Proposition: NPC Themed War Empty Proposition: NPC Themed War

Post by theGentleman Thu Feb 23, 2012 5:21 am

---(I started a thread in another section commenting about the status of the Burg and mentioned that invading as an NPC is a blast and asked why we hadn't had a war following this theme. I expected to get a lot of "we already did, it was yesterday" but instead I had a few positive bumps so now my ego is loose.)---

I propose an NPC themed war.
What I mean by this is rather than warring covenants, we choose a location or locations to invade each other/be invaded while identically equipped to one of the NPC's in the game.
-- Example: I invade as Ingward, I may only wear the Crimson Set and use the Tin Banishment Catalyst and Jagged Ghost Blade. (this set up is also very challenging as your offense is somewhat haphazard.)
*I may not invade wearing full Giants Set and Giants Halberd as there is no NPC who wears this set or uses that weapon.
*I may not invade in Havels Set and ninja flip, as I have never seen Havel do this.

Locations and dates would be very tentative.

If this seems like it would be fun, I would like to hear some ideas. I also would not object to handing the organizing of such an affair off to one of the interested senior members as I don't feel qualified to trail blaze such an event - others have more experience in such matters.

    Thanks for reading.
(Also, I am aware of Xanthous Week and don't intend for this to interfere with that as we are suggesting different ideas.)

This is a neat Idea, could have done without the thinly veiled complaints about playstyles you disagree with.

We get it, yet another post to add to the hundreds about how people don't like ninja flipping havels and giants armor. Some people care more about pvp min-maxing than you. Accept that people are going to continue to play their characters the way they want to.

I love the idea of a NPC war I would be down for it. If you think invading as Ingward would be hard think about invading as the priestess of the Way of White(can't remember her name) I made her mad before and it was laughable because she had no weapons just fists.

    He's not talkin about that.
He's just sayin that there's no NPC that wear giant's set and that Havel is not flippin like the ninja in the forest.

Sop raging man, calm down, I know you don't like others to say the truth about the build you might play (why would you take a stand if you didn't care ?) but there's no reason to talk about it in a thread that has nothing to do with it.

I would rather this not devolve into more arguing about the DWGR. Gol is correct, I wasn't attempting to judge any play style,I was clarifying that my idea of fun would be to remain as accurate to the NPC as possible - the only one who wears the DWGR would be Shiva's bodyguard.
Wearing Havels is fine, wearing the DWGR is fine but for the intents of this event doing both at the same time is not in the spirit of any NPC theme.

--- So, yeah. Pass it along. If anybody else wants to see this happen, we can establish times, dates, locations and guidelines during this thread and then make an announcement once everything is agreed upon.

I personally think setting a location and having the host drop a few prism stones at the known invasion spawning points and then the invader dropping a few more once they reach the host would be the easiest way to assess if you are participating right from the start.
Places like drained New Londo and butterfly forest with fewer invasions and one set spawn location would make this easiest.
Rise from the floor and see prism stones around you, you know this is a participating host - otherwise, standard random invasion rules apply.

im in. going to be either lautrec or the anor londo firekeper.

what if we just choose a gesture that we do to the spirit? it should be pretty easy to recognize the other if he/she is cosplaying

I'd personally love to do some boss themed ones, though Invasions as Iron golem could probably be better than a war..

In terms of NPC wars I'm really down for this would be really fun, but i think combat inept NPCs such as ingward and dusk should be steered away from in favour of NPCs like lautrec, Kirk and others.

I'm in, as I said in your original topic, I can currently cosplay as, Leeroy, Solaire, Nicko/Vincent, Kirk, or a Black Knight.

But I don't agree with that you can't cosplay as Giant. In my opinion you can cosplay as ANYTHING as long as it exists within the game. I can cosplay as a Hollow Undead Soldier if I want to for example, just Full hollow soldier set, Hollow Soldier Shield, and Long Sword. Take in mind this because there is a lot of people who also like to cosplay as mobs, ALWAYS within the game, you're not going to see a guy in full giants with queelag's sword and flipping lol, also giants can't flip, so mainly you can't flip unless your character you cosplay uses light/medium armor, or you cosplay as the ninja (who uses light armor anyway).

That way we have restrictions so we don't see people cosplaying as people using Heavy Armours flipping around. That would be balanced.

EDIT: And I agree with Serious_much, you can cosplay as anyone, but if you cosplay as Dusk, you are probably going to lose lol.

Proposition: NPC Themed War Empty Re: Proposition: NPC Themed War

Post by theGentleman Thu Feb 23, 2012 3:56 pm

    I was in a meeting all day and considered two things that I'd like to put forth;

    1) I think I will retract my comment about not choosing an enemy NPC theme, after deliberation, I see nothing wrong with dressing as a Giant or Silver Knight so long as you follow their gear setup.

    2) Would anybody want to change this concept from a 'war' to a 'free-for-all-tournament' ?
Such as, we establish a point system and update each other over the forum on the chosen date with our numbers.
I had in mind to reward difficulty of NPC chosen, a Black Knight would grant 1point per victory where as people like Dusk and Andre grant 3points per victory.
This doesn't punish anybody but provides incentive to dress as something besides a Black Knight with BKGA.
The whole attraction of the idea for me is all of us fighting with unusual limitations, how often do you get to test out Xanthous w/ his whip against a Balder Knight with Balder Side Sword?

