    Starting Classes? Empty Starting Classes?

    Post by mr_no_face Mon Jan 14, 2013 2:19 am

    So in Demon's Souls the starting classes were as follows:

    Soldier
    Knight
    Hunter
    Priest
    Magician
    Wanderer
    Barbarian
    Temple Knight
    Thief
    Royalty

    And in Dark Souls:

    Warrior
    Knight
    Wanderer
    Thief
    Bandit
    Hunter
    Sorcerer
    Pyromancer
    Cleric
    Deprived

    I thought that Demon's had more classes and a wider variety but I was mistaken when I researched it for the post. Both games have 10 classes to start with. In Demon's each class can eventually do a little bit of everything and be a well playable character. In Dark though if you wanted a mage you chose the sorcerer no buts about it. Each class had an advantage over the others so that one may specialize in certain stats.

    Both games have their uniqueness in starter classes, What are some creative ideas you have for the next title?

    Maybe a far east traveler class with a kodachi?
    I also missed a fencing class (rapier) in dks.

    I was thinking of a class called a Dragonborn. Possibly an undead born with affiliations towards... hahaha I'M JK please take my estus flasks haha. I would like to see some kinda of class similar to the Deprived but taken to the extreme with DS2. On another note after the DLC I think its very possible we could see an alternate sorcerer class. Perhaps so you can one shot people with Dark Bead from the onset of DS2 unfortunately.

    yeah and eastern class that starts with a low level katana weapon would be cool and the royalty was a good class in Demon's but was ultimately the over powered starter because he knew magic already and had decent stats

    if necromancy is implemented in the game there has to be a starter class for it lol and i also want to see the barbarian return (wait it has that's the deprived right?) YES BUT the barbarian could be a class that starts off with the heaviest armor and a halberd like the temple knight from Demon's . maybe not a halberd any other weapon big and slow

    EDIT*** maybe the eastern class with the Katana could start with no shield. Samurai didn't use shield nor did ninja ;D that would be a challenging start although screw with the intro tutorial if they sit and explain the way i think they may.

    The DLC was quite disappointing for me. I expected more instead the turned sorcerers into a top tier class that has to constantly defended against. Not to stray to far from the topic, I hope the next game makes bigger strives to completely differentiate the classes from each other in the beginning. I think it encourages replays and would ad just a better feeling of uniqueness for each class! not saying DS1 didnt already have this

    I agree with you but in Demon's souls you could virtually do everything with every starter class and you'd be golden lol they fixed it with Dark souls but YES i wan to see it done more and the differences of equipment and stats for starter classes need an overhual

    I don't really care if they switch the starting classes up much really. What i wanna see is your race/nationality matter more. East, Zena, Delta Farmer, Carim, etc., all have different weapons and armor to start, in somewhat relation to class chosen. If they are all suppose to be unique in civilization and how their methods of fighting, then let it reflect. Would be a massive expansion in choice and possibility, at least to start a new game anyways. Essentially you'd have, oh let's say 9 for a raw number, different armors for any given Sorcerer, Thief, etc. Weapons as well. Carim folk could all start out with no shield and a Parry Dagger perhaps? Catarinas the Pierce shield? ETc..........

    I want a necromancer class. A Eastern Class (katana). And an Scholar class, this class consists of having very high attunement from the start (for 3 spells), and starts with some kind of support spell from the start. Also a Spellsword would be nice, like 10 dex and 10 STR, 14 INT, and 12 ATT, starts with Magic Shield (Magic Weapon would make it too strong at earlier levels).

    yeah i want to see a hell of a lot more armor in which i actually have to choose for looks rather than choose this ugly *** armor only because its stats are better and maybe different benefits on the side of poison magic and other resistance other than the main physical damage resistance

    I think changing starting gear based on ethnicity sounds really cool. Perhaps as an eastern warrior, start out with an uchikatana. Perhaps they can make shorter versions of those, such as wakizashi and kodachi, and eastern sorcerers and hunters can start with those.
    Let's see... weapons that have an ethnic association are:
    Astora-several divine weapons, swords and spears
    Catarina-greatswords and ultragreatswords, heavy armor
    Carim-shotel and parrying dagger, rapiers, occult weapons
    Thorolund-maces, divine weapons
    Far East-katanas, high slash-defense armor
    Great Swamp-poisonous or bleeding weapons
    Xena-I don't know

    We do have an eastern class , it's called "wanderer" >.>

    I just want all the classes to start at level 1, and to also cap at the same level. I don't like how some classes start off with more stat points than others.

    mr_no_face: I'm not sure what you mean. If I pick pyro or wanderer then at level 120, I pretty much have same stats if I turn them into a Mage. They're actually even slightly better, since they have 12 resistance instead of 8. Not that resitance means anything...

