Great Scythe help Empty Great Scythe help

    Post by sjackson12 Mon May 20, 2013 4:31 pm

    Hi

Had some questions about using this in duels. I have a build that was originally a sunbro, so it wasn't really planned to be how it is now. SL145-ish, ~40 vit/end/dex, 50 faith. I'm using sunlight blade which gives a pretty massive AR of about 840. I also have hornet and RTSR.

It seems like the strategy with this weapon is to stay farther away from your opponent because of its range. I'm wondering if there's any specific tactics you can suggest. I always two-hand, and I really like the running R1 (jumping diagonal slash) and the R2 (low slash). However I find it's a bit slow on recovery if I miss, leaving me pretty vulnerable. Also I'm not sure when is best to use the R1 (overhead slash).

Also is hornet ring worth it or should I try perhaps the wolf ring or something else. Since it's meant to be used more at range, perhaps there aren't as many times I would be going for backstabs anyway.

Anyway any suggestions welcome on strategy, or helpful videos. Thanks!

Use it unlocked and manually aim for them as they dodge.

If you have more than 56 poise or are low on hp, use the hornet, if you don't have 56 poise use the wolf ring.

Also, don't spam it. It will get you bs'd or parried. The regular r1 is very good at the edge of its range.

Tips on a Great Scythe? You called?

I alternate a lot between one and two hand uses. I rarely unlock or dead angle so someone can better explain that.

Regarding the R1 attack: It's a great attack to lock em up if you time it right. Essentially you're waiting for them to be low on stamina, make a mistake then open up. When you're hitting the hits come fast and hard with the R1

It's also good for corralling enemies. You can use it to make people dodge in ways that is to your advantage, just be careful since some dodges will negate this (like toward you) and you need to react quickly since a miss means you're stuck for a second.

The R2 is pretty self explanatory.

    Did you know:
-Hitting the circle button while standing still is a quick backstep (I bet you knew that). But did you know that the two handed R1 from this move is identical to the running two hand R1? So basically, step back juuuuuust outta their range and leap back well into your range
-The Great Scythe can sometimes hit around obstacles other weapons can't. Like a tree. I really made a spear guy angry once doing that. I call this the "squirrel maneuver"
-If someone tries to disengage but is still facing you, sprinting can be your friend. Particularly that running attack you like so much. Extra tip, run slightly to their side.....that's the one dead angling I consistently do.

Thanks for the info, still don't really understand the dead angling thing. Also do you use the running R1 when they are not running away as well, or is that too easy for them to see coming.

I love The great Scythe. turned mine into a Chaos GS and every playthrough the first thing i do is make a trek into the catacombs and retrieve it(after alot of deaths sometimes). The dead angling is amazing on it and the stun effect isnt that bad either when using Fire/Lightning reinforcement

Dead Angling is when you "bypass" someone's blocking attempt and your attack connects at full AR, thereby giving the illusion that you bypassed their attempt to block completely.

What is actually happening, is that the game reads your ability to block by whatever is attacking you "head-on".

So by exploiting this mechanic, you can attack someone, while slightly facing away from your opponent, and have your attack connect at full AR, even thought they are clearly aware, blocking, and facing you.

Weapons that have great dead angle potential are: The great Scythe, Claymore, or just about any large weapon that has a sweeping horizontal attack in its given skill set.

An example of a weapon that is hard to dead angle with would be a spear.

This is why the Great Scythe has such great DA potential. And again, in order to successfully dead angle your opponent, you cannot be facing them at the time you initiate your attack.

Also, keep in mind that in some cases, it can leave you open to backstabs, because you are slightly "giving them your back".

I'm pretty sure thats the overall explanation, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

    Quick note:

Almost every dead angle attempt you encounter will be aimed at your right side. The reason is that every character in Dark Souls is right handed. All attacks that can easily dead angle swing from left to right. All characters hold their shield in their left hand, leaving their right side vulnerable.

If you encounter an enemy repeatedly attempting to dead angle, just guard your right side. The only other way for them to dead angle is move their character slightly behind you to the left, to hit your back. Just unlock, pivot, bs, gg.

Also, since you're a drummer, I wouldn't apply for their opening