If anybody is keen on the idea of a point system, tallied at the end of the night to declare a single winner (honors based, of course), let me know.
If so, we'll have to choose which themes get 1point and which get 3points.

    guidelines such as - - -
Theme: Laurentius of the Great Swamp
Equipment: Full Pyromancer Set, Cracked Round Shield, Hand Axe, Pyromancy Flame
Notes: May use Pyromancies, no rings granted
    - - - might be useful so that we are all on the same page.

    thanks for contributing, everybody

    *Bump*

How does the first weekend in March sound? Other events secheduled for that time?
Figure it gives people enough time to tailor a toon to the NPC they intend to emulate.
Once we get some ideas together, I will post a poll to see how many people would want to play under those guidelines/timeframes.

I like the idea. Better a free-for-all tournament so we fight between participants also.

now that i have decided to be lautrec i have some questions. 1, can you upgrade your weapons/armor and if so what upgrade paths can you choose? 2, what rings can you use, if you can use any at all. i understand the giant-DWG thing but there has to be some ring that are in-character like the ring of FaP for lautrec

Post by theGentleman Fri Feb 24, 2012 1:44 pm

I think sticking as true to the NPC will be the spirit of this event. It makes sense that rings which fit the theme should be used, FaP and protection for Lautrec make absolute sense to me. Havels Ring in Havels gear also makes sense, The Bellowing Dragon ring for anybody dressing up as Griggs of Vinheim makes sense.
I think the general rule of thumb is that if you see them use it or it can be found in their possesion, then it can't be argued against.

As far as the upgrade paths, "staying true to the theme" is where I am going again. It would be my preference that somebody playing as Lautrec really only follow the normal upgrade paths for his Shotels, but if all you have is a one regular and one lightening and can't get any more - I guess that will have to do.

I don't want to bog the whole thing down with technicalities, but the idea was to fight using things with which you normally don't fight - forcing us to learn and develop new tactics and skills. Necessity being the mother of invention.

How does everybody feel about the 2nd-4th of March? (I am trying to beat the release of ME3 so we can have maximum participation - as even I might sway towards that franchise, eventually)
Once we get a date I will make a fresh post with the guidelines and one of those 'Poll' features that seem to be popular. Hopefully a sticky, also. winking

i haven't upgraded my shotels at all so ill probably make them +14. about the "sticking to character", havel is a bishop, a bishop is in the church and the church in dark souls uses miracles so would it make sense for a havel cosplayer to use miracles even though he never uses them in-game? i am not going to be havel i just used that as an example.

I'm going to say that I disagree with the idea of Havel using miracles simply based on him refraining from using them in the dozens of times that I've had to BS him for 15mins.

havel only really has two miracles tied to him, the magic barriers. also for dusk could we use the same catalyst then have like smoughs hammer in the second rh slot?

also boss cosplay might work but just keep with their movement style (no flipping smough please, is just to weird) there'd be ornstein, iron golem, smough, gwyndolin, gwyn and... thats about it

oh! domnall, what weapons does he use? and the crestfallen merchant, siegmeire and vamos (dark wraith suit with pick axe) andre would be buff guy with caestus's, mildred and jeremiah and... big hat logan... so many npc's!

Post by theGentleman Fri Feb 24, 2012 3:08 pm

I am wholly against the Dusk + Hammer idea. If that sort of things happens then we are just dressed in a different set of armor and using our normal attacks - not actually role-playing.

I've been pondering the likes of Dusk and Anastasia. When I RP'd as Dusk in the burg, I used her as a pure caster (her spells plus the soul spear that grants 30 uses) - making her an extremely difficult build. Anastasia would sort of thematically fit with the Astora Straight Sword and maybe Crest Shield (as this was the choice of Oscar from the same region).
I think reasonable deduction is acceptable when it comes to some of the less detailed characters, Domnhall would have crystal weapons as he is the first to offer them in the game.

I've tried RP'ing as Vamos, using the Dark Armor with Royal Helm and the hammer he drops . . . it doesn't really get the point across, unfortunately.
Andre is a little easier as he has just some form of dark trousers and his dual Caestus'.

I think in general, if the character can have their attire fully adorned by the player then they are a valid choice and grounds for negotiating their weapons if they were unknown to us. Although I am sure somebody has attacked Domnhall at one point and can answer that question.

I'm personally going to be sticking with Ingward and Jeremiah, maybe summon two buddies and we all mill about like Hollowed Soldiers. lol

We can discuss the character based information once I make some kind of official announcement.
Enough people seem to be down for the idea, what I am looking for right now are the hard details - SL ranges, locations, dates, etc.

    As of now,
I know the regular hotspot is around 120, but I don't mind invading from a much lower level.
I suggested butterfly forest and drained new londo but the catacombs aren't frequently invaded and Lost Izalith is an option.
Nobody seems to be objecting to the first weekend in march.
Times would have to be pretty broad as I am on Pacific Standard and I know plenty are on the east coast and there are even some Kiwi's in the mix.
I'm a proponent of the host dropping Prism Stones in the area of the spawn point so that the invader doesn't have to hunt down the host only to find they are not participating and we just scared the hell out of them. Once in eye sight of each other it should be fairly obvious - usual gestures and courtesies apply.

Any ideas before I make attempts to turn this thing official?

If I had a decent faith build I would totally play as Sunlight Maggot Solaire. That would be epic. Anyone want to do that? I might play as him without his miracles, just using his set.
