    GAME OF THE YEAR AWARDS
    Souls Wiki Forums 2012 EDITION

[/center]I'm going for a general poll, so is PS3, Xbox 360 and PC games all together. If you don't see your choice in the poll then select "other" and post your choice.

The ideal procedure is the following:

    1. You vote your GOTY choice, or vote "Other" and post your GOTY choice if you don't see your GOTY in the poll.
    2. You briefly say why it deserves to be GOTY
    3. (Optional but will enrich this thread) Do a brief "special mentions" list of games that are NOT among the Nominees but are still games that none should miss. Only games released in 2012.

I vote for Hotline Miami, the most innovative game of year along with Journey, and Fez. It's an independent 2D isometric almost-rogue-like shooter game. Instead of describing it, I encourage anyone to look it up in YouTube.

Now, I played some of the other nominees way longer than Hotline Miami (like Diablo 3, I played it a lot, I have like 100 hours), but still, I feel that the GOTY should be a game that's not only fun, but that also pushes the boundaries in games, and that feels fresh and new, how long it keeps you playing is almost irrelevant.

Special Mentions of games you shouldn't miss:

    • Chivalry: Medieval Warfare (PC)
    • Lone Survivor (PC)
    • Dragon's Dogma (PS3 and Xbox 360)
    • Legend of Grimrock (PC)

Tough decision man. I feel like this year was the year of the sequels. Not many new IPs. Some interesting ones I could say Kingdoms of Amalur, The Walking Dead and Journey. But I don't know, those games don't define 2012 for me, so it's really a very tough decision lol. I would vote for Natural Selection just because I love the idea of FPS mixed with strategy.

And I'm playing XCOM right now and that game is ridiculously hard and unfair. The concept is awesome but I won't give it game of the year because the combat is based on percentages. These percentages aren't accurate, a 90% shot can miss sometimes and it's annoying as hell. So sorry XCOM I love you but f*** you hahaha.

Journey, for being a fun, unique game from an amazing small time company. It'll stick with me for life.

I vote for Journey. To be really honest, I liked it for being simple and short, yet more fun even than huge complicated games.

You guys that loved Journey, you should really try Hotline Miami, it's not a very "heavy" game, so even if you don't have a powerful computer you should try it. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

If you get disappointed you can come back here and hit me in the head silly

I'm playing X-COM right now I've got to say it can be difficult especially when your faced with harder and harder missions to do.

But I still like my Far Cry 3 over the rest of them.

At the same time I have yet to have played any of the JRPGS that have come out this year. Who knows? Maybe I'll be surprised and one of them might be better than the other games.

Which difficulty are you playing XCOM? I'm on classic/ironman and the game makes fun of me so hard. I'm on a new game for the 16th time after failing. What I really hate is the cover system and the percentages. Everytime I miss a 80% hit I just want to break the stupid game.

Really? That's quite shocking for me, admittedly the game was unfair at points (Especially with the hit percentages yes), but I honestly didn't find it that hard once you grew accustomed to the combat.

Mass Effect 3: The game had stunning visuals, an epic story, amazing character development, and the ending was not even bad; in fact, it was one of the better endings to a game I've seen in a while. I don't understand the grief with the ending. Sure, I can understand the disappointment in not getting an ending suited specifically for one's own character, but video game technology can only do so much.

Sorry for the rant. Anyway, Mass Effect 3 gets my vote because it was just so darn amazing in every aspect (except multiplayer, but really, who cares?).

EDIT: To anyone who owns a PS3, you should definitely buy the Jak and Daxter collection. Those games were my childhood, and I only wished I owned the console so I could play them again. Prostration

Borderlands 2 for me. If only for it being the sole saving grace of the fps genre in this generation.

Well I'm being unkind, but resistance hasn't had a good original game since its first installment

I'd have to go with the Metal Gear Solid HD collection, I think that was 2012. I'm really enjoying playing through Peace Walker on my PS3, along with what Serious said. So far this is the only shooter of 2012 I have actually enjoyed.

I had to vote for Halo 4. I've always been a huge halo fan and i felt that this game was one of the best thus far, and i'm not speaking about the gameplay. No, i'm mainly speaking about the story. I feel that there was a lot of change in it, that it was much more emotional. I really think it fits after all these halo games, because the story really got to me, something that few games manage to do.

I agree. Most shooters fit the same mould. you either kill terrorists or nazis and you always have the same boring wespons. I don't even enjoy games like halo because the guns are disappointingly boring. I want variation in the kinds of guns you find and then also guns which are just cool, though aside from the occasional spartan laser and grav hammer the halo guns are actually pretty dull.

I loved time splitters, it's concept was great because they could both keep the levels varied and interesting while then as a result provide a range of guns and characters for use in multiplayer, such a good series.

I was playing the game on normal since I'm not the biggest strategy gamer, and I refuse to play any game on easy. I was enjoying the difficulty but I would get angry easily when one of my soldiers with a sniper would miss a shot with S.C.O.P.E. on. It's still a fun game though.

Suprisingly I have to say Dragon's Dogma....it's only 7/10 game for me, but honestly I didn't play that many new games this year.
I bet I would love Journey, but I don't own PS3 so no can do...

For the record, despite being a high profile game, Far Cry 3 is actually a stealth based FPS and it does both well, especially considering its entirely first person. (unlike, say, deus ex)

I like samey military shooters, don't get me wrong, but that is definitely not Far Cry 3. Its reasonably challenging on normal and generally fair, if you die its not because you missed a lens flash from 4 miles off and behind you, its because you weren't paying attention and stepped on a sleeping tigers tail.

That said, I'd probably go with dead or alive. It makes me feel like a pervert sometimes, but its a solid, fast paced 3d fighter thats reasonably technical but not overwhelming. I like it for most of the same reasons as dbz burst limit. (street fighter X tekken is what I mean by overwhelming, to many mechanics for me to try and account for at the same time)

I'd honorable mention, but I've been poor this year. far cry and doa are the only new games I've bought this year. I rented others, but didn't like them enough
