    Dragons Dogma Hard Mode DLC

Post by BIG TIME MASTER on Wed Jan 09, 2013 5:33 pm

Start a new game, not your old NG+ or beyond and play it on hard. It's pretty legit. Some sections are a real pain, but if you plan well and journey with trepidation the majority is just hard enough to be thoroughly engaging but not downright frustrating.

Several parts here and there throughout had me DKS raging. I am very pleased with how it worked out, but I think this should have been included from the beginning. All the loading screen "bewares" and tips are actually meaningful now.
If my first playthrough experience was on "hard mode" I would hold the game in the same respect as DKS.

Check it out. If you haven't played the game at all, I highly recommend getting it and playing on hard mode.

And beware the final stairs in the bluemoon tower during the Wyrmking Ring quest. I died there at least 10 tens. Anor Londo archers got nothing on these hombres.

This game could never make it into my 'hall of honour' because of one simple thing. No fast travel. You had to trek, for miles to one point, then to the next and then more running. I swear if they had fast travel the game would be SO much shorter, and the pawns screaming the most random shiz ever. However the hard mode would be an appeal, if I didn't have to sprint from Gran Soren to the other goddamn side of the map just to deliver a letter and sprint all the way back. The enemies aren't varied enough to even make the fights on the way fun, no matter how hard it could be it is really very tedious.

^Fast travel would go against the point of the game. It would make nighttime (the big thing about DD) pointless because you would never have to face it unless you wanted to.

Yeah I understand that, but if you are going to have no fast travel you should at least randomly generate mobs, so you never know what's around the corner. There's nothing more annoying than fighting the same Chimera twice and running into the same group of goblins, in the exact same place. TBH I just couldn't run through the same bland landscape for 15 minutes to get where I wanted to. Getting to the end of the game, for me, was a chore.

I'm in something like NG 5 in Dragon's Dogma, and I can fast travel nearly anywhere because of the way the system works.

And BTM: I know how you feel with the archers. Prostration

I just started the game awhile ago and downloaded the hard mode when I noticed I was breezing through the game.. but when I go to set it it makes it sound like I have to start from the very first mission again to change difficulty? Is this true? I've been too afraid to lose my progress and play on hard, but the games getting way too easy otherwise.

I recommend restarting from hard mode. It's totally worth it.

Letter X, the c0ckatrice (it blanked out the name) was hell! That damn animal petrified my entire party five times until I finally decided I would just have to take him out on my own. My party only lasted long enough to get one of his life bars down (he has 4 or 5 I think) even though I loaded each of them with two secret softeners. So I got on a roof top that he couldn't get me at and just plugged away with my bow for 20 minutes, then out of the blue he dove at me and one shot killed me.

After a break I found myself in the same situation, and finally once I got him down to like 2 and a half health bars I think it was he just flew away. I was happy to be done with the stink-breath yardbird, but no XP?!?

I'm now on the path to the dragon fight and I keep getting a ways into it, then forgetting to save until I am in a fight and can't, and then getting one shotted by a diving vampire harpie or a leaping fire saurian.

And about the no fast travel comment, the game does have fast travel, but just like DKS you don't get it until later in the game, and until much later in the game it is limited.

The games vibe is meant to be of a long, arduous adventure with companions, and convenient fast travel a-la Skyrim would totally ruin that. I think the availability of fast travel plays out perfectly. It forces you to make actual decisions and turns what would be cut and dry delivery quest into real adventures that you have to prepare for. This is the only game besides DKS that has ever put me in desperate situations were I was empty on everything I needed, desperate for some kind of respite, and totally unsure about what lay between me and my destination. To me this game has captured the spirit of adventure as remarkably as any video game has.
By the time you are gearing up and leveling up for your NG+, you should have enough port crystals placed at strategic spots to open the map up pretty well to fast travel. Because of their expense and nonavailability until the endgame, they feel like a well earned reward, and not a cheap convenience that detracts from the games integrity at the expense of appeasing gamers with short attention spans.
Another plus of the lack of fast travel is that in the quiet sections between enemy encounters, you can't help but notice the games beautiful visuals. I so often find myself adjusting the camera as I am running somewhere to get a nice panorama. It really is a beautiful game. Also, traveling to and fro works as grinding sections that are necessary to level up accordingly to keep up with the games enemies in the main quest. It won't matter unless you are on hard mode though, or if you just really suck.

