Disregard consoles or when the games were made, I'm sure most of you guys have games that you love and cherish that never made widespread fame or mainstream popularity. Maybe the game is even unpopular and it's your guilty pleasure. What are they? Why?

Some of mine are Valkyria Chronicles, Demon's Souls, Vanquish, Siren: Blood Curse, Baldur's Gate Collection, Fallout I/II

Valkyria Chronicles - PS3 exclusive that focuses on leading a small platoon of soldiers against an evil empire. Small unit tactics/turn-based done right. Epic story enough to make you bawww on par with FFX's story.

    Demon's Souls
    - duh. next.

    Vanquish
    - PS3 exclusive. It's like Max Payne in space but faster and more epic. Story is borderline retarded but the game is oh so fun. The game is so fluid and action is so good.

    Siren: Blood Curse
    - PS3 exclusive, US players can only DL this game from the PS Store. A re-make of the original Siren, this is survival horror, not that crap Silent Hill or RE claims to be now a days. Broken into chapters with different characters, one of them makes you play a scared little girl in a dark hospital full of monsters. Great horror game.

    Baldur's Gate Collection
    - PC version, not the crappy console games with the same name. The BG1, ToSC, BG2 and ToB single most epic saga of D&D based games, bar none. Countless days were lost to this great game. This is the best RPG game, bar none. This is from days of yore when grinding wasn't a thing, roleplay was important and sword and sorcery at its finest.

    Fallout I/II
    - Their sequels are well known, but not so many people nowadays have played the original two games. Gritty and full of pop-culture reference, it was you, a dog, a Highwayman with half a tank of fusion cell and the vast post-apocalyptic west coast. A must play. Captivating storyline and merciless (and awesome) enemies. Dying was almost as fun as killing the enemies.

    Adding to your list:

3D Dot Game Hero's: A PS3 exclusive thats a tribute to old school Zelda, so much that it borrows the exact formula of the games... Its hard, its addicting and it'll give you more hours of play than your average game for 14.99.

Phantasy Star Online Episodes I&II: They were really popular back when the servers were online but not so much now. Everything about this game is out dated yet I can still play it for hours on end without stopping. I put an emulator on my computer so I could play this again.

Custom Robo: Armored Core without the hardcore gaming. Hours of fun when I was 12, hours of fun when I'm 20. Its great because the game is really only as challenging as you want it to be. And you're fighting robots, thats never not cool.

Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles: This game took a lot of heat bearing the FF name but bring a few friends and a few gbas and you've got a fun night of drinking ahead.

The Disgaea series! Tactical RPG with outlandish stories, deep gameplay, and ridiculous post-game replay value. The thing about this series is there is so much hidden depth. The gameplay looks like your average TRPG at first, but when you dive into the Item World (and the new Character World), creating your own characters from a huge roster of human and monster characters, and reincarnating your characters, there's a lot to consider. Also the stories and characters seem silly at first, but there's always deeper meaning and connections, and great twists. Very rewarding stories, but definitely not devoid of humor!

    @OP

I played Valkyria Chronicles 2 on PSP. Wasn't very interested in the first VC back then, but I absolutely loved it on PSP. I hear the story isn't nearly as good, but the gameplay was incredibly good for a portable game. One of the best games I've played on PSP, easily.

^At least you did your part! A friend of mine has one too... so that's at least 3 sold.

I'll get one after the hardware revision. I'd like it to be smaller, and have an internal HDD. Like my PSP Go! I love that thing...

Legend of Dragoon. Outside the most nerdy circles this game is in complete obscurity, especially in europe where it probably didn't sell even 10,000 copies.

    Demons souls is undervalued.

Okami. the fact it's the least commercially successful winner of a game of the year award says it all.

Football manager. Noone outside of England will understand this, but this is probably the most addictive game I have played in my life. I have had every single one (till this year as i would just play it instead of working) since 2008. To put this **** into perspective, one save file I have usually has playtime of at least 10-15 days, and I have 2/3 saves per game usually, sometimes more.

Oh god, i love FFCC. I've never been a fan of the FF series, but i loved FFCC. It was such a great game. I only ever hated the fact that you needed a damn gameboy or whatever kind of handheld controller to play more than one player in the game. I was also always uncertain of whether it was part of the FF series due to the fact that it was so very different from all the other FF games. Love it. <3

Underrated? No, not at all. But upon release it got quite a lot of critique, which is why i wrote it.

Edit: The title also states "knows/cares about". And i feel that not a lot of people care about the game. :|

Edit2: I was actually part of a Fable Forum once. It was more or less 50-50 on who liked and disliked the game.

Okami deffo, I played it on the Wii and loved every second of it.

Tales of Symphonia for the Gamecube, Tales of the Abyss for 3ds/PS2 and Tales of Vesperia for Xbox.

hell add most Tales games there, I feel that they are very undervalued for the quality and effort of the game.

Amazing Island is another one for the Gamecube that I enjoyed, but I never heard of anyone else playing it.

None of the FF games are really connected and some of them really branch off from the others. I'm not a FF fan at all but my friend's have convinced me to give FFVII a go now that I have ePSXe on my laptop.

Age of Empires II: played it a lot up until about a year ago (released in 1999). In terms of depth of strategies and balance of units, it's still by far the best RTS I've ever played.

Delta Force series: very underrated shooters IMO, although the multiplayer has always been basically unplayable due to all the hackers. But a shooter where you die in 1-2 shots forces you to move carefully and strategically, which makes it much more realistic than most shooters where you can single-handedly mow down an entire army while eating hundreds of rounds in the face.

