Was the Demons Souls playerbase always this bad?

Post by Noob-of-Artorias on Fri Feb 08, 2013 7:08 pm

I've been attempting to PVP and I'm quickly finding that anybody left is either a tryhard who disconnects every time it looks like he's gonna lose, or a complete noob who's obviously duped Ephemeral Eyes.

Case and point, I tried for the first time to fight as the old monk today, and I got someone, He obviously looked well equipped for the fight (He had the Northern Regalia and the Dark Silver Shield) and as we began it looked like he might win....until my Rat Ring and Morion Blade kicked in, and I destroyed him....wouldn't you know it, right before I can get the message that I won and get my *** headwrap, he disconnects. I try again, and as luck would have it, I get the same guy, this time I just straight up massacre him, and once again he disconnects, I assume he didn't try again because I wasn't summoned again.

After that I began getting invasions in 3-2...and the guy I was fighting was a total pushover. All he did was turtle behind a shield occasionally firing off a soul ray until I got in a few backstabs and ended him....

This must have gone on for about 10 invasions...and by the end I was actually feeling so sorry for the guy I ran past him to try and kill some of the Gargoyles, but nope, as soon as I run past him he rolls to dodge me and falls off a bridge...

Was Demons Souls always like this? I mean yeah, you've got tryhards and noobs in Dark Souls as well, but I don't think it's ever been quite so polarizing.

No. It wasn't always like that. Last time I played I was getting a lot of decent PvP. Not nearly as much as DkS, but it was enough to keep me interested

Drop RSS/BSS/invade in 4-1 you'll find very good duelers there.

They might be new players in all fairness since it just came out on PSN. But yeah I think 4-1 is the competitive dual hotspot, at least it was back in the day.

Most of them would be new players from Dark Souls that transitioned to DeS and they use the same tactics as in DkS.

I never did PvP back when DeS came out but only until DkS but there were quite a handful of good players.

What makes sense to me is that the reason it feels so polarized is because Demon's Souls is no longer the most active Souls game. With most players who enjoyed the continuous PvP scene moving on to Dark Souls, the only ones left in Demon's Souls will be either the seriously dedicated veteran players or the complete newbies who picked it up after first trying Dark Souls to see what it was like. There won't be very many people who aren't either complete tryhards or completely inexperienced, because all the people currently engaged in the learning curve process are learning Dark Souls because that's where all the action is right now.

Well, i don't see how you can be upset about having to deal with some noobs, most people making their way through the game are new players now. If you want some actual PvP go to 4-1 and hope you run into some of the people who still do a fight club there. Message them, and see if they are summoning/hosting ext. If Demon's Souls had better hit detection and more weapon/armor variety i would prefer it to Dark Souls.

Mostly in PvP I find way more noobs than in Dark Souls, but I do notice when I go to the Shrine of Storms I tend to find the players rocking weird builds and killing me. So probably if you stick to the shrine you'll find the better players.

over the weekend, i invaded this player in 3-1. he looked to be AFk, just standing near the first archstone. so i proceeded to backstab them to death and went on my merry way.

a minute latter, this player starts sending me messages saying that i was ruining Demon's Souls and sending me pics of chunky poop in toilet bowls and a pic of a gangbanger pointing a 9mm, saying he was gonna find my ISP and what not. apparently i am their "new project".

yeah, i'd say that the player base in Demon's has devolved since last i played.

PvP hasn't bothered me, but I keep having issues with getting folks to coop. Anyone I summon leaves almost immediately. I'm not wearing anything stupid and am clearly trying to get through levels rather than gank or something so I'm not sure what the issue is. It's hard to believe there are this many people only trying to coop with a specific buddy or something.

First thing I noticed in Demon's Souls was how easy it was to get 1hkos vs people. Any decent weapon + weapon buff was almost guaranteed 1hko vs another phantom with a backstab. Curse weapon on a Dragon Bone smasher was usually a 1hko even without a back stab.

I liked invading people and ganking them while they were fighting mobs. I'd buff up a DBS+5 with curse weapon and do the running R1 attack, and they go flying + 1hko'd. In comes the rage mail :x.

The last time I played Demon's Souls I invaded and 3 people were fighting the human mobs near the entrance of 1-4, and I ganked them while they were fighting the mobs, and one of them got picked off by the spear+tower shield guy. Another time I'll invade and a couple guys are fighting the dragon at the top of the stairs, and I'll often kill at least 1 of them before they know I'm there.

I also had a mage, and my fireballs did about 1k, if you got less HP than that as a phantom, you're 1hkod. I've 1hko'd a bunch of people that 800ish HP as a phantom with just 1 fireball. Or firestorm was a 1hko no matter what attack, unless they got SC up. A really good way to cheese people was use that storm ruler sword, and knock them down, then firestorm on wake up, about 1/2 the time it seems to nail them.

Whenever I invade/get invaded in 4-1 with my one complete build, I have not faced anything but:

    A) A build exactly like mine. Dragon Bone Crusher, Cursed Weapon.
    B) A duel katanas build.

I always beat A, and lose to B.

Fighting vs dual katanas is hard with a DBS, definitely a bad match up. I like the DBS + curse weapon too but dual katanas give me problems. I'm a firm believer that the DBS is a good gank weapon vs an unsuspecting opponent, and not much for sword play. Its a 1hko stick.

Sword + Shield can beat them way easier though. Swap that DBS out for a Crushing Knight sword + Dark silver shield, and you can turn the tide on them. Blueblood sword users can own them too.

I've found a fare about of co-op in world 1 past the phalanx. Especially the area before the Penetrator.

I don't care about PvP at all, but I am now having fun helping new players to kill the Flamelurker or The Old Hero on lower levels. The bad thing is that coop starts to finish as soon as you start to level up. If you get to 70 or 75 you only have King Allant left to coop.
I do see al lot of new players since the psn release, and I am always ready for some coop sessions.

My experience with PvP has been:

4-1 @SL 125, organized duels are still decent. Quality of random duels in 4-1 is at an all-time low. Bad builds, bad players, and bad hate mail.

Outside of 4-1 SL 125, it mostly feels like people who came from Dark Souls. Lots of people going for circle BS's.
