The New Xbox
If you haven't heard already, the new Xbox will be always online and won't accept second hand disks. There's also a new Kinect, but who actually uses that? More info here. http://www.edge-online.com/news/the-next-xbox-always-online-no-second-hand-games-50gb-blu-ray-discs-and-new-kinect/

Re: The New Xbox
I won't even read the whole article. Just by reading the first sentence i know that i hate Microsoft for this decision:
''Microsoft’s next console will require an Internet connection in order to function''
That is usually what i defend about games. Not everyone has an internet connection, although it may be uncommon not to have one. And some people may bring it to places whenever they're on holiday etc. which may not have an internet access. If that is really the case, then i hate Microsoft more than ever.
I can't say i was looking forward to the new xbox to begin with. I never was a fan of xbox to be honest, and only bought it for Halo and Fable.
Imma have to reconsider with this one though.

Re: The New Xbox
I agree. I have several friends who do not own internet connetion, nor they want to, yet they all have Xbox 360 and some of them even had the first Xbox. It's not a nice move from Microsoft to reward their faithful customers with a new console that won't work for them.

Embarrassing. No offline? No second hand disks?
If the new playstation goes the same way it may be the end of me buying new games.

I don't. I can't care less about Xbox. Perhaps if I could play online for free on it, then I would consider returning to it.Forum Pirate wrote:Its a rumor. (i checked) Don't flip yet.

Steam box is an option. No second hand, but cheaper games and valve isn't satan. Not especially nice either, but they don't have crap on microsoft.Serious_Much wrote:Embarrassing. No offline? No second hand disks?

isnt that thing just a box for steam? I wouldn't get one of those, I don't like having games that you pay to download, unless they're old games that it's too much effort and money to buy on disk.
That reminds me, I need to get steam back and get morrowind back, and purchase fable and possibly farenheit

If you live in Europe you will be able to in the future.

bit-tech wrote:The ruling is not only a blow for Oracle, but a major change in the way digital distribution services as a whole can operate. Currently, it's not possible to resell software purchased from Steam, Origin, or other digital distribution platforms - but CURIA's ruling in the case means that Valve, EA et al will need to add that facility into their system in order to continue to offer the services in the EU. It also means that digital distribution is no longer a solution to the second-hand market, taking away one of the biggest reasons for publishers to support the system.

Re: The New Xbox
I'm so happy about that ruling
It was a total farce that companies try to stop resale of a game by putting it on digital format, and the unfair advantage of using digital medium has been taken from them. Glad to see the only thing promoting it now is not having to make discs and distribute them

Which could cut prices, but I'll pay the extra $10-15 for hard copies given the option. (no such ruling in america. We pay for a liscense, which they can revoke at any time for no reason.)

Re: The New Xbox
If the rumours are true, I'm dusting off my Ps3, and going back to PSN. Microsoft has earned even more of my hatred. The only reason I still have an Xbox 360 is because I won one in 2006, and still have it. My Ps3 has nearly no games, which will definately change, if there is no second hand disks allowed. Nearly all of my games are second hand.

I agree on the hard games though, I'd much prefer having disks and paying more money for them (though admittedly most of the time i don't play new games)

Re: The New Xbox
I don't like that ruling, Digital Distribution is the future, and that ruling only makes a harder transition for companies because it means is not as profitable as it would be otherwise.
I like the ability to lend games to my friends, and I'm also against online pass codes, but I also think that Digital Distribution is a necessary step for the evolution of gaming, with that Cloud Gaming will finally rise, all that will reduce the barriers and money people have to go through/spend to be able to game. The gaming market will grow even more.
I don't care for having a physical copy of the game, I just care for having the game, digital gaming will reduce the costs of production because no physical copies will be made, thus games will be cheaper and available to more and more people, thus invalidating the point of "I can't lend my games", because they will be way more cheaper and anyone will be able to afford them. If you can't afford them, then I'm sorry, but this is also a business, and people need to get paid to continue with their projects, this will not only make games cheaper because game production will be cheaper, but also will make it easier for small companies to start making games, and distributing them to a bigger audience, as everyone will be part of the digital market, instead of how is now that indie studios make downloadable-only games that you can't see in stores and such many people don't ever know about them.
The cheaper and easier we make to buy, make and distribute games, the better for everyone.

What's happened is that digital companies got greedy with monopolizing it and basically got slapped. Instead of enticing players with exclusive real world/digital goods or beta play for paying early, they chose this lazy and greedy root. Locked off content, online passes, day one DLC, it's their own fault for fragmenting content in the first place and I can't wait to sell stuff I no longer use (especially online passes). Let's hope that other developers, publishers use a honest way to tunnel revenue so they don't lose out to digital resale.

Re: The New Xbox
So? I bought my car, so I can do whatever I want with it because its mine. The company has no say.
Thats how it should be with games. Format is irrelevant. I bought it, its mine to do whatever with, so long as I'm not violating copyright laws.
It is not my privilege to play their game, it is their privilege to be considered worth spending money on. If I'm not allowed to resel, loan, or violate the game I'm paying for, they lose that privilege and my money. I'll read.

And If instead of selling you games, they decide to rent them to you for oh, idk... 25 years? You can't own a rental.
Or they could simply raise the price of the first sale in order to cover any potential loses. Hell the same could be said for discs. A 60 dollar game could very well become a 80 dollar game.
For some reason, I don't think the gaming industry is just going stand idly by.
I also wonder if this applies to any DLC? Technically, we purchase that too.

Yeah, if this does indeed seem to be true, I'm hoping Sony doesn't follow that same route.
I'll definitely be sticking to a Wii-U if that is the case.

Re: The New Xbox
Agreed with Chiz 100%. I used to buy used games till I found out that the money doesn't goes to the developers but to Gamestop only. No wonder why they promote used games so much with the rewards card and used games offers. I just wait till the game gets a price drop and buy it new. Last time I did that with XCOM for $40. Soon maybe I'll buy FFXIII-2 for $20 new. The difference between new and used is like $5 anyway. Only way I'll buy it used is if there aren't new copies in store (like MSG4).