I remember thinking the same thing for the c0ckatrice fight. I didn't even care that I didn't get any XP after 30 minutes of fighting. I just wanted to go resummon my pawns and rest at the inn. lol

Have fun in the last fight. It's long, but very entertaining if I do say so.

I played this game thoroughly last year. I just came back for the hard mode, and glad I did.

I am honestly kind of dreading the Grigori fight, though I am a decked out Ranger so it will be as easy as it can be I suppose. I just know how long the thing takes and that he would probably one shot me with any attack. I also assume that my pawns are going to die early on once we get to the big arena fight with him. We'll see.

More so, I am dreading the post game and the everfall. I plan on sprinting through the post game, and well just see how the everfall goes. I'm not worried too much about the bosses, save for the wyverns because I don't know how I will fare against them yet, but I am worried about the hordes, especially the damn hellhounds.

I always run through post game and for some reason have a large stock of wakestones in my storage that I don't remember how I got. I seemed to enjoy the game even more after doing that.

    Ah, wonderful wonderful wakestones.

Your pawns sometimes gather them while you are slaying beast in the everfall. All sorts of creatures drop the shards, even the mangy wolves.

The thing that really sucks about this game is the single save file and lack of NG+ difficulty increase. I could easily keep this game going until DKSII if it had those two things, or just the NG+ difficulty increase because you can change your character entirely with the secret of metamorphosis.

Yeah, that definitely would have made me play the game longer, but I just made 2 XBL silver accounts for extra pawn sharing goodness to keep me entertained for a while.

To me, hard mode really makes the game come to life.

Before hard mode, I liked this game a lot. I thought it was a lot of fun but a few playthroughs was enough.

With hard mode, this game is right with DKS to me. One caveat though, is that it is only equal to DKS for that one playthrough. NG+, even on hard mode, is still a breeze. It's such a let down, but it does have me looking forward to a sequel and more DLC. I just hope they keep replayability in mind for the sequel.

    Speedrun mode is fun too.

I got 57 minutes on my first go. I was expecting 2 hours, but having strategic portcrystals, the wyrmking ring forgery, and a high level ranger (lvl 70) really helped a lot.

I think I could take off a solid ten minutes. I made a few mistakes, but I don't know if it is worth doing twice, at least not with the actual speedmode run on, because you don't keep any XP or items you get. Now that I know how to do it I can just speed run through a regular playthrough to get to the Everfall postgame if I want.

I'm going on my fourth playthrough since hardmode DLC came out. The game has definitely been revitalized for me.

I seriously need to give Hardmode and Speedrun another go. I played it for about 20 minutes before going back to Dark Souls.

I did around 5 playthroughs, with 40 minutes being my fastest time. Level 9X Assassin kicks tail.

    40 minutes, that's fast!

The Selene outfit for Speedrun was pretty good. The male one is funny but I never use it.

The hardrun grandprize is a letdown, but the mode itself is the reward. I think I am going to gift a bunch of stuff from one pawn to another so I can play it again without losing too many goodies.

I'm only on my second playthrough now. (I rented the game for a month or more, completed one playthrough, then sent it back. I bought it with the money I had after the holidays) I played normal mode because I didn't have my ps3 online during my first playthrough; my second playthrough has been Hard mode, and it really does add to it. I'm about to encounter the post-game hellhounds, though. Ah, almost NOTHING killed me as many times as the hellhounds did in my first playthough. I understand the game much better now, though-and I have the chilling razors/mystic knight enchantments.
