Smough's Hammer: Vastly Underrated? Empty Smough's Hammer: Vastly Underrated?

Post by Thundergrip Wed Mar 06, 2013 2:03 pm

What are you guys' thoughts on Smough's hammer?

Yes, to 1H it you need 58 strength, but that's completely doable for a SL 99 build, and it puts out possibly the best unbuffed damage in the game (thanks to it's strike damage type).

    Here's the build I've been using: http://mmdks.com/1d2u
I'm not one to brag, but I've been having great success.

I've never seen anyone else use this weapon. Anyone else like it? Thoughts on my build?

I tried and it hits hard, I would use more if it didn't block 70% of my screen.

It's underrated because of the high Str requirement for low AR and ridiculous weight. Also low SL makes it uncompetitive against Dex buipds which can easily have 1800 HP. The hammer best attack is the roll attack, you'll need fast roll. The build is terrible because it has very low HP while fat roll...imo tanks are supposed to have high HP. If you're having success with that you must be super skillful...

Edit: Just to show you how crippling it can be at SL 100, doesn't even have decent poise nor 1H.

I completely agree, it IS underrated. But some people think every weapon should be as good as any other or are just try-hards and don't use it. It looks awesome which imo, makes it more than usable silly

Also, low AR? The thing hits for about 650 strike damage at max strength, and that's more than almost any other weapon in the game.

You're going about it the wrong way: Of course if you go for the fast roll, the build is going to fall flat - speed is secondary when using the hammer, because you're not going to be avoiding them, you're going to be flattening them. Nobody's going to beat you out in a slugfest unless they're stacking poise, and nobody's going to outdamage you unless they're buffing, in which case just wait it out behind the greatshield.

The biggest threats to this build are casters, but you can switch the Giant shield for Havel's if you're worried.

Great Club has more AR than this thing at 40 Str 2H for 16 less weight and can be buffed. It has low AR for its weight and high requirements, it should be +800.

I hope I'm not missing something - Character planner has the Great Club at 657 AR, and Smough's at 652 AR. That's hardly a big difference. I'll concede the weight point, but I don't think you can include the buff because that would require points into INT or FAI.

Long story short, at the same stats, Smough's does about the same damage, and you get the bonus of regenerating health as you land hits (it's not nothing).

The roll R1 of the hammer is the best attack, it stuns most builds out there and can't be parried. The best way to do it is by fast rolling. The normal attacks are too slow and can't even stunlock, so it's a bad weapon for a tank.

Interesting! I was doing fine without the stunlock, mainly because 2 or so hits and it's all over. I've tried using it with the fast roll, but then the weight requirement becomes an issue. Sticking with the Tank-y goodness negates the weight factor entirely.

I don't know the technical term, but redirecting your attacks mid-swing turns the slow attack animations to your advantage - after the first swing, they try to circle around, and get hit full in the face with the second one right before they're in position to backstab. Simple but effective.

i like smsough's hammer but you must be fighter players that are new to pvp or be the best pvp'er ever, a decent pvp'er will just hit and run a build like that, or either parry or backstab you.

With all joking aside, are you on PS3? I would be very interested in a duel. If you truly defeated 30 different phantoms in a row without suffereing a single death with this exact build, then your skill rivals those of the greatest players in the game. Prayer

I'm on 360, but otherwise I'd have loved a good match.

I s**t you not on the 30 phantom kills - I had 1.2mil souls when I quit. I'm no PvP master - I was just in the forest at 10am east coast time, so I'm assuming there weren't many of the nightly players online.

It's not that hard to get good at countering circle BS, and varying one's attacks (or throwing in some kicks) to avoid being parried, so all the build hate here is taking me by surprise. Maybe tonight I'll get some "good" players who can show me the holes in my play. Here's hoping.

Edit: And what exactly am I getting wrong with my quote format? XD

Lightning resin buff, and poison resin buff.

You need to have this at the beginning [quote] and then the other one at the end. (except) with a backslash.

Yeah but 650 damage with a slow swing...the painting guardian sword for example when buffed with cmw does about 350 damage and you can swing it,like 5 times in quick succession...i personally think smoughs hammer is a bad weapon compared to all the other choices and way to much of a str requirement
