    Sci-Fi or Steampunk?

    Post by Slarg232 on Sun Feb 10, 2013 12:39 am

    Hey all, I'm working on writing a book in the stylings of H.P. Lovecraft (How he uses short stories to build an over arching world), and I need help. I can't decide which fantasy option would be cooler, Sci Fi or Steampunk.
    So I figured I would ask you guys your thoughts through a poll. For Sci Fi, think Mass Effect/Halo/Killzone, and for Steampunk think Full Metal Alchemist, Warmachine, and the Piltover faction on LoL.

    Sci-fi = science fiction. Not space opera.

    You don't have to be like star wars to be science fiction.

    HP lovecraft is both science fiction and fantasy.

    Here, I'll give you one of the characters from each;
    Sci Fi: Earth has been blown up, Humanity was steralized, and much of our history was lost. Danny is a new "Reclaimer", or someone who goes to destroyed ships or lost uninhabited planets to find materials/old tech/knowledge. Despite him almost dying on his first mission, it granted him huge amounts of fame, and he is now dispatched to the one place that can give humanity the answers it seeks; Luna.
    Steampunk: Zuzami was a priest of an ancient order dedicated to He With Many Voices. One day, while making his pilgrimage, he was visited by She Who Speaks, telling of a land with the power of smoke, where giant golems roam the land, but of metal and not rock, and where every man can call fire from his hands. The ancient Diety spoke of a man, marked with his blessing, who would help return the world to it's natural state. Zuzami immediately returned to his monestary and prepared for the long journy ahead.

    Steampunk is a type of science fiction.

    What you describe as science fiction is space opera.

    I wouldn't really consider FMA 'steampunk', generally steampunk is a sort of post apocalyptic world, a lot of machinery but made pretty much out of scraps.

    However, as the poster above me said, why not do both? be original, create your own genre. Your work will be much more interesting if its got its own unique flavour.

    in answer to the original question, were you intending to mimic the dark tone of HP lovecraft. I would suggest a steampunk world over a space opera as others have put it, world. it is hard to build suspense and fear if you give too much power over to the main character. and in a sci fi setting they have much more power than in most of HP lovecrafts work.

    Steampunk has more limitations, sci-fi is as wide as classic fantasy.

    That's what I think. I'm a fan of both and a lot of the time they cross over. What would you call Dan Simmons' 'Hyperion' series for example?

    I think everyone means a mix when they say both. The way I see it, the two genres aren't mutually exclusive and can be written to compliment one another very well. Think steampunk style/inspired tech in a space like setting.
