are loopholes and/or additional rules that should be implemented, please let me know and I will edit them into the rules. Please try to understand the "turn-key" or "self maintaining" mentality before suggesting rule changes.
    Thank you.

    DISCLAIMER

IV_Mark_VI had mentioned a similar idea before. I haven't heard from him regarding his progress. However, I'd like to acknowledge that although this idea varies from his original idea, this thread is influenced by him along with my own imagination. If I am able to speak with Mark, and he wants to participate, then I shall share the responsibility with him, and make sure that he recieves equal credit for the idea of "clearing up the madness".

This was hinting at the weapon being a rapier/thrusting weapon, and yes in the description it also mentions 'piercng knights armout'!

    RIDDLE #4 RESOLVED

    A flicker, a flare
    You're almost there
when down comes a tower of steel
and with great rewards comes greater a peril
when this freight of a beast slays you.

Although it is quick it also is slow
    Sought after by all
    Yet attained by but one
We screech and we claw and in time it will fall
from the hands of the one whom swings it.

    Author: Rynn

    CATEGORY: weapon

    ANSWERS GIVEN: Halbred / Lifehunt Scythe / Demon's Greathammer / Butcher's Knife / Artorias Sword-Artorias Sword Cursed / Chaos Blade / Grant / Greatsword / Gargoyles Halbred / Golem's Axe / Stone Greatshield / Demon's Great Machete / Velka's Rapier / Priscilla's Dagger / Darksword / Greatlord Greatsword / scimitar / Smough's Hammer / Avelyn / titanite Catch Pole(#20)
*Riddle concludes at 11:05am EST on 03/18/2013

    CORRECT ANSWER:

    Spoiler:
    Greataxe
Any deriviation that indicated "Berakand Knight's Great Mace"

The great mace is the accurate answer, however the enemy this riddle was created for can drop a Greataxe upon being defeated, and as such the Greataxe would have been accepted as an answer.
(No correct answer given)*Treated as first come first serve

    EXPLANATION:

    Spoiler:
    A flicker, a flare
Behind the knight that holds this mace is a firekeeper soul, the unclaimed item has the particle effect of a flickering flare.
    You're almost there
By the time you first see the knight you are within 5 feet of the keepers soul
when down comes a tower of steel
The knight to any player looks like a tower of black steel, it looks large and unyielding, and you're unsure how to fight it.
and with great rewards comes greater a peril
The great reward is the firekeeper soul, the greater peril is the Knight, whom in a single swing does more damage then an estus flask +1 (your reward) can heal.
when this freight of a beast slays you
A play on words, the enemy you are fighting is both practically a freight train, and it is a frightful encounter your very first time.

This part of the riddle is both a clue and a mis-direction, it describes the scene of where you are, which if properly interpreted guides you to the correct weapon, but it also misguides you into believing the treasure spoken of is the weapon, when in fact the treasure, a firekeepers soul, is mundane and irrelevant as far as finding the answer is considered.
Although it is quick it also is slow
The knights swing this mace in a particularily interesting fashion: They have a very slow wind up, and then a very lightning fast swing. The same is actually true for the Greataxe.
    Sought after by all
    Yet attained by but one
One of the things Dark Souls advertises is that the player can attain any weapon in the game. This is true, except for two weapons: The Four Kings Sword (which I'd considered making a riddle for) and the Great Mace. There is also only one Knight in the entire game outfitted with this weapon.
We screech and we claw and in time it will fall
from the hands of the one whom swings it.
This line simply describes your battle with it's lone, and only owner. At the end of the battle, it often drops the weapon on the ground during it's death animation: where sadly it will vanish, never to grace the world of Dark Souls again.

    RIDDLE #5 RESOLVED

    Fiery flares drop everywhere
Like rounded pools filled with despair
Yet shields worn by ashen knights
    receive only a short reprieve

Gathers Dust in an old tomb
    Sought for treasures never took
    twixt between it's always there
and with it's flare it spreads despair

Weakened force we crash we fall
In crystals, chaos, or faithful Gall
we look upon the flare once more
and in a flash it then will fall.

    Author: Rynn

    CATEGORY: people

ANSWERS GIVEN: ceaseless discharge /everlasting dragon / "Daughter of Chaos" in Lost Izalith(and/or Quelana) / Quelaag / Patches / Burrowing Rockworm / BoC / Gwyn / Crest Fallen Merchant / Pinwheel / a hollow / Chaos bugs / Taurus Demon / Black Knight / Centipede Demon / Firesage / Nito
Additional hint: Category is dead giveaway.
Additional Hint: From a previous thread.
*Riddle concludes at 1:15pm EST on 03/19/2013

    ANSWER:

    Spoiler:
    Stray Demon (AnCapaillMor)*Deferred riddle

    EXPLANATION:

    Spoiler:
    Fiery flares drop everywhere
    >The stray demon throws out his explosion attacks frequently
Like rounded pools filled with despair
    >Embelished description of the attack
Yet shields worn by ashen knights
    receive only a short reprieve
    >Black Knight Shield, while possessing very high fire defense, has only 25% magic defense, and despite appearances the explosion causes magic damage, so a shield of an ashen knight only delays death for a very short time.

