    Bard songs Empty Bard songs

This may seem stupid, but I think it would be rather interesting to add another type of magic. The magic would be music. Much like sorcery is focused through catalysts, and miracles through talismans, and pyromancy through flames, music/songs would be focused through harps. Harps and their respective songs would grant small buffs or debuffs. Nothing game breaking, mind you. Just small. Now the strange thing would be scaling. Scaling could either work like pyromancy ,where a trainer would upgrade the various harps and scaling would directly correlate with the harp or, it could scale with a stat. It may seem like an odd choice, but attunement might be a good stat for it to scale with. (geddit? atTUNEment). This would also give some incentive to continue leveling attunement past 50 if you are going for a high SL character. I think that the role of "bard" would add a new supportive dimension to cooperative play. Also, I grew up as a final fantasy freak and bards were always my favorite job(despite how unappreciated they always were). For those of you who think a bard would be too lighthearted, I beg to differ. A melody can be somber. Dark Souls and Demon Souls gave much liberty in terms of play-styles...why not give even more!?

I'm not sure if it fits the setting. This certainly fits the technological era and may be able to be a great asset. I really doubt From will add this in Dark 2, though.

the musical arts tend to be the first things to go in times of war and darkness... maybe have an npc invade/ helper who does that, the last bard of anorlondo or something, who can do special stuff like chester. but when dropped his harp/string instrument functions like a crossbow due to a hidden mechanism...

No, they're not. Songs and ballads about stories of war or violent mythos used to be very common. (and are still common enough) Musical instruments have been used in some aspects on battlefields for hundreds of years.
Most of Dark Souls is not Middle-Eastern in style or culture. Sound and music are miraculous, sacred things in a lot of Middle-Eastern and Indian cultures, (for example 'om') so there actually is a precedent for magical sound in mythology.

A drum maybe, or a horn. Those were used to communicate orders in battle. Passive self buffs are cool, when not obscene.

Yes, but another thing I was thinking about is a troubadour or musician during the Dark Ages. Imagine how sad that must have been!

I believe the drum passive would be the Epic moral boost to the player big grin

I'm not sure what you mean by that. Will you please explain?
And just as another note, considering the technology, I think the Souls setting is actually closer (in most aspects) to the Renaissance than the Midieval Ages. The Dark Ages were before the Midieval Ages and used technology far inferior to what is common in Dark.

I hardly think that technological style should be a limit. I mean, it is a fantasy game. But quite honestly, in a world where you can have something as primitive as a club and a loincloth, or as advanced as the aavelyn and mechanisms from the Duke's Archives, matching up with a real world period of time is hardly prioritized. Granted, I am not saying we should put mechs and guns in DS2. lol
Just to bring another example into this, Skyrim COULD match up with the Dark Ages, but then you bring Steampunk Dwarves into it. That changes things.
I would agree with your statement if things were more consistent. For example, Dragon's Dogma. That is an example of a game that keeps things consistent technologically.
I hardly think that a drum, horn, pipe, or lute are out of the question when speaking about era. Simple versions of these instruments have all existed in some form or another since the earliest ages of true civilization.

Probably cultural, but snare drums always get me pumped.

I actually like this Idea! It would add a new aspect to the game. I just hope it takes much skill to complete. Maybe the songs could work where you have to finish the song to use the spell. Or maybe some songs could make you run fast while playing it, or some will make your enemies run! I just would want them to be non-volent.

I wasn't saying those instruments shouldn't be included because of the technological level. I was just pointing out your incorrect use of time period names. Horns, lutes pipes and so on are still used today.
The technology present in Dark is actually pretty consistent in terms of timeline. Note that soldiers aren't using clubs; the rare barbarians and tribal cultures do. Take a close look at the particular designs of many of the weapons; many of them are from the mid-to-late Renaissance or even Early Modern Period. (right before the rapid improvement of firearms) Dark Souls is a Renaissance setting with a lot of ancient relics, not an even mixture of Midieval Age, Dark Age and Renaissance aspects.

    so... i can has saxaphone?
like maybe an ancient relic from the dwarves (that thing in the concept art that wields a big axe) or something? if so all i would do is invade people and follow them around playing music. i'd need a tuba for fat people....

What are we all students of musical history? I really don't think we have enough knowledge to say oh that was an instrument from a different era. The happy musical stuff REALLY doesn't fit dark souls to me though. Its a Skyrim thing i think (speaking of which you should really be able to play instruments in that game). Also WDTPD that was exactly what i thought when i read the post and well done for getting the second post on this thread with that video.

I think it depends entirely on the music available and the instruments used. A harp or horn, yes. Bagpipes, chimes and didgeridoos, no. And on the historical note-go look at the instrument's page on wikipedia. I can find out about how long most instruments have been in use in a few minutes with the internet.

Y'know you shouldn't trust everything you read. Especially not on wikipedia.
