Need tactical advice - DLC Boss Empty Need tactical advice - DLC Boss

Post by Zephryl Tue Jan 29, 2013 9:41 am

Okay, I need some tactical advice against Knight Artorias. No matter what I do, I can't get the bastard below about 1/4 HP. He always managed to kill me right near that point, since he either does that leaping attack that hits me whether I block or dodge (And one shots me if he's got enough Abyss Juice going), or he does three of the Vertical Flip attacks and I only expect 2, or I miss the dodge of the third...

Eugh, this is a frustratingly difficult fight... Is there a specific Element or a type of Pyromancy that does big damage to him? Or is there a a shield/armor that reduces his Abyss-Damage?

No Online, so getting help from someone else isn't an option~ Gotta tough it out myself.

Trying to find that Stats program thing, so I can put my build into it if it helps~ I'll edit this post when I find it.

Roll from his attacks just as they're about to hit you. It has to very close, but it's the safest way to evade, especially his leaping attacks.

He devastates most medium Shields quickly. You can use Balder Shield, it has 74 Stability I think. Highest of all Medium Shields.
You'll need either a Greatshield, or keep using Sheild buffs to block him effectively. But if he pulls out his Abyss boost, you're screwed unless you block with Strong Magic Shield.

Wait for his slower attacks like his long stab, leaping and lunging horizontal sweep and attack him after he misses you with them, or you block them. Other than that, always block and keep going away from him in huge circles, so you don't hit a wall. Be patient.

When he rolls away from you follow him, if he rolls one more time, twohand your weapon and run straight at him. He's gonna use his Abyss boost. Don't let him. Mash him until you stagger him and cancel his boosting. If you're using Dex weapons, that don't do much Poise damage, use Pyromancies instead.

    I hope it helps.
    Good luck.

He's extremely resistant to all elemental damage types, so try a pure physical weapon (+14/15) even if you have no scaling stats. Only attack him once before you retreat, if you get greedy he'll punish. Always expect 3 flip attacks in a row, so you only attack him after the third flip.

Exactly that. Each time I expect less than 3 flip attacks, I just die...
I attack once and retreat too, and even this way, if your weapon is slow, the timing is tricky. The safest moment too stike is just after his long jump attack or his dashing/piercing attack, when his recovery animation seems to be the longest.

I have to fight him lot on my characters to get armor I want. Here's a few tips.

Get a fast weapon with long range. A spear would be preferable, but something like a claymore would also work. As you fight him, only focus on hitting him once per opening, don't get greedy and be patient.

Make sure you have 20 estus too. No matter how I fight him, I usually end up using all of them.

The easiest way to fight him would be to have a good greatshield with +75 stability. I remember the easiest time I had with him was with an artorias shield and a strong spear. I had enough stability and stamina to block all of his hits, while being able to poke him when I thought it was safe enough.

If you can't manage that, then just go for <25% equipment weight and the ninja ring and dodge. I had an easier time with minimal defense from light armor than moderate amount of defense with <50% roll.

    DON'T USE ELEMENTAL DAMAGE.

Also, never let him do that abyss power up. It takes about 3 hits to stun him and stop it, but if he does it he gets faster and stronger than ever. You might as well die at that point.

    ... ... ... I... I can stop his Juicing up? Dear lord, I had no idea X_X

Well then~ That should help, he's not much of a problem when he's regular!mode, since I can easily block all his stuff with my stamina, or even if I whiff a dodge it's 90% of my HP on his harder attacks, which heals up fast~

I'll give it another shot tomorrow then, see if my BKH hits fast and hard enough to stagger him while he's charging.

Since nobody has pointed it out, I'll just go ahead and say it.

You can interrupt Artorias' power up by shooting him in the head with a bow. Oh and by the way, whenever Artorias rolls two or more times in a rapid succession, it usually means he's going to use his power up.

Also, might I add that it's in fights like these where spears and the Leo Ring really shine. Well, both spears and the Leo Ring are incredibly beast in PvP too but you get the point. Getting an R2 counter with any spear isn't that hard against Artorias. Simply roll and attack.

Some of the things said in this thread are helpful, but when it was said that you will most likely need a greatshield, I must say I disagree. I killed Artorias first time at sl55, with my Black Knight Shield (+0) and Silver Knight Spear (+5) by rolling out of his attacks which are easy enough to avoid, and blocking things with a wide radius, such as his attack where he throws black stuff at you. Point being, if you are evasive enough, you can roll out of Artorias' attacks, and then you can punish Artorias with your spear, and get about 2 hits, and roll away, but block necessary things. I still recommend knocking Artorias out of his power up, as it made the fight much easier for me.

A word of advice for using shields (or really just blocking in general) - Arty likes to hit 2+ times with most of his attacks. Try to not keep your shield up all the time, and just bring it up before he swings, so that you get afew small windows of recuperation.

It might not sound like much, but if you just hold down block through his entire combos he'll easily eat your entire stamina bar and possibly get a hit on your with his following attack. Having a stamina booster like Child Mask or Cloranthy ring helps too.

(This strategy's true for all instances of using the shield tbh, but I did find it more prominent against Arty).

If not been covered, don't let 'em power up. Interrupt him. Pretty much an essential part of me winning alone.

Well at the moment I'm quite happy with my +10 Hollow Soldier Shield, had it for a long time and it hasn't let me down yet~

Thankyou all for the advice, a lot of handy hints! Hopefully when I try to take him down next time, he'll actually die instead of me haha~

Well knowing I could interrupt his Juicing up made all the difference~ Was a good boost to Morale, as well as my battle tactic~

Mr Artorias went down in a single attempt this time~ And knowing now that you have to dodge rather late to avoid his attacks... that helped too~ Dodged a lot of attacks I normally would've blocked, letting me get a couple extra hits in.

Thanks so much for the support! This fight was frustrating me to no end, haha~
