    knutaf0's Dark Souls Science

Post by Sentiel on Tue Feb 26, 2013 5:53 am

I don't know if knutaf0 is a member of this forum, so I'll take the liberty of posting his new science videos here for all of you to watch.

    Differences Fast Roll speeds

Counter and Instability Damage and how Leo Ring affects them.

    Different swing speeds of UGS.

    Headshots and limbshots

    Different Medium Roll recovery times

One more about Leo Ring and damage types. I posted it in the wiki section, but I'll post it here as well.

I'm sure he will make more.

I like the Leo Ring one because people kept trying to tell me that Leo Ring affects damage when you hit somebody who is rolling/running.

    *** you, EWGF.

    That explains a lot...

I was doing some damage tests with a Silver Knight Straightsword a while ago and never got bonus damage when I attacked during an enemy's attack. I did get bonus damage, though, when attacking them during their attack's recovery (or cooldown) phase (so that time after the attack until you regain control of your actions--like rolling away, for example). I also got bonus damage when attacking them while they were recovering from a fall.

Counter damage applying only to thrusting attacks makes sense, then. I also think there are more "instability" cases than the ones knutaf0 tested, though. As a rule of thumb, I'd say, any time you can't instantly perform a roll, you can be hit for "instability" damage. Example: while rolling, sprinting, being guard-broken, during your attack's cooldown phase, etc.; you can't roll, it counts as instability damage.

Was this in PvP or PvE?

@Saint: PvE--just some quick and easy damage tests against the firelink hollows. That's why I mentioned the fall-recovery bonus damage, since that second hollow usually falls from the stairs!

Hmm, does this contradict anything from ENB's Leo Ring video?

These videos are excellent. I knew there was some sort of mechanic for "instability" damage, but I didn't know the exact circumstances and the explanation was very enlightening.

It applies to PvE as well - it's easy to see on Artorias. With all of his jumping around it's not hard to get a hit on him right after he jumps off the ground (especially in co-op). You'll see the increase in damage he takes when you hit him during his jump, as opposed to when he's grounded.