Gathers Dust in an old tomb
    >It's battlefield is a tomb
    Sought for treasures never took
    >While most players grab the slab, far fewer take the rusted iron ring.
    twixt between it's always there
    >The demon can be seen within 4 seconds of the game starting.
and with it's flare it spreads despair
    >Repeating a previous point.

Weakened force we crash we fall
In crystals, chaos, or faithful Gall
    >Describing what our character may be like
we look upon the flare once more
and in a flash it then will fall.
    >Defeating the Stray Demon.

    RIDDLE #6 RESOLVED

From darkest pits to highest peaks
A lifeless thing, its fate so bleak
The light is gone, it can't repeat
    Fading away, the task complete.

    Author: Zephryl

    CATERGORY: misc.

ANSWERS GIVEN: "a spirit" (Someone being summoned into your world) / black knights / Mass of Souls / Golden Fog Doors or placing Lord Vessel / Fading flame of the age of fire / crystal lizard / ringing the 2 bells / the bonfires / prism stones / Buffing a weapon with DMB / treasures on a body / using estus / vagrant spawning / the sun
*Riddle concludes at 7:17pm EST on 03/19/2013

    ANSWER:

    Spoiler:
Trading Skull Lantern for Fog Ring

I would've accepted "Taking the Necromancer Skull to Snuggly" or variants like that.
(Time elapsed)*treated as first come first serve

    EXPLANATION:

    Spoiler:

From darkest pits to highest peaks

You get the lantern from the floor of the Tomb of Giants, or from the Catacombs with a bit of luck from a drop, and to make the trade have to take it to the Asylum, which is on top of a mountain that's surrounded by other mountains.

A lifeless thing, its fate so bleak

The skull is a skull, in this case it's literally a "Lifeless thing". It's one of the few items in the game that I don't think anybody uses in combat, and most people probably don't even use it to light the TotG either (It's the worst option IMO). It's fate is bleak because the best use for it is to throw it away.

The light is gone, it can't repeat

The "Light" refers to both the light the lantern makes, as well as the light of the Item Orb, suggesting that you can't "Undo" the trade. The second part is just referencing that each trade is once per playthrough.

    Fading away, the task complete.

Fading away is another reference to the item orbs, as well as referencing the actual physical effect of the Fog Ring you receive. The final part is just saying that the trade's been completed once you pick up the Ring.

    RIDDLE #7 RESOLVED

An oak tree's heart is where I'm your finest treasure
A painted trap the finest pleasure
An eye could bring you straight into me
An eye could bring "friends" straight through me
Fond memories are made through me
Fond injuries are forged with me
Prisons are found only with me
Light Gwyn's fire and you'll come straight to me
Run out of estus, and you may meet me
Touching my bones could take you to me
Some magicians, claim they know me
Some cats promise to take you to me
I promise friend, we'll often meet
but bleak is that fate, because you'll never stay with me.

    Author: Rynn

    CATERGORY: misc.

ANSWERS GIVEN: Death's Door / Loading Screen / Various/different worlds of Lordan in time / death / bonfires / nito / traveling through the abyss
*Riddle concludes at 8:22pm EST on 03/23/2013

    ANSWER:

    Spoiler:
    Traveling/Warping (AnCapaillMor) *Deferred riddle

    EXPLANATION:

    Spoiler:
An oak tree's heart is where I'm your finest treasure

The Great Hollow is easiest left by warping.

A painted trap the finest pleasure

The painted world of ariamis is only reached throuh a warp.

An eye could bring you straight into me

The red eye orb, the blue eye orb

An eye could bring "friends" straight through me

The Eyes of death, friends is written in quotations because the people sent aren't really friendly.

Fond memories are made through me

One memorizes the locations they can warp too if they play the game too much, and most people consider Dark Souls a fond memory.

Fond injuries are forged with me

A reference to both dueling and to dying: both are experiences many people find, while frustrating, fun.

Prisons are found only with me

Without cheating, the only way to reach the dukes prison is a warp.

Light Gwyn's fire and you'll come straight to me

Beating the game warps you to the beginning.

Run out of estus, and you may meet me

You only may meet a teleportation: You could easily get back to the bonfire without dying.

Touching my bones could take you to me

A homeward bone takes you through a warp. But nothing stops you from using one even if you're right next to the bonfire.

Some magicians, claim they know me

    Homeward: It's a miracle.

Some cats promise to take you to me

Alvina teleports you to the forest to fight.

I promise friend, we'll often meet

Teleportation happens often in Dark Souls

but bleak is that fate, because you'll never stay with me

    Teleportation is short lived.

    RIDDLE #8 RESOLVED

    I stand tall
    Though I fly
    I also fall
    Hear my cry
    I'll spoil your fun
    Prepare to die
    Or else run!