Brutal Legend: more of an interactive movie + jukebox for metalheads like me, as the gameplay is clumsy and boring. But the story is freaking hilarious and of course the soundtrack is loaded with great metal music, both old and new.

The original SoulCalibur for Dreamcast. Heck, the entire Dreamcast console qualifies for this thread.

Dance Dance Revolution: still play it all the time, partially as exercise.

nuh uh! I had a blast playing that for the whole month my ps2 worked after i got it. My favorite thing to do was unleash the tyrannosaur on all of the visitors for them REFUSING to throw their trash away (seriously, i filled my park with trashcans and janitors to the point where you'd have to TRY to not find one). i only wish you could have every dinosaur in your park without cheats. thats my only gripe!

Arcanum: of steamworks and magic obscura

    This game was/is soooo underrated.
It was a game from creators of Fallout and other great titles about world with elves, dwarfs, gnomes and of course humans that suddenly gets hit by a technological revolution leading into conflict between magic and technology. This conflict can be seen on every city you enter and every character you speak with.
Game had very unique victorian/steampunkish style with unbelieveable soundtrack played by string quartet.
Anyone who hasn't played this and enjoyed old school RPG (expecially Fallout fans!) should play this game.

    The GOOD/BAD:

+ Unique take on Tolkien style fantasy with Victorian/Steampunkish spin
+ HUGE world, with tons of hidden locations (easily 100 hours if you search all locations)
+ One of the best soundtracks ever made in a video game
+ Interesting story, quests and characters

    - Buggy as hell (there are fan patches available to fix all of the bugs though)
    - Combat system is a bit clunky
    - Outdated graphics

I gotta add gotcha force to my list. That game is a cult classic now, but seriously underappreciated, but especially not well known. Needs some publicity.

Dark Chronicle. A PS2 game i borrowed off my friend, blew my mind and wish i'd owned ever since. It's ridiculously rare in england though so sadly i probably will never get a copy.

    As longshot said :
    - Baldur's Gate PC collection : there is actually a remake of BG1 that was released recently. I didn't play it, but it's seems it keeps the old school look with better graphics, improved gameplay and maybe even some new content. I will try it sooner or later.
    - Fallout I/II : Especialy Fallout 1. I admit I didn't finish Fallout 2
    - Demon's Souls

These are not unpopular, they are just kinda underground.
I would add these ones :
    - Planescape Torment : If you liked Baldur's Gate, you will love it. The difference is a bit like the difference between Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, both use similar mecanics, graphics and styles but the contexts and universes are different.
Planescape is darker that Baldur's Gate, in strange worlds lost between planes of existence where death is omnipresent. It has some kind of Dark Souls feeling, the hero cannot die definitively and will restart at the morgue each times he is killed.
The story revolves around his lost mortality and memories. A must play for RPG fans. It has also some very cult citations : "One more comment like this and you'll be wearing your *** as a hat"
    - Super Metroid (SNES) : Like the other games previously listed, this one is very appreciated by it's fans. This is the best metroid game imo (metroid fusion is quiet good too), a huge semi-open world à la Dark Souls, good atmosphere, excelent gameplay, nice new items and skills, full of secrets and tricks to perform, replayable infinitely.
Even the glitches and exploits in the game makes it interesting
This is the game I played the most in my life, it might very well be my all time favorite. I used to finish it at least one time/day when I was a teenager, and this for several years. I still play some runs on my SNES occasionaly, trying to perform old and new trics to finish de game as fast as possible.
It didn't go mainstream nonetheless, probably because it's a lonely adventure, a bit too dark, and maybe because it got out at the same period as big titles like Donkey Kong Country.
    - Secret of Evermore (SNES) : Everyone knows and love Secret of Mana, and there's a reason for that, the game is awesome. But why didn't Secret of Evermore get the same love?
Some waited it as the next episode of SoM, but though it was the same kind of game, the story and atmosphere were totaly different.
SoE is darker, stronger, lonelier, and overall it's for a more mature audience.
There are less flashy colors and happy music, and a lot of places just have the ambiant sounds of the wind, distant birds or other creatures. The weapon system is better as "farming" things like spheres was removed from the game, and weapons have only have 3 levels (you don't need to charge 8-9 bars for 30s or so to unleash your strongest attack. If your weapon doesn't do enough damage, it's probably because there is one stronger to be found).
The only thing in SoE that is inferior to SoM is the lack of multiplayer coop.

Tell me more about this BG1 remake - is it like the failure of a port to console version or is it f'real?

Fallout 2 lacks the "unforgiving wasteland" feel but definitely a fun play. Suggest you reload it. I will look into Planescape, I've always wanted to but never had the opportunity.

    to add to the thread...

Populous: The Beginning - probably a game where everyone's heard of it, but never actually played it. PLAY it. Bullfrog made a planet game map that was practical as it was innovative. You really feel like you *own* your tribe and that you are leading them to glory over the others in your quest for godhood. I will never tire of sending bolts of lightning to assassinate enemy shamans or going all MGS by sneaking my shaman into an enemy village and unleashing pestilence, volcano, ANGEL OF DEATH LOLPWN, twisters, brainwashing their warriors and priests for rapage, and fireballing the dying just because.

Handcrafting an armada of firewarrior balloons for steel rain, building houses in remote corners of the globe, sinking entire continents... the spell Armageddon and the final level where no one is safe from your wrath... this game had it all. Beautiful, unique art direction. Definitely worth picking up. No game has come since in its likeness. Probably the best RTS ever, and it had less than 10 units.
