New Forum Event: Dark Souls Fencing Lunapi14

A brand new forum event with a unique and exciting format; proudly brought to you by the Messengers of Velka; harbingers of justice and vengeance

New Forum Event: Dark Souls Fencing Lunapi20

Who: Everyone!  Tell your friends, tell your enemies, spread the word!!!

When: July 20th, 9am-9pm PST (noon to midnight EST)

Where:  The Undead Parish.  Duels will take place on the bridge with the alluring skulls.  Summon signs are to be placed in the open area leading to the bridge, near the stairs up to the area.  Hosts will observe duels from the vantage point to the left of the stairs.

This event is designed to celebrate the growth and success of our young covenant and spread the Message of Velka.   We want to bring a unique and fun event to our forum brothers and sisters.  Dark Souls fencing is meant to be fun and easy to access.  The rules are designed to maximize the role-play elements of fencing as well as the competitive and tactical aspects.

New Forum Event: Dark Souls Fencing Lunapi21

    Rules:

    • Max SL 100
    • You must dual wield any combination of the Estoc, Rapier, Velka's Rapier or Ricard's Rapier
    • No 2-handing a weapon at any time
    • Your chest, arm and leg armor must all be zero poise
    • You must wear a helmet with poise, but NOT Havel's
    • Wolf, Leo, Hornet & Dark Wood Grain rings are forbidden
    • No item usage whatsoever (flasks, humanity, green blossoms, buffs, etc.)
    • No rolling
    • Stay on the bridge, in front of and facing your opponent at all times (yes, this means no back-stabs)
    • And of course... no castings!

Rolling is prohibited, however, it is understood it will happen on accident.  Backwards and side rolling are easy to do on accident so hosts should have a lenient attitude toward these rolls.  Front rolling however, should be easy to avoid doing and can offer a great advantage.   So, hosts should be less lenient especially if the offender presses an advantage gained by forward rolling.  Falling off the bridge will happen on accident as well; the punishment will be the fall damage.  If you fall make your way back to the bridge and the fight will reset without any healing. In the event of an accidental back-stab both fighters should heal and restart the match.

The two combatants will face off in the middle of the bridge standing approximately two sword lengths from eachother.  Both will bow when ready and the duel will commence when the last bow animation ends.  Dark Souls Fencing will be based on the roots of fencing, in other words: the last one to die wins.  twisted

Thank you to everyone who has helped with the planning for this event.  Thanks to Swordiris for creating the Messengers of Velka and his support and feedback.  Thank you to the Messengers who gave me feedback, suggestions and ecouragement on the OP; Sword, Soris Ice Goldwing (aka Iceman, Soris, Captain Goldwing, etc.), Renny, Squashy_Avacado (come back!), Zwanzig-Tausend (aka 20), Latitoast & IceGodzilla.  And thanks to Luvz2fight (now known as Paragon) who did all the above, tested with me and fought off the invaders while I was on my fencing only build in the Parish.  To my credit, though -- I got that one jerk in New Londo!  silly   And also thanks to Ahhotep1 for pointing us toward the Playstation Event calendar -- twice, as I'm writing this I notice she's posted here now. big grin

If I forgot you, feel free to PM me: "hey! ya jerk you forgot me!"

It might be a good idea to allow backstepping, not enough people use backstepping. Then again that might cause people to roll on accident more.

No, the it's the bridge with the 2 hollow soldiers and the alluring skulls with crossbows just above the boar.

    Back-stepping is definitely allowed.

HOLY F*** ARE YOU MY MIND?

I've had the slowest, most boring day at work and all I've thought about is making a cool poster (like the ones Baal does) for an SL55 Fencing tourney.
TO BE HELD JUST TO THE SIDE OF THAT BRIDGE (the area where the spear guy lurks)!

Honestly I'm creeped out right now.

Dress code was to be Painting Guardian Legs, Gloves and Chest with either the Elite Knight Helm or the Eastern helm (imo they look the most like the fencing ones), no Wolf/Hornet/Leo Ring allowed and no elemental weapons either.

