I voted both yes and no. Dark Souls is a great game, but i've had friends saying they don't mind "difficulty", but then ended up buying the wrong game. None of them still play it. The game does not "require" you to die, however, you most likely will, as it's part of the process. I don't wanna speak for anyone, but i think we can all say that we've died even to the most idiotic of things in this game, and i mean all of us on the forum.
The game will give you certain hints as to what will appear next, such as that elevator you mentioned. There will be blood stains on it, which should be hint enough for you to understand if you "THINK" about it.
Dark Souls isn't really a hard game, you just have to understand how bosses move, you have to practice timing etc.
It's a great game, but also a punishing one. Some players would say, no, in fact most players would say that you're better off not spoiling too much of the game, because the challenge is so rewarding afterwards. I kinda missed out on that, so i simply agree with it.
So if you don't mind dying a lot, if you don't mind losing the "souls", which are by the way, kind of like experience points you need to use at a "bonfire" to level up and purchase stuff with, then yes, it's the game for you. You have to play carefully and you have to memorize certain enemy patterns.
So all in all, paying attention is the key to success in this game.
