Guide to Grief Empty Guide to Grief

Post by LunarFog Tue Jan 08, 2013 10:54 pm

    FOREWORDS
In my opinion there's two different types of "griefing". The more popular form of griefing where your main objective is to just kill the host as quickly as possible, and then there's my form where the goal is to have fun. Obviously, if you want to normally grief, all you need to do is get full Heavy Armor and a chaos weapon and you're finished.

If you want to have some fun with it however, then you have to think creatively, and causing grief that way is what I specialize in.
This will be a guide on how to grief with every type of character in every area. New ideas are always welcome. This "Guide" will basically be a list of ideas you could possibly perform to try and cause some grief. Most of these probably won't be effective, which is why I always suggest to have at least one reliable damage-dealing weapon on you at all times and maxed-level armor.

The sections about magic and weapons will be pretty boring since the ideas aren't very clever and it's nothing you couldn't think of, but the maps section might give you a few new ideas.

    SECTION ONE: MAGIC

    Sorceries
Hidden Weapon - It turns your weapon completely invisible. Highly effective and annoying when you're weapon is a ludicrously long spear or halberd.

Chameleon - Great for waiting for an ambush. Wait until they pass you and then ambush them with a backstab or until they're fighting another enemy.

Or, if you have the patience, you can try and transform into an item and stand in places you shouldn't stand and see how long it takes for the host to notice you.

Aural Decoy - Follow them while keeping out of sigh and every now and then use this spell to make a noise. Let them know you're watching them, but from where? You can even fight them and beat them to NEAR death before hiding so they KNOW how dangerous you are.

Dark Fog - It's a cloud that poisons. It probably isn't that intimidating, but poisoning someone is always a great start to stressing the host out.

    PYROMANCIES

Poison Cloud/Toxin Cloud - It's hard to hit anyone with either of these spells, and more often than not I use them to create a barrier to buy me some time if I need breathing room. Poison/Toxin is a great way to pressure someone. Once they're inflicted, all you have to do is keep close to them and punish them for healing long enough for them to drop dead from the plague(poison/toxin).

Acid Surge - This rarely hits anyone, but if they do stay in the cloud, their armor and weapons could potentially break. WIth their main equipment broken and useless, you could stay back and choose to let the monsters or boss handle the host if you want.

    Miracles
Force - Lure someone to a ledge and then spam it until they fall. You could also just spam it just for the hell of it when they're nowhere near a cliff to fall off of. It's up to you.

Emite Force - Force at a distance. Try to free-aim the spell and use it around ledges.

Karmic Justice - Get a shield with less than 100% physical damage block, and bait the host into swiping at your shield with their weapon and you'll explode all over them without even having to attack. Sure you'll take damage, but they probably won't be expecting you to explode out of nowhere since karmic justice is so rare.

    ITEMS

Any dropped item - drop any item on the ground and wait for the host to pick it up. Keep hidden with a dragon slayer bow and you could blast them off an edge. Or you could backstab them while they're picking it up.

Prism Stone - Try making a trail and/or a giant sparkling area where you want the host to go. You could either set them up for a backstab from a hidden location, or get them to stand where you could easily knock them off the map with a dragon slayer bow. Dropping an item at the end of the trail would maximize the chance of this...comically cliche trap to work. It'll be hard to get enough time to both set it up and hide, but you could always try. Yes, some people will be stupid enough to fall for it just because it's human nature to follow paths and want to get strange items, and because it's so rare to see.

Or you could just make a pattern on the ground. It's practically graffiti-ing in their world.

Firebombs/Black Firebombs/Throwing knives - Battle plan: Throw crap at them til they die. Get them to a decently low amount of health and then just see if you could finish them off by throwing garbage.

Poison knives/Dungbombs - spam these and try to cause Plague. Plague does 10 damager per second, which might not seem alot, but adds up quickly. Once they're plagued, just stay on their *** and pressure them by punishing them when they heal. Stay defensive and patient and they'll eventually die after 5-10 minutes.

Lloyd's Talisman - Use this with anything else so they can't heal. This one isn't that complicated.

    WEAPONS

Same weapon switch - Invade someone on a really low level with two of the same weapon on your right hand. One should be level 1, maybe broken, the other should be a maxed out chaos/lightning/level 15 version. Play around with the host doing 20 or less damage and even backstab fish a few times and do 70 damage to prove that you're harmless. Then after 5 or 10 minutes, when they're sure of their victory and wasted a lot of their time and items, switch to your dangerous weapon and wreck them before they know what happened. If they're new, you could even mess with their minds and use a pine resin on it so they'll think that the buff is WAY stronger than it actually is.

Weapons in general - Now that I think of it, I don't really know much about weapons outside of spears. Just find one that has a nifty heavy attack(From the Abyss swords front flip to the ghost blades serial killer stab) and go wild.

Dragonslayer/Gough's greatbow - This one should be obvious. Camp in a place with lots of narrow ledges with a fog ring, and then shoot the hosts of the edge.

High Stability Shields: Follow the host unnoticed, and wait until he goes into a room with a small doorway. Hold the shield with both hands and block the doorway to keep him trapped in there for as long as you can.

    AREAS

UPPER UNDEAD BURG BEFORE TAURUS DEMON Recommended SL:1-15
The Undead Burg has countless places to hide and run to and a lot of mobs to cover your back. That, coupled with the fact you're dealing with someone who literally just started the game(mostly) makes it a good place to invade.

Try to lead the host to the area where the undead merchant is. Roll around and try to trick the host into attacking him until you see his outline start attacking. Once the undead merchant is attacking the host, go into the doorway and block it so he can't get out. He'll either be forced to die, or kill the valuable merchant. If the host does kill him, make sure to attack him immediately so he doesn't have time to pick up the Katana the merchant drops.

    UNDEAD PARISH Recommended SL: 10-25

what about beating them to near death then chainstabbing them to death with your fists?

i did that once on the xbox when i ran into either gankers or 2 questers being annoying with the divineblessings and estus flasks... the hatemail was pretty bad.

i didnt actually kill the host tho he dc'd after the 4th or 5th punch.

That's there fault for wasting their blessings! Though funny how that the host disconnect. I don't know if this counts but yesterday in the forest I had to die to get out since some invader found it funny to jump and backtrace to the entrance, trapping me there with invaders. Now I want to see how this kind of grief works. Still not doing it but I can voice my coldest side a little.

Equip as many poison clouds as you can and lob them from a distance by free shooting them into the air, it actually has a huge range.

I like beating someone to death with an unupgraded weapon I dont have enough dex to weild. Use poison resin and whack them repeatedly

Throw firebombs and dung pies untargeted from afar, you can be accurate enough

Cast iron flesh and just stand in a doorway for as long as you can

Does ironflesh stack with Havel's R2 buff?
If so, stacking them with Greatshield of Artorias and Strong Magic Shield would be beast.

Using environment to kill hosts (or just to mess with them) always cracks me up. I haven't tried any of these myself, but I've seen others pull them off:

Pulling the switches to the bridges in the Catacombs (thanks Patches).

Turning the boulder thing in Sen's Fortress when the host is visiting Big Hat Logan.

Jumping in the Sen's Fortress elevator cage and gesturing to the host as he passes you going the other way (this one is more effectively done by a host trolling an invader, since the host could just head to the boss fog instead of following you).

Turning the rotating walkways in the Duke's Archives. If you're good, you can knock the host off the end with Force while it's turning.

Also, setting any unlocked shortcuts back to their original state, like in the Undead Parish, Painted World, etc.
