It was a windy spring afternoon during the year of 2011, I had just been out shopping with my family and we were heading home, we had just one more stop in the local mall to buy some fresh bread or something, i cant remember. (now that i think about it while i write this, my left shift only sometimes works, and i am too lazy to press the right one, so please excuse any gramma errors0.
Anyways, i was standing in the magazine isle, searching for the next issue of official xbox magazine australia and new zealand, i found it. we had finished shopping and were heading home, i was eagerly awaiting the moment when i could lie in my bed, look out the window at the miserable weather, bite my fingernails, and read the new issue, containing a small 3 page preview for skyrim. I was so excited about it, the elder scrolls series was one of my favourites then. i skipped most of the other information, barely glancing at the pictures of a robot, soldier, giant rat, motorbike etc. i finally got to it, the elder scrolls 5 skyrim.
a few days later...
I had decided to preorder skyrim at eb games (worst place ever, skyrim cost 128 NZD to preorder while it only cost 98 nzD at jb hifi) but i was too excited to shop around...
nov 10 2011, 11.59pm...
standing in the cold wind, i huddled with the others for warmth, clutching a piece of paper that said 64 on it. They called it out: 'number 64!' i walked briskly into the store, grabbed my copy and smiled at the cashier, then left. a few moments later i was at home, 12.24am, for the next 5 or 6 hours my mind and body experienced harsh joy, interest and nail biting. my dad walks in, 'i think its time for a rest', he said. i didnt want to believe him but i was tired, i climbed into be bed, and grabbed the OXM issue to read before i fell asleep. seeing a knight fighting a giant rat, below the words dark souls caught the last spark of interest i had for the day: "hardest game of all time...japanese...something something..., this looks interesting i thought before i closed my eyes and fell asleep.
a few months later...
skyrim was getting seriously boring, now that i think about it, i actually hate the game, fighting was sloppy and didnt feel real, magic was nice but got very boring, the questing was boring to; 'fetch this, fetch that' was the representation of the much advertised radiant quest system, i felt like my money was wasted...but why, i didnt know why it was so bad, the core idea (another elder scrolls title) was brilliant but it didnt deliver...
another few months later...
Shopping online for games ( i had discovered that you can buy stuff online for a lot cheaper, i bought skyrim when i was 15, now that i think about it i was quite ignorant back then), scrolling through various pages on mightyape i went to the daily discounts page. the first game was dark souls only $44 +$3 shipping, reduced from $70. Dark souls? that rings a bell (pun not intended but i realised what i had just written shortly after i did ) I decided to get it...
3 days later..
i put the disc into my xbox drive, not expecting much, biting my finger nails as it loaded. a few minutes later i wsas in the asylum...kills some undead...climbs ladder....gets killed by boss...tries again...gets killed... realises theres a door...runs through door...gets hit by unrealistically slow moving arrow..gets hit by boulder....kills a harder enemy...reads message: press y to hold weapon in two hands...............................................................................'whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?? you can do that??? omg omg omg this is amazing....... ok my interest in this game was building, fast.
2 days (yes TWO days) later
at the boss fog in the church, didnt know you could summon solaire, enters fog, omg boss..... ok he's down to half health, im out of estus.............whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? theres two of them..??.. omg omg omg.....dies. tries again, no time to bite finger nails, must hold controller with both hands...
many many months later...
i am 16 and a bit now, i dont bite my finger nails any more, after playing dark souls, skyrim is now completely forgotten, most games are quite easy, my grades at school have improved, i have learned to relax when playing, i would like to get into the ds community, i watch epicnamebro and vageta311's videos, i am actualy very good at dark souls now (that is the one thing i will not be humble about), i only die about twice or three time per playthrough, i have memorized almost every enemies attacks and can parry almost everything with ease, it takes me a mere 15 minutes to get to the gargoyles. dark osuls is by far my most favourite game.
quite recently...
i am browsing stuff on youtube, i accdentally click a video, before i can click the back button, i see a trailer... this looks quite interesting. ......"one of the undead"..... ......*knight in armor*... *feather*.... being almost an expert in ds lore i was thinking one thing, i knew it couldnt be... but there is hope in my heart... *end of trailer* dark souls 2 ....................................................................................................................................................................whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!??!?!?!? omg omg omg omg omgOMG......

i am reading the edge article. "more accesible"??? nono this cant be right, dark souls isnt meant to be accessible. And then it hit, the penny dropped...
I realised why skyrim was so bad, so unfinished upon release, so cinematic, why the dlc was very rushed... bethesda was trying to make it more accessible, they wanted it to be seen as an action packed adventure, rather than a haven for elder scrolls fans, this is why it was advertised sooooo much, all of the new features and blah blah blah new this and new that. they were trying to reach a new audience. many have followed suite, borderlands was an amazingly fun game, borderlands 2, it was definitley exciting how the advertised a bazillion guns, but the game got boring really quickly. why did they already have a season pass for dlc, cant they just finish the game and make it fun from the very start.
i think you can see where im going with this, i dont want another sequel spoiled because of accessiblity, maybe im being greedy but i dont want some casual gamer to pickup ds2 and instantly be a master, i dont want ds2 to cater for the casual gamer...
anyway this is my first forum post, ever, so please dont rage at me, if the ending seeems rushed, it is because im getting tired.
if you read through the whole thing then congratulations, have a cooking, but no seriously, please comment, leave a response or something... Cepzeu out
