So...I think we know where this is going:

What do you think about the way companies are handling DLC, Season Passes, Online Passes and Limited Edition versions of past games? Do you think there actions are being justified? Do you think they will try even bigger things as time passes? Will these practices die down? Do you even like this stuff? Do you think they are even using this correctly?

I like DLC as long as it is an electronic deal, and that's about it.

Watch this guy's stuff on the subject. I really can't sum it up any more briefly than "I agree with most of what he says on the subject of game marketing and pricing models."

EDIT: Probably the most relevant one of his right now: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/jimquisition/6863-Previewed-Preordered-Prescrewed

Day 1 DLC always has me suspicious as to if that DLC was originally going to be apart of the game or not.

I myself don't mind downloading DLC every once and a while but I avoid it in most cases because I just don't care to buy any more for a game that I already have.

I can't stand season passes at all, I think the online passes are justified when you know people are going to play your game for the multiplayer and yet half of those people are going to buy your game used.

I've never cared for a Limited Edition version of games if you want to waste even more money on a game you already bought because it has a few more hours of content, fine. I, personally, won't buy any "Limited Edition" games because I don't want to waste my money and that goes for all games I've bought even Dark Souls.

All of it is a waste IMO. The rule I follow is no DLC unless it is a game developer/publisher that I want to support AND I play a lot of that game. This generation has two games that fall into that category: Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. No other games warranted DLC because once I was done with the game, I didn't really care about it any more. Even in Dark Souls I only played through the DLC twice, so it wasn't like I got a huge amount out of it, but I did want to support the devs regardless.

I abhor games like CoD. The games themselves are basically $60 map packs with a tagged on 6 hour single player campaign that they then charge another $60 through DLC only to have a new game come out and start the cycle over again. I refuse to promote this type of marketing and is one reason why I haven't been playing as many games as of late... many are going to this (admittedly, somewhat successful) strategy.

I'm not against DLC (though I don't preorder) I'm against DLC that is just splitting the game into pieces and demanding I pay $90 for the whole thing. (think mass effect or saints row 3 DLC) When I buy fallout, I know there's going to be DLC. I also know it will be $20 and I also know it will be 4 or 5 hours long, if I'm slow about it and ignore the side quests. In short, I know it will be a full blown expansion. That, I'm Ok with. Novelty hats, I'm not ok with.

I like DLC as long as it feels like a complementary addition to a game. In terms of multiplayer games, I dislike it when it feels like DLC's give one the ability to pay to win, for lack of better words.

As for limited editions, I'm a big fan of those for series I love. I have the big GT5 box(European version), Codex Edition of Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Animus Edition of Assassin's Creed Revelations, Bioshock 2 Rapture Edition, and Borderlands 2 Loot Chest Edition. I love the little trinkets they give. I would've loved to get the Japanese exclusive Resident Evil 6, if only for the insanely expensive Leon S Kennedy jacket.

To me it depends: if a DLC comes out within 2-3 months of a game, I assume that it was intended to be part of the game, and that the devs cut it to make more cash by selling it separately. If the DLC actually adds content, I might buy it, but I tend to stay away from DLC expansions that cost me more than $1 per hour.

I hate online passes. To me simply owning a game should merit the ability to play online.

I hate DLC released within 6 months of a game's release. To me that kinda thing is instant alarm bells telling me it's stuff cut from the original just to try max profits.

I actually like limited editions when stuff like dark souls gives you art books and such. I don't like it when they sell as a "limited edition" on day 1 with DLC when really you should just call it the final product.

These practises are only gonna get worse, since sadly gaming is a business and until we take action that fully rejects such practise (I.e boycotting, which sadly people won't do), the business will simply find more ways to exploit us for cash.

It's not the companies fault for trying to max profits as that's their job, it's our fault for failing to put our feet down.

I'm really ok with any creative approach to packaging and selling content so long as I feel I am deriving value from it. Value varies from person to person and I think the game industry is playing with the business model to see where things best fit. I think over time we will see things settle into an arrangement that is comfy for both seller and consumer. Right now it's the push and pull of growing pains that comes from an industry boom.

I don't have much to say about those others, but Online Passes...

I abso-f*cking-lutely hate online passes. What's the point? Why can't a friend just bring his game over to my place and let me play multiplayer on my account?

I seriously can't see the point in online passes. Only EA seems to be doing it too.
