Well I do actually, I wouldn't be playing new game+ that's for sure. A few (sometimes a lot) of well placed arrows have saved me more grief than any other weapon I know of. As ranged attacks go I've found them far more useful than spells. For example last session I offed the fire bombing giant at the top of Sens with my Compound Long Bow+14 and in my first play through Ceaseless Discharge was dispatched the same way.

What I don't get is why there are not more posts on use of bows. Is it because people think it's a sneaky, even cheap modus operandi? I'd like to point out that I do use melee a lot too and of course I had to go 'toe to toe' with a lot of bosses including 'El Cinder' at the end.

Back on my first playthrough, when I had no idea how the game worked, I used the Black Bow of Pharis +5 for almost the entire game. Got me past the dukes archives, blightown, sens fortress, demon ruins and Anor Londo when I was tooo scared to fight the enemies in melee combat.

I wonder too why there are almost no threads about bows.

My build has 40 Str and Dex and I love my +14 Pharis Bow.

I've always had a bow equipped in my shield hand since I first got one, you just need it to lure enemies to you for example, and also I use it a lot to scope out the area!

don't forget that damned lightning shooting snake-man that sits above the first thin bridge in sen's, that's killed me more than once by nicking me and staggering me in the path of a swinging axe or a charging serpent-man

Yes, bows are great. I've recently become more fond of the lock on firing rather than the zoom, since it lets you operate better in close melee. Plus with the fog ring and hawk ring it's fun to announce your presence in PvP with an arrow to the head from a mile away. Great in the forest, it's like stepping on an anthill

I use my +15 Black Bow of Pharis to draw enemies into harvesting range with my Scythe. In NG a bow was one of my primary weapons as head shots can kill many enemies outright. I also used this with poison arrows to farm souls in Anor Londo (pre-dark). In NG with bow doing at least 25ish damage (so not much) the poison will kill the Giants by the first bonfire. Sooooo....three quick arrows to six Giants....run to the stairs and kill two more Giants (bow can be fast if upgraded), melee two Gargoyles by the Blacksmith, around to the Silver Knight, Power within and arrows to the last two giants and I am 20k souls better and often a titanite chunk or two. Although I now have about eight hundred Giant halberds. Hawk Ring allowed me to poison the Taurus Demon crew in Demon Ruins too without them getting all angry at me.

I used one quite a bit on my first playthrough. Mostly it was to draw out enemies one at a time and fight them melee though, so I wouldn't have to fight groups.

But eventually I got so familiar with the game (as have many people on these forums!) that I can just run past 99% of the mobs in the game anyways! And the few I do kill, are either with a parry or a backstab. So even if I take a group on, I don't need to separate them anymore because you're invulnerable while you're performing a critical hit. I don't use a shield anymore either so I've gotten really good at dodging everything, which also allows me to take on groups without trouble.

So bows definitely serve their purpose. But when you get really familiar with the game, they kind of become obsolete. I'm really tempted to make a new bow & shotel build for invading though.

i always carry a strong bow, usually the compound at +15, does only slightly less than my melee weapon and poison arrows are great, also if you find the points where you can snipe enemies with out aggroing them its great for farming etc (like the cleric giants in anorlondo, stay at the top of the stairs and shoot one for 3k souls then move onto the second landing againtst the wall halfway back and aim at the other one (you may have to wait for him to settle back into his guard position as going down the first flight of stairs makes him notice but not aggro against you.))

Even knowing where foes are, I still find the bow useful for a variety of ones that are just too annoying to deal with up close. Like my archnemesis, titanite Demons. I love just standing off and plugging those jerks with arrows with the hawk ring. The respawning one in Izalith can even be shot in the tail for fairly good dmg without aggroing him. And yeah, poison arrows are fun. Most other demons can be poisoned pretty easily, particularly in demon ruins.

I relied on my bow for just about everything my first play through. That's why I'm changing it up now.

But yeah, I used my bow to kill every titanite Demon, Seath (I just kited him around), and I'm sure I poisoned a bunch of other guys.
