    My Verdict on Demon's

Post by Serious_Much on Fri Feb 24, 2012 3:30 pm

After 32 hours to finish Demon's (wasn't rushing, seeing everything I could pretty much), thought I'd give you my thoughts. This isn't a review or anything, I'm just putting out my view on the difficulty and differences between the games, as many who played demon's first said Dark was a walk in the park. I have to say my venture to Boletaria was much like that, though Ill be objective and compare the difficulty based on how i find Dark now rather than my first playthrough.

Before I note upon the worlds, I will first give a comparison of difficulty for those who don't care enough to read complete analysis. Overall, the games have very similar difficulty, but they are reversals of each other. Demon's is much harder in terms of general mobs, the main reason being the lack of poise, but also i think the moves of many enemies are more difficult to read and adjust to that in Dark. However, these more difficult mobs fail to overpower when you can have magical healing grass and regen items available left right and centre.

However Dark's bosses are more difficult on the whole. Every boss in Demon's I either killed on the first or second attempt (the exception being the maneaters, not because i found them hard but because i decided rolling off a bridge would be a good idea). If you compare bosses such as phalanx, armour spider and adjudicator to those such as the gargoyles or quelaag, there is pretty much no comparison. Later bosses even the dragon god and maiden astrea i killed on the first attempt. I think though that the reason for this is the fact many bosses have a quirk, such as fool's idol's invincibility or Old Hero's blindness, whilst Dark Soul's bosses focus more on difficulty, with less have features like this (though seath and bed of chaos break the mould).

The worlds i see are very much the inspiration for areas in dark, the prison in 3-1, all of world 1 and valley of defilement are very much carbon copied in Dark souls, and also bosses seemed to be reminiscent of one another, however the bosses seemed more innovative in Demon's souls (my personal favourites being the phalanx and fool's idol, i thought the ideas were particularly unique for those two. My personal favourite world was Latria, the atmosphere was haunting and intriguing, with 3-2 being the best area in my opinion, stepping for the first time out into the wide expanse suspended in nothingness was awesome. I also enjoyed the insta kill you receive as reward for killing the tutorial boss (even though i created a 2nd character to see what happens when someone mentioned it), I thought it would be a very good welcome to a new player introducing what it's all about lots and lots of deaths.

In terms of comparing equipment and such, the amount available was a slight disappointment, nothing compared to the variety i found in Dark Souls, I could even count the number of armour sets I found on my fingers.. However I loved the idea of using boss souls to create spells (even though i couldn't use them by self limitation) and the upgrade system i feel is much better and less restricted than in Dark Souls. Seriously where the status effect weapons gone?!

Finally I come to my personal preference between the two. It has to be Dark for me, and i don't doubt it is because that is the first one I played but i feel that the more variety with the weapons and armour and the more free world to explore wins it for me. (even though this won't be popular with Fex and Emergence I'm sure silly).

Anyway, essay over. Please feel free to discuss what I've written and such. If I've missed anything particularly vital then also mention that too so I can add it it big grin

Dark is an upgraded version of Demon's. But I really really liked Demon's lore, and I enjoyed so much playing it! But after finishing it, I felt there was nothing more to do. In dark, you can have more options and you are more free to do whatever you want.

Yeah, the bosses were easier in Demon's. You could kill almost all of them with bow and arrows.

I have to admit I was tempted to do this, but I forced myself not to. All of them I did melee except Storm King, bow and arrow that thing to death, had to really.

Also who was it who said large sword of searching wasn't very good? I'm absolutely loving this thing, it looks badass as well.

I'd love to see some Demon's Souls action get "revived". Loved that game to death.

I said that about the LSoS. Meaning that you would get better damage output with a standard curved sword at Sharp +5, if you have the moxie to farm a pure bladestone. It looks killer, but the reach is deceiving. It doesn't extend much further than a falchion if at all.

There are some bosses in Demon's that are pretty tough based on the type of character you have. For magic, it was Maneater for me by far. Flamelurker isn't bad if you have the PFS. But most of the bosses are quite easy for that kind of character. In fact it's not hard to beat them without even being in danger of being hit, like Leechmonger.

i liked the way demon never held your hand for anything
    specially upgrading weapons

each upgrade patch had a diferent type of material

and the materials would need a lot of time to get specially the "pure" version of them which are the strongest version in which you need to completely max out the weapons

they're completely hard as **** to get seriously

Pure bladestone took me HOURS AND HOURS to get

    /////

    bosses being more difficult

well for me were demon's souls bosses specially old king allant boss fight on 1-5

bastard would hit for a **** ton of damage and he had a LEVEL drain attack (im not kidding he would take away one level out of you)

but if you knew the weakness of the bosses such as flamelurker is weak as balls to magic

i liked the unique features on the bosses specially the arch demon of wolrd 4 (shrine of storms) you needed a *** sword that can control the skies to beat the damn thing

See for me allant wasn't that powerful, each hit did half my health at most (made sure i was human) and 2nd time when i killed him i ended up kicking his *** when i used dark silver shield which gave me better magic defence. Yeah that level drain attack I thought was hilarious, should be another one in Dark souls i think.

