    Craftsman Eidas

Post by Tolvo on Thu Jan 17, 2013 9:03 am

So I was just running a toon through Sen's Fortress when a little thing popped into my mind, Craftsman Eidas. A character with next to nothing known about him.

"Repeating crossbow cherished by the weapon craftsman Eidas. Its elaborate design makes it closer to a work of art than a weapon. Intricate mechanism makes heavy damage possible through triple-shot firing of bolts. but in fact each bolt inflicts less damage."-Avelyn

The Avelyn is apparently an invention of his, it fires three bolts in a row quickly. Ask yourself, how many bolts do the traps in sens fire at you? Now, this isn't one of those "Sen is Eidas!" threads. I'm just trying to discuss the idea that he could have had a hand in at least designing that one type of trap.

Consider that Sen's is full of Serpent People as well, which the Duke's also contains. The Duke's being the location with Avelyn in it, as well as the remnants of intricate machinery.

I don't believe this has been discussed before, but if so just point me in the direction of the thread.

Very nice connection, never seen that before. Of course there is the speed difference ut the size of the bolt would mean it requires more time fire between each bolt.

I'm pretty sure Sen isn't an actual name, but it stands for sentinel. Sen's fortress = sentinel's fortress.

Anyways, well noticed, well noticed... The arrow traps clearly shoot slower than Avelyn though, right? I haven't used her a lot.

Well one main thing is that with how the slots are designed, the bolts would either way have to come from the same weapon. There is no way they could stack crossbows and have them fire like that, they would either need large holes or have the crossbows moving behind the walls like a minigun.

Another thing I was looking at was the Silver Knight statues, now this is just wild speculation. I have no basis for this and it's just a personal opinion of mine. Now, the design of them could just be to make the craft work easier, designing stable legs is extremely difficult in making statues, so the long dress leggings would easily decrease the amount of work needed. They do however almost look ceremonial with their long capes and position. The way their arms are posed makes it look like one could fit a spear, or sword, into the hand slots in a presenting manner. Thus perhaps meaning they could act like grave markers for their warriors, or simply more elegant statues with weapons that could be switched out depending on whether you want a sword or spear piece within. This sort of goes with some of the other designs of the world, just look at the Oolacile sanctuary.

I also wonder if perhaps Eidas worked on them as well, though he seems oriented more towards Machinery personally.

EDIT: Yeah it could be sentinel's, I kind of just see the name Sen as one of those things we'll never learn about really.

Not to try being a lore breaker, or anything, but in DeS the traps also shot three botls, so I think that the only reason they do the same in Sen's is because devs found the three bolts to be a effective, yet fair trap.

Considering the Avelyn's design, if Eidas constructed these traps, I think they would have more artistic design as well. Perhaps some carving, etc.

That's a fair point, the whole speculation deal is about trying to find connections if they are intended or not.

Three shots exactly kills most players when they reach Sen's, it also causes a stunlock meaning you are highly likely to die if you are hit once while also letting you have extra time to understand what is killing you and from where.

I need to actually hop onto a toon with Avelyn to compare sound, since I haven't actually used it in a while.

Perhaps, in the lore, speculating, they simply used the blueprints of Eidas' work to create the traps in Sen's if anything. Meaning they didn't care about the artistic side and just wanted an effective weapon.

Due to the firing speed I believe Avelyn;s noise is higher in pitch but they do seem very similar overall.

I'm using Avelyn from sometimes. It fires faster than the traps, but has less Poise damage it seems.

I'm more interested what the name Sen's means, or who is Sen.
I've always assumed that it was the name of one of the gods that designed the fortress.

Andre calls it a proving grounds build by the ancient gods after all. I think Sen's was one of the ways to prove your worth and skill to the gods and gain access to the legendary Anor Londo, so it would only make sense for it to be named after one of the gods.

not a thread for that Sen silly
Its been theorized by Acidic to be the GoW, but if you want more discussion you should make a proper thread for it.

    Well...ehm...eeeergh....
Eidas sure did a good job guys...
I-I mean, look at all the dead Int casters that couldn't get over their ridiculously long casting of Pursuers and instead ate a mouthfull of bolts.

    erf...

So the bolt firing make a very similar noise, it's just the rate of fire which causes a change. If you fire your Avelyn at the same time as one of the traps you'll notice it.

Another thing I'm interested in is a symbol upo nthe Avelyn.

    http://illiweb.com/fa/pbucket.gif

It sort of resembles a butterfly loosely, this sort of pattern with four spreading wings is very common in the game. They are at Sen's, but with a different design.

    http://illiweb.com/fa/pbucket.gif

    http://illiweb.com/fa/pbucket.gif

After going through my Album the closest things I could find to the Avelyn symbol would be a similarity in the symbol to those on the bellies of Basilisks, of the Red Geckos in Darkroot, to the armor of Domhall, and the Crystal Knight armor.

Well, that seems to add something to the connection to Seath-he made the moonlight butterflies, after all.
I think it just looks more like the designs on a violin, though.
As for the traps-I won't fancy up and make a trap noticeable. They're plenty obvious as they are already.

I still beliebe that Sen's Fortress has something with Senhime and the Himeji Castle where she lived.
Apart of that I think it might have some relation.
The avelyn description says that it's a work of art. Sen's Fortress is still a work of art, made of traps.
Maybr Eidas wanted something that he could carry with him in his style, so it must be faster than the fortress trap, which would cause the little difference in the noise.

Maybe the guy in crystal armor at The Duke's Archives is Eidas? I can't remember where I heard it from, but somebody had mentioned that. I makes sense though, the armor is really ornate as well as the shield.

As for Sen's Fortress, I'm not really sure about the name. Frampt even calls it Sen's Fortress, and he seems pretty traditional with names and such. The thing that irks me is the blocked entrance to Anor Londo. The whole lowerworld of Anor Londo, why can't we go there?

I know that New Londo is below Anor Londo, but I don't think that it necessarily means that the lower part has to be off limits. Since you have to kill the Iron Golem to get to Anor Londo, I wonder why they would need to cave the entrance in too.

That was probably an issue of layout that cause them to need the player to be higher up. In regards to the blocked entrance.

Actually you should take a look at Domnhall of Zena's armor, his shoulders have symbols incredibly similar to those on the crystal armor. I'm wondering if perhaps the Crystal Knight is an old Knight of Zena. If you look at his weapon, it is also very old and rusted.

Lower Anor Londo may have been an area they planned on but had to cut, and so got blocked. Or maybe they decided to separate Anor Londo and the Archives for tech reasons, and so they needed to separate the maps. The gargoyles grabbing you seems like a decent way to break the maps without a loading screen.

Come to think of it, Sen's Fortress doesn't really make sense...

If you already have to kill a giant armored monster JUST to get to Anor Londo, why have the mundane traps and such? And if there are snakemen in Sen's Fortress, it would be safe to assume that Seath has some sort of influence there. Not to mention that Griggs and Logan are both encountered there. I think there's more to Sen's Fortress than we thought...

Logan went to Sen's fortress, simply because he was on his way to The Archives, Griggs was a Spy of vinheim, studying Logan's work but could not overcome the traps.

Yeah but since snakemen are kind of Seath's thing then why are they in Sens's Fortress? And the mechanics in Sen's Fortress could be compared to that of the Duke's Archives.
