    The Valley of Defilement

Post by SlakeMoth on Fri Feb 24, 2012 7:02 am

Has there ever been a more horrible place in a video game than this? I don't think so. I played Demon's through nearly three times and can honestly say that once I'd cleared it I never went back, even though I didn't get all the pickups. Those malevolent giants, the mewling babies in the swamp, ugh! still give me the creeps. Compared to the Valley, Blighttown is a holiday camp. :affraid:

4-2 is easy, especially if you know a shortcut. Add me and I can lead you.

4-2 is rough i think, not exactly easy but the difficulty just lies with the annoying mantarays and the hundreds of arrows you need to kill them all..

Valley of defilement i found alright, not actually that bad i thought, just need some plague and poison moss and it's all cool, the bosses in there are pathetically easy too.

I hated all of 5, the swamp babies and their lore explanation being the creepiest thing ever, followed by the disgusting bugs of 3-2

i hated them black knights on 1-4, 1-5

    the red eye knights

seriously they were annoying as hell to me they just attack you until you died or ran out of stamina if you ended up running out of stamina they would heal

they have that cheap shield bash that takes out ALL of your stamina

    quite annoying i should say

Loved Valley, HATED Latria. It's beautifully designed but gets me still today. It's appropriately creepy, confusing and frustrating.

I thought latria was the most interesting world personally, had the best atmosphere, though the fools idol boss was interesting the maneaters seemed more like an easier version of gargoyles to me..

I just hate this valley. I don't like even the name. Poor Astraea

I finally convinced my friend to pick up Demon's souls the other day, so I was walking him through the areas. Is it just me or did they remove some of the enemies in 5-2? I thought there were 2 giant depraived on the first island at the start of the level.

Maybe its because I went into that level with pure black world tendency my first time, so I could get the blind. But I could have sworn there was always 2 regular giant depraived there and then 1 black phantom giant added at PDW.
Anyone else know this for sure?

Latria was my favorite level, so much atmosphere, so creepy I was on my toes through the whole thing loved it, wish they found a way to recreate it in Darksouls.. as they seemed to recreate most other levels.

There are two normal depraves at the start of the swamp area and at the first fog gate there is only 1 giant depraved one. At the second fog gate there are 2 giant depraved ones.

Equipping the regen shield and ring will allow you to ignore the poison effect and there are shortcuts in this level, too, to bypass a lot of the enemies.

Shortcuts are good after you've defeated the game for the first time and just want the boss' soul.

I think I had it concreted in my head that I hated world 5 before I even got to 5-2 swamp, that pushed it to absolute loathing.

I remember starting my game going through 5-1 and constantly getting pushed off ledges because of the main monsters basic attack, catching the plague from rats too small to hit, getting flattened by giant depraived (which the game just seems to love throwing at you in narrow passages or in areas you cannot roll. this sucks for a squishy melee character) I made a point of leaving all of world 5 for the last part of the game.

When I made it to 5-2 it was a whole other bucket of worms :/
World 5 was just not enjoyable.

For me the best worlds were 3 and 4. Because in what other game can you honestly scream "GOD DAMN ***-ing MANTARAYS!" or "God damn... ***-ing mantarays???!" (in the case of 4-3) in a completely serious tone?

I'm re-running demon souls to get the plat trophy...

Just recently finished 5-1. It wasn't nearly as bad the second time playing it. I remember hating world 5 in general the first time I played it. I like the garbage, cockroaches and maggots strewned throughout the level. Give it that not so fresh feeling...you can almost smell it silly

For me, the worst bit about the 5-2 swamp is constantly getting lost. Now, i just walk clockwise around the perimeter, because i know it eventually leads to a platform with a bunch of giant mozzies thats near a fog gate. If it wasn't for that...

I really like world 5, one of the most memorable levels I've ever played, and world 3 being one of the most creepy.
World 5 is the first world I go through on a new playthrough, then world 4. Those are the easiest worlds if you know your way through. Harsh environments, easy bosses.
I did a default temple knight (sl4) melee NG+ run before dark souls was released, and didn't die once in world 5 (apart from changing world tendency). In comparison, Flamelurker took me 2-3 days to beat.

I really like world 5 too. It definitely has its difficulties but I thought the atmosphere was masterfully done. I especially liked 5-3. The combination of the undead babies, the praying dregglings, the twisted holy element of Astraea, Stoic Garl Vinland sitting by the pile of his victims remains then the way he approaches you and then stops like a mechanical sentinel, all tied together by that eerie victorian music. I love it.

One of my favourite / most-hated moments in the Valley of Defilement? Creeping across the swamp in 5-2, nerves on edge, wondering what the hell I'd come across next... and then turning around to see a Black Phantom with a giant meat cleaver running towards me. I died.

But yeah, the Valley did an amazing job of putting across this atmosphere of decay, filth and corruption, helping to emphasise this notion that yep, the land is truly screwed and here you are right in the middle of it. The darkness, the rain, the final boss fight that makes you wonder "Man, am I doing the right thing here...?" A great area.
