not another skyrim... Empty not another skyrim...

Post by Cepzeu Mon Jan 14, 2013 4:07 am

Hi all, i'm new to the forums, so please don't have a rage if this is in the wrong place or something... so without further ado let me tell you a little story...(trust me this is ds 2 related)

It was a windy spring afternoon during the year of 2011, I had just been out shopping with my family and we were heading home, we had just one more stop in the local mall to buy some fresh bread or something, i cant remember. (now that i think about it while i write this, my left shift only sometimes works, and i am too lazy to press the right one, so please excuse any gramma errors0. happy
Anyways, i was standing in the magazine isle, searching for the next issue of official xbox magazine australia and new zealand, i found it. we had finished shopping and were heading home, i was eagerly awaiting the moment when i could lie in my bed, look out the window at the miserable weather, bite my fingernails, and read the new issue, containing a small 3 page preview for skyrim. I was so excited about it, the elder scrolls series was one of my favourites then. i skipped most of the other information, barely glancing at the pictures of a robot, soldier, giant rat, motorbike etc. i finally got to it, the elder scrolls 5 skyrim.

    a few days later...

I had decided to preorder skyrim at eb games (worst place ever, skyrim cost 128 NZD to preorder while it only cost 98 nzD at jb hifi) but i was too excited to shop around...

    nov 10 2011, 11.59pm...

standing in the cold wind, i huddled with the others for warmth, clutching a piece of paper that said 64 on it. They called it out: 'number 64!' i walked briskly into the store, grabbed my copy and smiled at the cashier, then left. a few moments later i was at home, 12.24am, for the next 5 or 6 hours my mind and body experienced harsh joy, interest and nail biting. my dad walks in, 'i think its time for a rest', he said. i didnt want to believe him but i was tired, i climbed into be bed, and grabbed the OXM issue to read before i fell asleep. seeing a knight fighting a giant rat, below the words dark souls caught the last spark of interest i had for the day: "hardest game of all time...japanese...something something..., this looks interesting i thought before i closed my eyes and fell asleep.

    a few months later...

skyrim was getting seriously boring, now that i think about it, i actually hate the game, fighting was sloppy and didnt feel real, magic was nice but got very boring, the questing was boring to; 'fetch this, fetch that' was the representation of the much advertised radiant quest system, i felt like my money was wasted...but why, i didnt know why it was so bad, the core idea (another elder scrolls title) was brilliant but it didnt deliver...

    another few months later...

Shopping online for games ( i had discovered that you can buy stuff online for a lot cheaper, i bought skyrim when i was 15, now that i think about it i was quite ignorant back then), scrolling through various pages on mightyape i went to the daily discounts page. the first game was dark souls only $44 +$3 shipping, reduced from $70. Dark souls? that rings a bell (pun not intended but i realised what i had just written shortly after i did happy ) I decided to get it...

    3 days later..

i put the disc into my xbox drive, not expecting much, biting my finger nails as it loaded. a few minutes later i wsas in the asylum...kills some undead...climbs ladder....gets killed by boss...tries again...gets killed... realises theres a door...runs through door...gets hit by unrealistically slow moving arrow..gets hit by boulder....kills a harder enemy...reads message: press y to hold weapon in two hands...............................................................................'whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?? you can do that??? omg omg omg this is amazing....... ok my interest in this game was building, fast.

2 days (yes TWO days) later

at the boss fog in the church, didnt know you could summon solaire, enters fog, omg boss..... ok he's down to half health, im out of estus.............whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? theres two of them..??.. omg omg omg.....dies. tries again, no time to bite finger nails, must hold controller with both hands...

    many many months later...

i am 16 and a bit now, i dont bite my finger nails any more, after playing dark souls, skyrim is now completely forgotten, most games are quite easy, my grades at school have improved, i have learned to relax when playing, i would like to get into the ds community, i watch epicnamebro and vageta311's videos, i am actualy very good at dark souls now (that is the one thing i will not be humble about), i only die about twice or three time per playthrough, i have memorized almost every enemies attacks and can parry almost everything with ease, it takes me a mere 15 minutes to get to the gargoyles. dark osuls is by far my most favourite game.

