    "Common" Sense isn't common?

Post by WandererReece on Wed Jan 02, 2013 11:48 am

If we leave the forum and go to the game itself we will find more common sense deprived people.

Once I was summoned as a red, and the host did nothing but poke me from behind his shield. I attacked with the shotel, and he kept trying to block it. He eventually died. He summoned me a second time and the same thing happened.
It's obvious you can't block a shotel if you die trying to block it.

There are also many common sense deprived people in real life.

Once I heard about a famous court case. A woman was driving an RV on the highway. She turned on the cruise control and left the drivers seat to make a sandwhich. Obviously the RV crashed. She sued the company because they didn't state you couldn't do that in the manual.

Why is it called common sense if it's not common?

Also, anyone else have stories about common sense deprived people?

Some people are stupid or just didn't think it through very well and actually think its a good idea and some people (myself included) are way to literal to catch that that kind of comment was a joke (if it was indeed a joke)

its not a lack of sense (well, that rv thing was) its just a difference in how people process information.

While it may be obvious to my decidedly logical self that such a spell would be broken as hell, some people don't even consider its effect on the game and focus on their affection for the spell itself.

PS, I really like studying psychology in my spare time.

Hahahah, it's really hard to tell when someone is joking or being sarcastic with only text to go by and no intonation whatsoever. (Which is why I love emoticons!) tongue

Keep in mind that everybody on this forum is from all over the world, so English as a second language is also something to consider.

That does explain the joke, but not the shotel, and definately not the RV.

Also, does anyone else have stories that support the idea that common sense isn't common?

I know it's hard to beat the RV, but there has to be more somewhere.

Some people, some very smart people even, process new information slowly.

Its also possible the player was relatively new and simply couldn't figure out what was going on.

I have no words for the RV incident.

The shotel... I can somewhat relate, as I am constantly goofing up whenever I PvP. Last night, I was dueling in the moonpit and I kept wasting my DMB buff by switching out to my crossbow. I knew what I was doing and several people pointed it out to me as well, but I kept doing it regardless. I've also had several people teach me how to parry and I know how to, but I can never execute it in an actual duel. I think I just panic when PvPing and common sense just goes out the window!

I wouldn't call that silly. I sometimes buff my katana and then switch to my shotel. I know it wastes the buff, but it's the price I pay for switching weapons during a fight. What good is an extra 310 lightning damage when I only hit their shield?

That reminds me of Pike's Peak. There's a road sign that reads something like, "Due to Bigfoot sightings this sign has been posted for your safety." I think it's just a joke, but it looked official.

Also, strollers have warning labels that state, "Don't fold stroller with baby inside." The word "Duh" comes to mind.

In most PS3 game manuals it will state, "Hint: to remove disk press eject button".

When you pressed triangle in the PS3 menu it would give an "eject disk" option. One of the patches changed it to "remove disk". Did people not know what "eject" means?

Tinypantha.....I feel I should clear up the McDonald's coffee lawsuit some. I know it's nitpicking but there's actually a ton of logic in that case. She didn't sue because she dropped hot coffee on herself (well not only that). She sued (and won) because the temperature of the coffee was raised to a level that represented a significantly increased safety risk than was reasonable. She ended up with third degree burns which was one of the deciding factors I believe. I've touched a broiler heating element on accident and only ended up with second degree burns.

This is why the Internet needs a sarcasm button and an idiot-proof button.

That aside, I have moments where I throw common sense out the window. Why? Because I'm about to do something awesome like jump from the roof of a house, onto a trampoline and bounce into an above ground pool with a basketball hoop set on the opposite side of the pool.

AND IT WORKED!..... Somehwhat. I bashed my head on the post after the dunk, but I still made it!

Common sense seems to be lacking in many areas. You be suprised at how many would-be criminals screw themselves up when breaking the law. For example a while back I was reading the paper and came across a piece about how four meth makers got arrested. Turned out two of the makers wanted the rest for themselves and decided to go and tip off the police. Problem was those two were high and managed to themselves arrested with the other two.

