    O & S Boss question Empty O & S Boss question

Post by Zephryl Thu Jan 17, 2013 4:20 am

So I'm up to the Ornstein and Smough boss fight, and I had a couple questions about it.

Firstly; I've been using my BKH +5 for this fight so far, and haven't managed to kill them both... Would I have more luck with my Furysword +4? I'm unable to do a test run with it at the moment, while my controller recharges, so I figured I'd see if anyone knew their resistances while I ask my second question.

Which, naturally, brings us to question two...

If you kill Ornstein first, Smough crushes him to absorb his Soul, meaning you can't purchase his armor later. However, if you kill Smough first, Ornstein just lays his hand on his corpse to absorb the soul... Is there any reason you can't purchase his armor later, or is it just to keep it "fair"?

You can buy Ornstein's armour from the merchant near the stairs towards undead burg from firelink shrine (where you first see enemies including the firebomber up the top). You just have to kill Smough first. You can purchase both their armour sets, it's just the merchant will only sell one set and that depends on who you killed last. I hope that answers your question but I feel like you're asking "why can't you have both sets available in the one playthrough".

As for killing them, both those weapons would be ok but i'd probably go with the BKH as i'm guessing it would be doing more damage.

If fighting them both is too difficult for you there's always Solaire and coop, which is the most I use since I suck at PvE. However if you still want to defeat them solo for personal accomplishment then go for it and good luck. For the resistances I know they have high lightning defense, but your halberd should be able to deal more damage than the furysword. If you defeat big O you get his armor and the Leo Ring and if you defeat big S you get his fat armor.

Yeah, I meant "Why can't you get both in one playthrough". The first time I killed Orn first, and his corpse was crushed by Smough, so it makes sense that whats-his-name can't scavenge it to sell, or whatever he does to get it. I was just wondering if there's a reason, asides from making it fair, why you couldn't get both if you killed Smough first, since Ornstein just seems to absorb his soul without damaging him.

I considered using the Summon (Online isn't an option for me ATM), but I decided I didn't want to waste a Humanity for the attempt, since there's no guarantee I'd be able to do it even with help.

I'm probably doing it the harder way too, since I want to kill Steroidstein for his Soul and so I can buy his Armor. I keep getting stabbed through Smough's body, which was hilarious the first time but has rapidly become irritating.

Actually, a third question. How do you pronounce "Smough"?

It's pronounced 'Smo'. Not Smoff silly

Also Solaire is pretty useful with O+S. Heck, anyone is. The only hard part of the whole thing is having them both circling around you constantly, so if you have someone there to distract one of them then it's a piece of cake. Having said that, I find it so much easier fighting Super Smough instead of Super Ornstein.

Yeah, the circling is annoying. I can kill Smough fairly regularly if I can see both of them at once, but they enjoy herding me into a corner... I think I should be alright if I can get to Super-O a few more times, get a bit of practice dodge/blocking his new moves.

Found a shortcut to get to his room faster on my last attempt, so failing is a lot less frustrating now~

Edit: Also, both of those pronunciations weren't even on the short-list of possibilities I'd made, haha.

The furysword would be good for getting a lot of hits in quickly, but if you're having trouble with the fight then I'd recommend you go with the halberd. It'll do more damage per hit, and that's what you'll want to be doing: get 1 hit in here and there, when it's safe. Don't get greedy! Just hit once and get out, wait for your next opportunity.

How fast are you moving, fat roll, medium roll, or fast roll?

Also have you found the Crystal Halberd? It is near to the start of Anor Londo, I can't remember if it will out damage the Halberd or not but it is definitely a useful weapon if you find yourself dealing too little of damage. Plus with the stats to wield the BK Halberd, you should have a bit of scaling with the Crystal Halberd.

Medium Roll~ Can't stand the Fat Roll, but I make too many screw ups to drop down to Fast.

I have~ I should be able to try again in 10-15 mins, so I'll compare it with my BKH, not sure it'll stack up since my BKH is upgraded, but worth a look for sure.

And yeah~ Gonna stick with the BKH I think~ Furysword is neat, but I'll leave it for enemies I'm not struggling so much with

With the minimum stats you could have based on the BK Halberd, even at max upgrade you'll deal more damage with the BK Halberd+5. The Crystal Halberd will be a bit faster is all, but I think you should just ignore my suggestion since I turned out to be wrong.