    quite recently...

i am browsing stuff on youtube, i accdentally click a video, before i can click the back button, i see a trailer... this looks quite interesting. ......"one of the undead"..... ......*knight in armor*... *feather*.... being almost an expert in ds lore i was thinking one thing, i knew it couldnt be... but there is hope in my heart... *end of trailer* dark souls 2 ....................................................................................................................................................................whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!??!?!?!? omg omg omg omg omgOMG......

    very recently

i am reading the edge article. "more accesible"??? nono this cant be right, dark souls isnt meant to be accessible. And then it hit, the penny dropped...
I realised why skyrim was so bad, so unfinished upon release, so cinematic, why the dlc was very rushed... bethesda was trying to make it more accessible, they wanted it to be seen as an action packed adventure, rather than a haven for elder scrolls fans, this is why it was advertised sooooo much, all of the new features and blah blah blah new this and new that. they were trying to reach a new audience. many have followed suite, borderlands was an amazingly fun game, borderlands 2, it was definitley exciting how the advertised a bazillion guns, but the game got boring really quickly. why did they already have a season pass for dlc, cant they just finish the game and make it fun from the very start.

i think you can see where im going with this, i dont want another sequel spoiled because of accessiblity, maybe im being greedy but i dont want some casual gamer to pickup ds2 and instantly be a master, i dont want ds2 to cater for the casual gamer...

anyway this is my first forum post, ever, so please dont rage at me, if the ending seeems rushed, it is because im getting tired. Sleep

if you read through the whole thing then congratulations, have a cooking, but no seriously, please comment, leave a response or something... Cepzeu out

Being "more accessible" doesn't have to be mean "easier." It certainly can, but that is likely not their intent. Fro isn't stupid; they know that their niche is in games that are more difficult than average.

What "more accessible" is likely to mean is that things are EXPLAINED better. For instance, you talked about getting really excited about finding out you could two-hand your weapon: Imagine if nothing like that had been presented in game at the start. The game would be a lot harder when you have maybe figured out a bit of the controls, and suddenly you have the Asylum Demon on your head.

What they probably want to do is try to prevent situations such as someone getting cursed and not knowing how to cure it, or even why they only have half health. There are spells and numbers in this game that we still don't know exactly how they work; much of it, we had to struggle to figure out. I certainly know that when I was first playing through, I had no idea what the stats on the weapons and stuff meant, because it wasn't explained much.

If you have a look around at some of the other threads here you will see that the details of the original interviews and newer interviews have been elaborated on and from what it presents I think we can assume DKS 2 wont be a "Skyrim" game.

It is supposed to retain the difficulty, atmosphere, and controls. The only major change I see is this "accessibility" that we all fear.

However I'm not too worried as from what I gather the only real changes will be to how the story is presented (perhaps Dark Souls 2 will have a real narrative (this being either a real pro or a massie con)) or perhaps lore is more accessible through dialogue, or something like that.

As a journeyman lorehunter, not being up there with the big names like Tolvo and Shkar and Doughguy, I am a little worried that the lore wont require the same effort to find nor the sense of satisifaction when you theorise and banter over interpretation but I suppose thats only an issue if you love digging down in the Souls games.

All I can say is dont be too worried. DKS2 will be a new direction but not necessarily a bad one.

Oh don't you worry about that, my skeletal little virus sailor. I'll MAKE things to make random assumptions about. If I have to bring back the Lordran Food-Chain discussion to make something, I will!

Haha, I bite my nails lol! But I am a little worried (not too much) about the "more accessible" but since alot of the people who have DkS have gotten used to the mechanics and such are already in "easy mode" because the game is hard mostly because of the learning curve. I can own the gargoyle's at sl 10 with a broadsword +5 silly. The "more accessibility" could mean that they make that learning curve a bit easier. I'm not against that if that is what that means because I already have gotten passed the learning curve, the only thing that would be hard now is that I'm unfamiliar with the new territory and strategies to fight bosses silly

Worry not friend, It wont be anything like Skyrim, what they mean with acessebility is allowing new players to better understand the basics of the game and whats going on in the world, From would not ever take the challenge away, they know its one of the reasons DsK is so awesome.

