Personally I go for the moveset that I like the most. I find it the most fun and when I master it, I can generally get more damage out of it than the most damaging weapon I can use at the time.

How do people pick their weapons?
How do you decide on your weapon of choice?

It depends on the moveset of the weapon. I normally get used to a weapons moveset in PVE and start testing it out in PVP until I can properly use it against other players.

I love having 4 weapons at once that can compliment each other's movesets so yeah. Individually, there are many movesets i love but i just couldn't get the hang of it until i started quadruple-wielding. =X

Movesets and looks - I wouldn't use a weapon unless I looked cool doing so.

ALWAYS look at the move set first. Finding a weapon you are good with and connect to will shine in battle, and through hard times and bad with that weapon you will grow to appreciate its unique qualities. And with practice the damage output will simply follow.

I always plan out my character beforehand (stats, looks and weapons). So I pick one that really looks good with the character or theme that I'm going for. Too me a while to effectively use f.e. the Greataxe, but it always works out in the end. Ofcourse, all my characters are mostly PvE and used for co-op. I don't know how well it will always work if I fought off an invader 1v1

What do you even mean? Your poll doesn't even begin to cover the number of reasons to pick a weapon.
An easy example is the spear. Spears don't have good movesets or damage, but they're fast and very long range so they see a lot of use.
The zwihander has a great moveset and damage, but the heavy investment means I rarely use it and never at sl 100.
The longsword has an incredible moveset, but very little damage and short reach so that doesn't see much use either.

While you pose great and interesting points, i must disagree for the longsword. It definately as a very good and very versatile move set, and i found the damage rate and range to be pretty good if used correctly. However i did roleplay as an elite knight for about 100 hours in the kiln, so that might have something to do with it...lol

The longsword or broadsword is a beauty in the off-hand.

Re: How do people pick their weapons?
I always test the moveset. I like it then its done. Of course, if the weapon is cool i just run to use it. But this works at inverse too. For example, i hate the titanite demon halberd moveset (exceptin that air smash) but love how it looks.

Can I choose 1 and 2? I love damage but the moveset matters to me too, I like to dish out combos and a good moveset gives me that ability.

Re: How do people pick their weapons?
It varies. I prefer to learn at least four weapons that help with what the other is lacking. Generally i Use the S.Knight Sword, Claymore, Scimitar and S.Knight Spear, but i'm starting to learn how to use Velka's Rapier.

Moveset for me. Good moveset is more important than power.

Re: How do people pick their weapons?
I like to think of this way. Two players fight, one has a rapier, one has the demon great axe. Which one will win? Most of the time the rapier user, and thats without back stabs. Damage means nothing if your too sluggish to cause any. Very interesting post i must say, thank you for allowing to to discuss such a topic

Re: How do people pick their weapons?
Moveset. If I can reliably hit with a weapon, and avoid being damaged with it, then I upgrade it as far as I can in a way that matches my build. That way I deal more damage and take less.
Sometimes it is a balance of auxilary effects and moveset too, but it is really about which weapon you can actually use, versus which one hits the hardest. If everything is dodging the most damaging weapon in the game, I'm not going to use it, since I can't hit with it.

I agree, its more like a ratio effect. Damage dealt:Damage taken. Excellent point

Whether or not i've used the weapon yet, this is a problem because i have now used every weapon in the game and have no idea what to do next.

Moveset and compatibility. That's why the Painting Guardian Sword and off-hand Notched whip, with backup Silver Knight Spear, is my favorite combo!

Re: How do people pick their weapons?
Usually what fits the most with my current playstyle, for example, my main character is a mix of assassin/blademaster, so I tend to dual-wield weapons with him, like bandit knives, PGS, scimitars, all the cool looking good stuff, but sometimes I also like to wield an katana two-handed, just for a change of pace.

Re: How do people pick their weapons?
Moveset/aesthetics/bada$$ factor...all very important to me. However, so is damage. You can smack someone twenty thousand times with a stick shaped like Cindy Crawford's legs, but you won't kill anyone with it. Awwww screw it. If I had a stick shaped like her legs I'd never put it down, who am I kiddin?

Re: How do people pick their weapons?
My favourite weapon is the titanite Catch Pole. It's slow, it's unwieldy, it cost me many fights against invaders, but I got it from the first titanite Demon on my first playthrough. I have a connection to it. Hell, I wrote the wiki page for it! And I regret every day that I swapped it out for a winged spear and specced my guy out for faith just because I thought it might get me a little further in the game. Some day, I shall construct a build around the titanite Catch Pole. It will be nigh-useless, but I'll get to use my beautiful baby once more...
Long story short, I've never really thought about it.

I love the titanite Catch Pole. I was dueling with it earlier with a bunch of random weapons in my offhand to complement it. The R2 was actually useful to catch people offguard, and no one successfully parried it.