Biggest difference I was thinking is that offhand was allowed to be either a Piercing Sword, Dagger, or Buckler/Target. But with the way you have it set up your rules are better. I would say that no offhand is truer though.

Also you forgot the Mail Breaker

LOL -- stiffnipples... I'm quite relieved I beat you to the punch. I would have been sick. We've been working on this a while and I actually first thought of the idea of fencing in dark souls when I was trying to dual wield a long time ago. In fact, I had forgotten all about it and didn't even think of it right away when we were brainstorming ideas for an event.

Anyway, the mail breaker is not allowed; mostly just because it doesn't look like a fencing rapier and I didn't really think people would want to use it anyway. I'm sure the mail breaker in the build posted by our fearless leader is there by mistake *COUGH, COUGH*. The dual rapiers is merely to allow people to parry and have more than one attack.

Rolling is going to happen, but like I said the front roll is the real problem because it's the most advantageous. But, it's also the easiest to avoid. Side roll will make you fall almost always and you should take damage (perhaps not if you fall to the high side -- I forget), so that should work a good deterent. If you roll off the bridge, just run back and resume the dual. The fencer who didn't fall should position him/herself next to the wall so the dual can resume immediately.

You know I'd love to join Hugh, but... the event starting at 9AM PST (GMT-7) means it starts at 5PM EST (GMT+1), and seeing as it supposedly lasts twelve hours, if that really would be the case, it literally means a night without sleep.
    ...but well, it's July. XD

Anyway, since way too many are already signed up as hosts for ps3, I'll sign up as a duelist only (though I would be most willing to be the host anyway).

Depending on circumstances, I may have to denounce my participation, I'll be sure to PM you once everything is solid as Havel's Armour.

(And I have a slot open on my main account again, so might ask you to mule me for the event. Maybe I'll just keep a slot for events on my main due to customisation and stuff, do want to look good on serious builds ;p)

It's weird how it's worked out. I was watching some Some guy (what a strange autoreplace) vid where he was invaded in the Parish and fought a guy just to the side of the Alluring Skull bridge. I thought it was a pretty cool location as it's not huge and it has a cliff edge without a wall (environmental hazard). I though hosting an event there would be cool, everyone could just throw their signs down on the bridge and they could fight either below the bridge in between the two fires, or to the side of the bridge near the ledge.

Then I was wasting time making builds, and trying to work out the difference between the Knight Helm and the Elite Knight Helm, and I started thinking of themed invasions. Where I could invade wearing the Knight Helm and instead of bowing I would facepalm and menu swap to the Elite Knight Helm (close the visor). This got me thinking of a Fencing build, close the visor and use Ricards 'en garde' to signal ready to fight. This then lead to 'hey a fencing tourney would be cool'.

I'm guessing your thought process was nothing like that, but it's weird how similar the outcomes were. I guess we're just that awesome New Forum Event: Dark Souls Fencing 2640184516

Yeah that's fair enough, it does look more like the parrying dagger than a rapier.
It's good in the off hand due to the low weight, but that's about it.

If the event goes well I might have to copy the idea and propose an SL55 event of a similar nature since I'll miss out on this one by a few days

Giant helm is the best helm legal for this event imo.

    Most poise after havels.

    Actually stone/gaurdian have 15 poise, since havel's isn't allowed.

However the Best Helm I think is the Black Iron, 12 poise is enough to take 2 1h rapier hits (6 is the 1h breakpoint according to the wiki so 12 will cover 2 hits with a teeny bit of breathing room) And it has the highest Trust defence of any helm.

    http://mmdks.com/2lxg

That armor set up is specially made to resist physical thrusting damage. This is the build I myself, along with any other super serious min maxers will bring.

Havel's is the only helm that can tank 3 1-hand rapier thrusts at 18 poise. There are a few helms in the 11-15 range (that can tank 2, but not 3 hits); stone (15), guardian (15), giants (14), gollem (13), fang boar (12), black iron (12) and... the symbol of avarice (15!). Shrug I didn't realize that until I just checked -- I never used that for a poise break for some crazy reason.