Oh, also....DEATH TO THE FALSE EMPRAH!

The things I agree with in this post is that Skyrim and Borderlands 2 were both horrible games.

The only good thing about Skyrim was that the leveling wasn't OMFG stupid like in Oblivion.

Once you realize you can have the best gear just by crafting it, dungeon crawling becomes a borefest fast.

skyrim and borderlands 2 were the best games of 2012. DS2 should follow their lead, for sure.

BLASPHEMY!!!! The Dark Gods will not stand for this! ....sorry...ahem!
even though I enjoyed Skyrim (im a Elder Scrolls fan after all) 60-100 hours later it got really boring, I dont even play it anymore, unlike Dark Souls wich still manages to be epic...but borderlands 2? that game had nothing for me....I found it boring since the very start.
I dont want DsK 2 to be similar to any of those.

@ClassicBlaze-Notice ComaPrison's negative rep. He got that by being overly hostile towards anything that even suggested making Dark Souls 2 easier or more like mainstream fantasy video games like Skyrim, then by being so sarcastic that people didn't and don't know he's being sarcastic. He doesn't want it to be like Skyrim. (though I think he'll be sarcastic again and say he does)

Not to rain on your parade or anything..but Skyrim came out in 2011 not 2012 silly . Borderlands 2 was fun for a week, but after that I just couldnt stand playing it anymore, waste of my money really.
Dark Souls wont become another "Skyrim". Fromsoft said they wouldn't lower the difficulty, just make the game more understandable.

But that was before I spent more time appreciating all the great things about Skyrim. 172 hours racked up. Now that I've experienced more of it for myself, I think that the true path forward for the Souls series is by copying Skyrim. We need dragon shouts and dragon souls for sure.

Yes. It's NOT 10 times better. I said it's EASILY at LEAST 10 times better.

    1) Better storytelling
    2) Better fast travel (In DS you can't get it until later in the game, wtf?)
    3) Better quests and quest system (DS doesn't even have a journal, wtf?)
    4) Better quest navigation (compass thingy)
    5) Cooler spells and greater variety of spells (including dragon shouts, etc.)
    6) Better armor/weapon enchantment/upgrade system
    7) Better accessibility (difficulty slider)
    8) Better villains to defeat
    9) Better faction system (instead of covenants, which you can only be in one at a time, in Skyrim you can join all the factions at once)
    10) Long faction/covenant quest lines
    11) Just overall way more immersive
    12) Better save system
    13) Better potion system
    14) Better/more diverse skill trees
    15) Better music/ambient sounds/voice acting
    16) Better combat system

Dark Souls and Demon's Souls honestly just can't compare at all. It would be like comparing a bicycle (Dark Souls/Demon's Souls) to a Ferrari (Skyrim). Just no comparison.

Why not? It's still an investment of time/mouse clicks. There's no reason why I shouldn't be able to get to 100 smithing by putting in all that time.

Yes. It's NOT 10 times better. I said it's EASILY at LEAST 10 times better.

    1) Better storytelling
    2) Better fast travel (In DS you can't get it until later in the game, wtf?)
    3) Better quests and quest system (DS doesn't even have a journal, wtf?)
    4) Better quest navigation (compass thingy)
    5) Cooler spells and greater variety of spells (including dragon shouts, etc.)
    6) Better armor/weapon enchantment/upgrade system
    7) Better accessibility (difficulty slider)
    8) Better villains to defeat
    9) Better faction system (instead of covenants, which you can only be in one at a time, in Skyrim you can join all the factions at once)
    10) Long faction/covenant quest lines
    11) Just overall way more immersive
    12) Better save system
    13) Better potion system
    14) Better/more diverse skill trees
    15) Better music/ambient sounds/voice acting
    16) Better combat system

Dark Souls and Demon's Souls honestly just can't compare at all. It would be like comparing a bicycle (Dark Souls/Demon's Souls) to a Ferrari (Skyrim). Just no comparison.

+1 for sarcasm at it's finest.

Yes, Skyrim is horrible, i could not play more than 25 hours of it, the main quest is the worst of history.