    Anyway, check the stats for yourself if you want. This is my mage. So unless you plan on staying at 11 dex, wanderer is probably the best starting class for a mage.

    id like to see a build your own class function. start at lvl in creator and plus or minus levels till lvl 10 or lower? Would allow more versatile lower levels BUT would in theory allow a lvl 10 to have 40 dex and 10 vit 0 res 0 faith 0 int and 14 str or close to it

    I think that the most important thing is that each class is made to feel completely unique and maybe even be given a unique weapon or item that is difficult to get or use until mid playthrough like the pyomancer gets their flame and the thief got parrying gear and the master key, along with the sorcerer these are the only classes that can do something completely unique for the first quarter of the game.

    Turning the wanderer into more of a samurai style class is a brilliant idea, start them off with a new weaker katana then replace the shield with a special offhand curved sword or even just claws for the left hand to give an absolute offense/skill feel.

    I'd also like to see the cleric/priest abandoned in favor of making the knight into more of a faithful paladin with something similar to a canvas talisman and a divine straight sword like astora's, weapons that aren't the strongest at starter level but would become so at mid levels giving a class that really becomes easier mid game but starts off fairly challenging.

    The extra slot from that merger could allow for a faith int hybrid in the form of a faithless knight or a pardoner style class that would have something like 14 int 12 faith 12 attunement at the cost of 8s and 9s in everything else. It would start with a small weapon like a dagger or shortsword and something like velka's talisman which would never overpower a pure build but would have more options starting out.

    I just took a closer look at my wanderers armor and it seems I made a... mistake. I thought the thing one his left shoulder was a sode, so I always assumed he was just a rogue samurai or something silly

    Still, the scimitar makes him middle eastern-So I was only half wrong happy

    A eastern class that started with a wakizashi and tanto would be nice. Who a shield, when you're badass?

    If we were to replace starting classes with ethnicity, I think it would go a something like this:

    Knight = Astora (obvious)
    Wanderer = Carim, replace scimitar with shotel, and use parrying dagger instead of shield.
    Thief = Far east(Japanese like country), wakizashi and tanto as starting weapons
    Bandit = Far East(new Middle Eastern/Indian country) to me shiva looks more Persian than samuraiish. The Bandit armor also looks Persian. Based on Shiza's Murakumo, I'd say that he has bandit like stats.
    Sorcerer = Vinheim
    Pyromancer = Great Swamp
    Cleric = Thoruland

    Warrior could go to Zena, Caterina, or a new place.
    Hunter would either be mixed with pyromancer and go to the Great Swamp or it would go to five finger delta/another new place.
    Deprived would be from an unknown location, should it return.

    Balder and Bernike where excluded because their knights, like the Anor Lando Knights and Darkwraiths, don't appear to be human.

    They probably plan to introduce some new countries in the sequel so any of these could change to something that matches it better.

    I wouldn't want to replace classes with just using nationalities, i would want them incorporated along with the classes. Maybe make it so some nations don't have certain classes if ya want, in order to keep some things shorter and neater, but im not sure i'd go for that. I'd want my Xenan or Carimi to be able to be whatever the classes are. Could also be a nice thing to have that could possibly really add some flavor to the lore if they so chose.

    Such things would have to be purely aesthetical. I don't think any race or ethnicity should have an advantage over another. When you pick a class, you pick your early game fighting style. I wouldn't like it if anyone from Carim automatically got a shotel, or if some Scottish based ethnicity started with the Claymore. Everyone would just pick the race with the best equipment, instead of doing it solely for role playing purposes.

    I get what you are saying, but i still like the idea of giving you a reason to care about what you choose to be at the start, both ethnically and combat-wise. As far as the weps go, does it matter? Everything has been fairly balanced before. You got magic? We give you a tiny weapon, as so on. Nobody is gonna start with a Claymore, Zweihander, or Uchigatana type weapon, that would be utterly inane. Ya gonna punch people in the tutorial and early stages until you get the stats to use your wep?! lol. That wouldn't be the case.

    The PVPers will always find a way to make something work for them, regardless of any starting class, so this would work well for RP purposes i would think.

    They only reason you should care about your characters ethnicity, is role playing. I disliked genders in Demon's Souls for the same reason; something aesthetic shouldn't effect the way you play the game.

    They could create multiple armors and weapons with the exact stats, but then that's just extra work for From. They could still do it though, I wouldn't mind having multiple long-sword types to choose from.

    Swapping a longsword for a katana(no matter how weak or strong) completely changes the way that class fights, at least until they get a different weapons to choose from.

    Well...you guys can suggest whatever class you like, I just want all of them to be at SL 1, because I always found it weird that some starts at higher SL, even if they have worse stats! so, to balance it out, let only the stats be different, while their SL remains the same.

    Does From actually expect me to reach the level cap just so I can make-up for lost stats? 😕
