Best area for level design? Empty Best area for level design?

Post by MiketheMushroomMan Thu Mar 07, 2013 4:26 pm

What do you people think is the best designed area and why?

For me I think some levels are hugely imaginative, but others feel a little rushed or tacked on.

I think the cleverest level design is the Catacombes, and New Londo Ruins. The most epic is Anor Londo. I also like Darkroot Garden. Valley of Drakes is not up to much though. Neither is Lost Izalith or lower undead burg. I like most of the dlc areas and perhaps best of all is Royal Wood. That creepy baying sound like a demented cow far away always gets me!

I think I'm most impressed with the catacombs level design. Actually...all areas in dark souls are pretty amazing in some regard. Even Valley of Drakes works well, being just a connector for 4 different areas.

The only place that genuinely feels poorly designed to me is: without a single doubt in my mind, the lower undead burg. The lower Undead burg is the only place in the entire game that is a straight line from point A to B.

If ash lake were a little bit similar to ToG or Darkroot garden, it would definitely be my favorite place in all my gaming history happy

I just feel the way all these parts fit together in one contiguous world is the most breathtaking aspect of this game. How you can stand in Tomb and look out at Ash Lake, how you can see New Londo from Firelink. How a tunnel connects Firelink to lower Burg, which you can enter the Depth and reach Blighttown and climb back up to Firleink via New Londo. It is so immersive. You can feel the brick and mortar of this game as if it was really made stone by stone by a civilization of people.

I'm with Rynn with this one. It could have been much better.

I definitely agree. Also, there is so many places that looks like other areas, and that have closed doors. Even if you can't be there, the whole idea behind those scenarios its pretty cool. You can imagine how places used to be or how they still exists but you can't reach them

Like lower Anor Londo. The mountain between Sen and Anor. Closed doors on Lost Izalith, more ash lake (its like the bottom of the nexus :O ), etc

I really like the Undead Burg for this, specifically the Hellkite Bridge and the overlook with Solaire.

I was very frightened of the Depths and Blighttown at first, but for some reason I like those places very much.

Also, has anyone seen the Hobbit? (maybe a spoiler alert)

the catacombs has tha classic level design i loved in demon's souls, the worse for me is anor londo, that thing is so plain looking and uninspired it just feelss like a chore whenever i get there.

Duke's is cool, but I hate it so much. I hate how those damnable tables can't be broken by rolling! You have to attack them! Why just those pieces of furniture?

    Nice pun lol!

I think the worst level is Lost Izalith. I mean ... dragon butts? Really? Also, I hate that lava glow. It makes it hard to see. The worst part is when you lose your blood stain, and it appears in the middle of the lava. It's almost impossible to find when that happens. There's a mod on the internet for reduced lave glow for all you PC people.

I think the best area is Darkroot Garden. It's diffrent from the other areas and looks nice.

The Abyss was cool, because I never seen anything like it in a game before.
