    Chester's Role in the Past?

Post by Lancelot on Fri Mar 08, 2013 7:43 pm

I haven't found anything on this subject, so I guess I'll ask this here:

Since Chester was brought to the past by Manus, much in the same manner as the Chosen Undead, does this mean Chester is in possession of a fragment of the Pendant?

It's possible, I don't know how many other parts - if any - remain in the world, but that could certainly be one explanation.

To me, it seems like the only explanation as to why Manus would personally bring him to the past.

I really would have liked to see more backstory to the guy. It seems like he could have been a pretty significant part in the story if he was brought to the past for the same reasons as the Chosen Undead.

Could he be from the time set in DS2? I mean, he wears a mask, just as the enemies seen in the trailer; and I'm sure there is a reason behind the masks.

    "Of masks and dragons."

We'll have to wait and see, but I'm personally hoping Chester is from DkS II's time period. We'd be getting some awesome armor sets.

It'd be cool to see a younger/older version of him in DK2.

Look at Chester's outfit. Except that he's using a crossbow, his attire is closest to the 1700-1800's in our world. Aside from the fact that he has a mask, I see no similarities in the style of time period between Chester and what we've seen of Dark 2.

    Chester is Manus' great-granddaughter.

Or Chester is simply the Chosen undead in his world and brought into the same past as us due to the time fluctuation, similar to how Solaire sows up in our world in the present.

I swear his dialogue mentions something about the pendant...

I have a feeling chester has the other half of the broken pendant, but he's really not exactly the most trustworthy character in the game so if he's saying he doesn't know why.. then he probably knows why.

Just found his dialogue isn't on the wiki.. guess ill add that up

Edit: no mention of pendant, but as thought he is snatched by the shadowy limb

The only reason manus would have to do that would be for his pendant he longs for.. So I think for sure thats why he's there.

It COULD be because of the pendant, or it could be a relation to Dusk, we don't really know, but we do know that he had dealings with Elizabeth, most likely bad ones as he talks of her in a manner that points to him feeling she is pushy, and she says that he smells bad (not fragrant but as a bad person).

Also, he doesn't wear a mask, his hat is cursed. I personally think it's a nod to Alice in Wonderland's Cheshire Cat...a dubious character of malevolent intent who nevertheless helps you.

Good catch on the Alice in Wonderland nod. I didn't think of that, but it maked sense. A lot of sense really. Now, I don't know much about chest because I don't have the DLC, but my friend was kind enough to give me his Armor Set, and looking at that alone, I have come to the conclusion that:

    A) Chester is a chosen undead of his own land/time that came across a fragment of the pendant and Manus brought him back to claim it

    B) Chester is a simple nod to Alice in Wonderland with no more thought put into it. (His named being Chester could be a reference to the Chesire Cat, as they are somewhat similar names.)

    C) Chester is both A) and B)

    D) Chest is a Time Lord.

I always thought alvina was a sort of twisted nod to the Cheshire Cat, but I could see that being the case

Its also possible he is a nod to V from "V for Vendetta."

His hat does have a certain Guy Fawks look to it, further more, I read in the lore that he has a Rose Dagger and V had a whole Dagger and Rose motif going on throughout the movie.

Maybe a chimera-esque nod to Alice in Wonderland (The Chesire smile, with references of Giant Mushrooms, and coy behaviour) and V for Vendetta (the mask and rose coloured dagger, not to mention the clothes and he sells Lloyd's Talismans [The Author of V for Vendetta's graphic novel was David Lloyd - possible a happy coincedince])

I think the V link is much stronger. Lorewise there's no reason to put in a reference like that but his features certainly point to it.

True; however as Solaire tells us, Time in Lordran is warped. Besides, if Chester is taken from a further future, that could mean that in that future (which from chester's clothes we can loosly infer would be around Lordran's - or other country's - industrial period) the issues between Light and Dark still persist, or that fragments of the Pendant were still being found, and Manus (being pendant crazy) is dragging people from any time into his world.

Also, because of the way time travel works (according to H.G. Wells and the like) is the chosen undead stuck in an endless cycle of time travel and going back to fight Manus, Artorias, and the like?

Oi, Lloyd illustrated V. The illustrious and brilliant jerk Alan Moore wrote it, amongst his other masterpieces.

I rather dislike Moore to be honest but as one of my favorite writers in comics I feel compelled to clarify when needed. I half hate that I love his body of work so much haha. The man is a legend though. Even today, his stuff is so far ahead of the curve and I suspect it will remain that way. That's the timelessness of pathos for you I guess.

Remember, remember, the fifth of November...

I would say it's more a V link, but the American McGee reference would work too, or maybe he's the bastard child of the two. Who knows...I wish time in Louisa, Ky would warp so I could invade my future self and get DkS2 already.