    Author: Hugh_G_Johnson

    CATEGORY: people

ANSWERS GIVEN: bridge drake / Gargoyles
*Riddle concludes at 3:32pm EST on 03/23/2013

    ANSWER:

    Spoiler:
    Harpies (Teh_hapy_octopus)

    EXPLANATION:

    Spoiler:
    I stand tall
literally and figuratively harpies are tall and perch on the highest points in the painted world.
    Though I fly
    I also fall
For some reason these stupid things can fall to their death even though they fly. The winged demons in Anor Londo have wings, but hop without really flying; much like chickens. It's also a metaphor for their prowess as an enemy, they can be quite tough at times and other times they figuratively and literally fall flat on their face.
    Hear my cry
    I'll spoil your fun
They shreak before they do that jump on your head attack that you have to sit and watch forever, even if death is inevitable... very annoying; not fun...
    Prepare to die
    Or else run!
The aforementioned attack is often fatal, so avoiding it at all costs is advisable. And I fit "prepare to die" into my riddle, yay! cheers  :|

    RIDDLE #9 RESOLVED

I raise my head up in the air
This mock fills you with despair
When I'm done I fade away
But if you kill me you'll shout HOORAY!!!

    Author: Teh_hapy_octopus

    CATEGORY: people

ANSWERS GIVEN: Seathe / Giant Guardians in Anor Londo / Stupid shield blocking guys??? / An Invader / Summoning a Sunbro / AN invader using the "Well what is it" emote / A mimic /
*Riddle concludes at 7:27am EST on 03/24/2013

    ANSWER:

    Spoiler:
    Crystal Lizard (Elifia)

    EXPLANATION:

    Spoiler:
I raise my head up in the air
They raise their head in the air
This mock fills you with despair
When they raise their head I think it's taunting me which makes me sad
When I'm done I fade away
They fade away if you can't get them
But if you kill me you'll shout HOORAY!!!
I don't know about you guys but if I get twinkling titanite and a slab that warrants a celebration

    RIDDLE #10 RESOLVED

    Long have you sought,
    long have you fought,

    ANSWER:

    Spoiler:
    The Sun

    EXPLANATION:
    Spoiler:
The riddle tells the tale of Solaire. It then demands that you tell it what it was that Solaire was looking for.

    Long have you sought,
    (Solaire sought his own sun)
    long have you fought,
(Solaire did a lot of fighting)
    long have you thought,
    your quest was for naught.

(Not sure if it was actually that long, but time in Lordran is distorted, so it can be. It refers to the point where he's starting to give up hope that he'll ever find his own sun)
    But then I was brought,
    by that which you caught.

(He caught the sunlight maggot, put it on his head. The maggot brought him his very own sun)
Now tell me, I am what?

I really love the time line and restrictions on guesses, should make things a bit easier.

    As for my second guess...

    Firekeeper Soul?

No it is not that either, and thank you.

Should it be 2 guesses at a time, 2 guesses a day, or 2 guesses altogether?

I would say 2 guess a post, but I think a cap per member would be a good idea as well, that way you did get a wave of posts, each with 2 answers from the same member

As to what that number should be I would say 2~4 would be a good idea...

I think that giving the category actually does reduce the effectiveness of a riddle. For example, my riddle in the other thread is easily solved if one is given a category, as only 1 thing in the entire game fits it's category, but if I don't give a category, then there is many, many possibilities. I don't much appreciate having control taken away despite having tried to give another course to the thread anyway, especially with the work I'd put both into the riddle and into helping resolve the issue with the other unresolved riddle.

Ya know what...I'll say 2 guesses per post, and 2 guesses per hour. That will give others a chance, and still allow someone to aggressively participate when they are "REALLY into it".

Thanks for the feedback, I'll post into the op.

    Poliwrath wrote:The dingy set?

No it is not. Keep in mind the category is "item".

    Thanks for the guess.

I can appreciate your concern. However, I've given a category with mine, people are still having trouble all the while it retains its effectiveness. The answer makes perfect sense and will be obvious once given.

I'm tired of something that has no rules and goes on forever and ever and ever.

If giving a clue and or/category is detrimental to the riddle, then maybe the riddle is too easy to begin with.

This thread is designed for a wide audience. If someone wants to create a thread that has 60 pages of a personal riddle, then they are free to do so. However, this thread has rules, which I'm sure are extremely welcomed.

The Category of the riddle is Dark Souls however. if I state the category of my riddle is weapons, then the answer becomes almost immediately completely obvious, as barely any weapons fit my riddle, however The Stray Demon, The Asylum demon, Firesage Demon, Bed of Chaos, Gwyndolin, chaos fireball, great fireball, firestorm, etc, they all also fit my riddle and are immediately not longer valid options based on the catagory. The riddle is not "Too easy" it's just suddenly no longer capable of working with the reduction of category size.

The Category of Dark Souls is too broad. I'm tired of this.

I never said your riddle was too easy.

This thread is not here to discuss your riddle.

So whats the answer to mine?

If you want to discuss rules, please pm me. I'd prefer not turn the into a lengthy discussion of what you think is right.

    Thank you.