Maybe it's because you played demon's first, but to me they seem less difficult simply because they have specific things you can take advantage of, well except allant and flamelurker those two were toe to toe all the way, but even then they weren't insanely difficult.. (though i did run when i saw a sign on the floor telling me i needed a magic weapon and got one)

You can run away to heal easier on demons which helps a lot in bosses as well as the almost infinite heal pretty much using endless grass supply

Personally for me, the starkest departure was the upgrade system. Demon's was something you could just sink your teeth into with all the different stones and branches. Sometimes people bemoan farming but it does give you the opportunity to spend time with the world and let it sink in. Even though the weaponry was limited I liked how some weapons were effectively blocked out if you choose a certain path. It encouraged me to be more creative than I am now.

In Dark if you want a fast alternative to your primary Greatsword, you simply make a Lightning Shotel or Uchi. This is great in it's own regard. Getting what you need is quick and easy and relatively painless allowing you to focus on the gameplay and huge world.

I think because of these pretty huge fundamental differences, it is tough for me to really compare these games. They really are two quite distinct animals and I believe From intended to create two different experiences with them. Neither one really recreates the feelings of the other one in my opinion, and I feel they are purposefully complimentary experiences.

Dark Souls gets my vote. Demons was a great game but the thing that spoiled it for me was theWorld Tendency mechanic. I really, really wanted the Talisman of Beasts and that big meat cleaver weapon from the Dragon Boss area but no matter what I did my world was usually a dirty grey, never pure white or pure black which was very limiting. I read somewhere that to get a pure black world you had to keep committing suicide in the Nexus and I never found out how to get a pure white world but then I didn't have the guide, neither did I explore the wiki (was there one?), so it's probably my fault.

I do believe that the servers are still on, people I know played on it a few months ago, don't know if things changed since then. World tendency ranged from pure black to pure white in EACH world in demon souls. From neutral, you could gain up to three levels in the dark direction or the white direction. Dark was gained through death in that world or through killing a player in that world. White was gained by killing a boss in the world or by helping someone to defeat a boss in that world. People committed suicide in the nexus since death there did not affect world tendency, so when they beat a boss they would go die in the nexus to become a shade to avoid blackening their world.

Okay, here we go then, review time:

I agree with you in that the majority of bosses in Demon Souls were rather easy IF you used the cheat methods (which I often do). Otherwise, I found a lot of the bosses in Demon Souls quite a bit more difficult than those in Dark Souls.

In terms of mobs, I found those in dark souls probably easier than those in demon souls. However, the mobs in dark souls were much larger, but I found that there were ultimately more ways to fight them indirectly or one at a time than in demon souls.

Note that the above to points though are likely influenced by the fact that I played Demon Souls first. I most likely improved greatly between demon souls and dark souls. So maybe if I went back and played demon souls I would find it easier now.

Regardless of the above, I would agree with you on your equipment point. I found the equipment in dark souls more varied and fleshed out than in demon souls. I also liked the idea of using different blacksmiths for different things. It gave a more rpg feeling to me. The idea of equip burdens, movement speeds (being more fleshed out in dark souls) and the armor types to make the equipment feel more significant in dark souls (although that also came with its own problems).

As for which game I prefer, I would say dark, I find the world (not necessarily the story) more interesting. I also really enjoy the online functions in dark souls, which made my experience with the game feel more complete (though I never really did online in demon souls silly (notice the trend here)).

how was your experience with the giant depraved ones in the valley of deffilement?
(you know those giant, ugly, bastards holding a giant club)

on NG+ they hit wayy too fast and each hit should take out about 1/2 or 1/3 out of you and knocking you to the ground

oh and they will hit again as soon as you get up from their first attack

if you get pure black tendency and you see one giant black phanton depraved one RUN they can one-shot you even if oyu have over 1500 HP and you're in human form

what mobs did you had trouble with in the game?

I thought Demon Souls was much harder than Dark Souls (played Dark Souls first). Bosses, mobs, everything were less forgiving, plus no bonfire waypoints halfway through the levels. I died to every Demon Soul's boss at least once, while there are many Dark Souls bosses I've never lost to (including Gwyn himself), and I'm not a great Dark Souls player. Many Demon Soul's bosses "press" harder than in Dark souls, leaving you less room to manuver and time to heal. And that move by those snake guards in the tower of Latria where they electrostun you from a distance and then pick you up and kill you is pure evil.

I also liked the level design better in Demon Soul's. Everything is much darker, plus stonefang feels like the Mines of Moria or something. Dark Souls is a lot of fun, but it's not quite as good. Plus PvP, while more varied, suffers from terrible backstab implementation.

The Demon Souls servers are still up, and there is still pretty good activity within certain soul levels. Even where there isn't, it makes it a lot easier to coop with a friend because you're sure to find one another quickly. Really fun
