Netflix A Fun Mix Empty Netflix A Fun Mix

Post by Tolvo Wed Nov 07, 2012 11:20 pm

So while being stuck resting from Surgery, I've come into the possession of Netflix. At first I didn't use it much but then I started searching more and I've found some pretty nice things here.

Currently I've been watching a lot of Supernatural on it. Onto Season 3. A pretty decent show sort of in the same vein as X-Files, but more Mythology/Theology based. For the most part it is pretty accurate to the Mythos with some of their own twists. The special effects are well done for most episodes, though there are a few where they go over the top and it looks goofy. I'd highly recommend it if you like ghost/monster hunting in a show.

I also finally got to watch What Dreams May Come. A drama starring Robin Williams. Actually my new favorite film. It carries themes like the strength of family bonds, learning about the real person behind who you know, and accepting death. A very sad and heart warming film. I'll admit, I cried four times while watching it. I'd extremely recommend this film.

Anyone else have suggestions or things they like, want to talk about? Perhaps things you'd like to see Netflix? Or you could ask me if a series is on Netflix and I could always check.

Dude watch the People vs. George Lucas. It's on there.

Also, if you're up for a good horror flick, watch the movie Lake Mungo. It's one of my favorite films of all time. Also Dead Man, if it's still up is a great great movie.

Yeah I saw the people versus George, I just got sidetracked by Supernatural haha.

I'll check those two out as well, thanks.

I watched that supernatural show also. I thought it was just alright. I'm watching Destination Truth right now. It's kinda like Ghost Hunters with a sense of humor. They've actually found some pretty great evidence too. I found season 3 episode 1 to probably be the most terrifying ghost hunter-esque show I've ever seen.

Hmm, I'll take a look into it. I'm not really a fan of reality TV show ghost hunting, which was why I enjoyed Supernatural. Since it is supposed to be fiction. Is it fiction, or reality TV?

I think it's reenactments isnt it?

Oh wait no, we're each talking about something different. I didn't watch Supernatural. They put up a bunch of Sci-Fi esque cheesy Halloween programming last month and I watched most of it in the background while I've been writing term papers. I was thinking of something else.

Supernatural is basically modern day Van Hellsing if that gives you an idea. It's a story about creature hunters.

I mostly just use Netflix streaming for watching animes and Dr. Who. Dr. Who is a really great show if you like sci-fi, time travel, and aliens. I don't know where you stand on animes, but there are tons of good ones up on Netflix, though I really wish they would add One Piece to streaming because I've been waiting for one of the dvds for almost 6 months now...

I sort of hate anime. Not saying, "Oh you watch anime, I dislike you!" I just don't like anime. Won't be bashing it though.

I've watched a bit of Doctor Who and it was just a bit slow for me, but I may have just gotten some bad episodes. I'll give it another try sometime. Thanks for the suggestion.

Going along with our discussion about watching films in random off-topic, definitely check out Lake Mungo and let me know what you think. It's one of the most well written horror films I've ever seen. Kinda of a play on what makes so many contemporary horror movies really bad, but they do it in such a way that it just gets right inside your psyche and screws with you. I'll explain more fully if you watch it because I don't want to ruin anything for you. But it's written the way I want to some day write a horror film.

I take no offense to you disliking anime, it's certainly not for everyone. As for Dr. Who, I also thought it started off kind of slow, but eventually you just seem to get more interested in the show the more you watch it. It also helps if David Tenant is the Doctor instead of Chris Eccleston (though I still liked Eccleston)

I've heard good things about Dr. Who also. Just one of those things I've never gotten around to watching.
Yeah if your intention is to sleep, at least in the dark, I wouldn't before bed. One particular image in it, as well as the flawless lead up to it, just stuck in my mind for weeks. Literally every time I closed my eyes for like 2 or 3 days after I was seeing this image. So haunting and original and awesome.

I guess I don't hate all anime, but I just hate most anime. Like Akira, I absolutely love.

How is the cinematography Plastic? I find that in horror, that's one of the most important aspects.

It's non-traditional in that sense. It's a play on the whole found footage thing. So you won't get amazing depth in shots like you would in some other films in that way, but it serves its purpose. They couldn't really have accomplished what they accomplished by doing it any other way. It's a big part of what makes it so terrifying. It plays on the expectation of a horror genre consumer expecting to be underwhelmed by a found footage film.

Are you a Jim Jarmusch fan at all? Dead Man is one of his. I just checked and it is still up on streaming. That's another of my favorites, and you'll definitely get traditional cinemagraphic depth out of that one. It's an incredibly beautiful film.

Broken Flowers is another great Jarmusch film that's also up on Netflix right now. That actually might be a better one to start with. It also stars Bill Murray, which is hard to go wrong with.

Ah okay, found footage. Those are usually swing and a miss with me, sort of because the gimmick has kind of worn out.

But I'm not going to just shoot it down, they may do it in some pretty creative ways to break the mold. I'll just have to wait and see.

I feel the exact same way about the whole found footage thing. I enjoyed the original Blair Witch Project, as well as the original Paranormal Activity, but I think outside of that I'd be hard pressed to name another that I liked. At least for anything other than cheap scares.

I just watched the Pianist the other night. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm increasingly impressed by Adrian Brodey.

Oh oh, and speaking of ground breaking horror, Sante Sangre is up right now also. A must for any fan of the genre.

I personally never liked he found footage thing, I think its lame and I hated cloverfield, I could've been good I was so bummed about it. Eternal sunshine is my wife's fave dude, such a good movie, I don't think anything is gonna top American beauty for me, I think it's perfect and the only reason I'm gonna patch skyfall is because Sam mendes is directing(and Javier bardem is in it)