Well there is a easy way to beat them. Its kind of cheap but it works. You will need a bow to do it. How it works is beat orn first. After you beat orn you can use the pillars in the boss room to your advantage. Get smough on one side of a pillar and stand far enough back on the other side so he cant hit you through or over it. He will charge the pillar and swing over and over before he finaly tries to walk arround. While hes doing this zoom in and shoot with your bow. He will eventually try to walk arround. When he does this just circle the pillar and he will go into charge mode again. When he does this just shoot him like before. It takes a bit of practice, and it is pretty cheap, but it works.

    Hi,

it depends a little bit on your Stats (Dex, or Str. Build)...but in most cases QFS is way better than BKH for Ernie&Bert.

    Reasons:
    1. while you can sneak in only one hit with the BKH you sneak in two hits with QFS in the same time - this thing is crazy fast and got a huge hitbox for a curved sword
    2. QFS got a way better Scaling (esp. for dex builds)
    3. QFS got a third scaling stat -> Humanity
    4. all four bosses (Ernie, Bert, Super Ernie, Super Bert) are weak to fire
    5. QFS is light, you can go inside fastrolling

Even with QFS+4 and 0 humanity i would take QFS....or no, i fought them more than 100 times, QFS is too cheap for them, makes it too easy to slay 'em down.
If you buff your BKH with fire, then BKH could be as good as QFS...but still QFS is much faster. Take R1 attack with QFS to deal more damage in the same time with R1, than with R2.

From the stats QFS deals nearly the same damage as BKH (depends on your stats), downside is split damage from QFS (fire and phys has to go through def stats of enemy) - have a look for yourself:
    http://darksouls.wikidot.com/black-knight-halberd
    http://darksouls.wikidot.com/quelaag-s-furysword

    Some tips:
Make Smough first, to get the Ring (and Super Ornstein is harder than Super Smough - keep the easy part for NG+). If you urgently want Smoughs Armor, then do Ornstein first.
Learn to time your rolling - you don't need a shield, go 2-handed (although it's easier with a shield, Silver Knight Shield +5 is fine).
Alway keep near their testicle, Smough never hits you there and it's easier to roll out Ornsteins attacks. Only for buttslam you have to roll out (2x when Super Ornstein does it).
Try to lure Smough away in the first part and get a pillar between you and Ornstein.

Managed to take them down finally =D Only took a few more tries, but learning I was able to block Smough's uppercut helped a lot~ I had always tried rolling before, which got me skewered by Orn half the time.

Thanks for the tips Walter, I'm a STR build though so I think with my more timid playstyle that BKH edged out in the end anyway~ I do need to improve my rolling though, I might go shieldless in NG+...

Surprisingly SteroidStein was actually pretty easy, once I was a bit more clearheaded. And when I stopped trying to block his Lightning-stab and started dodging it instead... That certainly helped~

So, now I have one last question~ I'm meant to give the Lordvessel to the Serpent guy in Firelink, will this make any areas/NPCs/loot/etc unavailable to me? I don't mind missing out on stuff because I don't find it, but I hate missing out on stuff because advancing the plot locks me out of it...

You wont be able to get dark wraith armor or the dark sword If you do. If you go to the wiki and look up darkwraith cov it will tell you how to do it without upsetting frampt.

Ah~ Well, I'm already part of the Cov I want to be part of, so I might keep that one until NG+~ I guess if that's the only thing, I'll give Frampt the Lordvessel tomorrow.

Well I'll probably spend some time upgrading my Pyro Glove, now that I can warp down to the trainer instead of walking, so people have a while to chime in if there's extras~

I don't imagine there will be though, Asides from when you murder NPCs there doesn't seem to be many things to limit you in the game

Smough is weak to Fire. Ornstein is WEAK to Solaire.
Killing Ornstein first then going after Fatty with Fury Sword is an Idea.
Killing Smough first and Letting Solaire tank Ornstein while you distract him is also an Idea.

Just a note, why the hell would anyone think that electrosmough is harder than ornstein?

Ornstein is very easily dodged if you stay close to him, and try to circle, and if he does the *** slam, you can just roll back a few times, he becomes slow, doesn't teleport as much, and most of his attacks telegraph a lot.
While Smough can charge you, hits anywhere in his melee range, can jump, has faster attacks than super Ornstein, and his butt makes like 2 or 3 times more lightning

Which covenant are you in OP?

If you go and kill four kings without talking to Frampt in firelink shrine then you can join Darkwraith covenant which is probably the most fun covenant in the whole game.

Yeah it is. Just got in a few days ago and have been having a lot of fun in Anor Londo. Being such a low level, SL 15, I get to invade non stop.

    Jolly co-operation ftw.

But I actually found the furysword extremely effective in the O&S boss fight, I was using a spear before and getting hit by everything. Then swapped to furysword and dodged almost everything while doing way more damage.