I edited the original post because I think it is common sense under the forum guidelines to not criticize other forum members for a perceived lack of common sense.

Oh yeah, this explains the RV story. The shotel story though seems like a genuine lack of common sense. I have a good one regarding me.....

I tried jumping onto a little ledge near the first B. Town bonfire for probably close to an hour, hoping to get juuuuuuuuuuuust the right angle. Silly me, you can't jump on that ledge.

Once I saw this guy get arrested on TV. He was wearing saggy pants (the new hipster look). When he tried to run away his pants fell and triped him.

As for common sense; I was instructing a female friend of mine how to make coffee(it gets worse) over the phone once. I ask her what kind of spoon she's been using and she tells me "a metal one" :|

Broadly speaking common sense to me is judgement and skills that one would expect people to know how to do, like when to keep your mouth shut, or how to write a cheque.

However, this doesn't mean people will always have all of these said characteristics and therefore lack 'common sense'. Truthfully i don't think anyone has complete common sense, simply different aspects of it, which in turn helps shape our personality.

The problem with that logic though is that it makes out the coffee was far too hot. It was probably the same temperature as every other coffee mcdonalds produced, and the fact is your heating element was hotter than the coffee, it's just the coffee spilled probably had more time on her skin to burn through to a 3rd degree burn, which in my opinion is on her for not acting quickly enough.

There's some validity to the length of time but be Serious (yuk yuk). Coffee shouldn't be hot enough to cause third degree burns. Should she have not dropped it? Probably not. Could she have acted faster? Maybe. But there's some liability in thermonuclear coffee too

lol, thermonuclear coffee, you can't argue with a hilarious simile like that one silly

i guess though you find it fine since your culture actively sues anything, while over here we don't sue for anything much except really bad things so i'd naturally find it ridiculous if someone couldn't handle a cup of coffee lol!

then again i've heard stories of people suing someone for putting them in recovery position, essentially ensuring she was safe, but not turning her ring upside down so she got scratched. If I was the judge for that case I would have slapped that woman for being such a retard.

I'd have to see all the details on the cases you mentioned but I can definitely say there used to be a lot of lawsuits over people trying to provide first aid or other care and causing injuries or whatnot (which is common). So instead of "thanks for trying to save my life" it's "f you for breaking a rib give me your money." Thank God we enacted laws to cover people in those situations. I do admit that the USA is big on suing. I just don't like the coffee example since it's a pretty good case of joint liability with more to the story than "some idiot spilled coffee in her lap and got money." It actually would have died without a big settlement but McDonald's fought the joint liability and the judge gave them an "f you" for it kinda.

Biggest one here on topic for lawsuits: A lawyer not only took a case to sue the school in Newtown where the school shooting just was he's gone on record to defend the decision. After some backlash he's stated he's withdrawing the case while he can collect more evidence to pursue it again since he "has more time to refile the case." That's a lack of common sense, class, ethics and human decency. I think he's essentially saying the school should have somehow predicted this kind of scenario. Riiiiiiiiiight

Oh dear.. though then again i'm gonna generalise here but it's kinda showing how some americans can be really strange with situations like this, saying that more guns would be better to protect schools, when really it's less guns that will do it.

Did you know in the 90s in britain, there was a school massacre just like the one experienced in america this year called the dunblane massacre. As a result, legislation passed to make every single firearm illegal in the hands of civilians. There have been no school shootings since and gun crime has dropped dramatically over the last 16 years. I dunno how people on here feel about that but frankly I think it's time america banned guns, you just can't police it effectively while it's still legal to own one.

To my completely unofficial view on it, I'd guess that it's at least partially because America's history with the "Cold Turkey" method of outlawing something hasn't been the best. When we tried it with banning Alcohol, we didn't get clean drivers, safe streets, and less violent citizens. People just starting drinking out of teacups around a table instead of bottles at a bar, and massive organized crime via the Mafia was invented :|
