    Ring of Physical Protection

Post by Noob-of-Artorias on Sun Dec 23, 2012 2:09 pm

I've never worn this thing for any extended period of time, but last night I swaped it onto my Oscar build for my Wolf ring mainly for **** and giggles...

    ...and it's awesome.

I got hornet ring backstabbed by some joker and barely felt it, it only took down maybe a quarter of my health.

I got hit by a dragon tooth and shook it off like it was nothing...

It basically turns my Elite Knight Armor into a walking Bastille of Badassery.

I like it when I have very weak armor/low health sometimes it can keep me alive.

I'm running a build now that has only 11 VIT and no Favor ring so in a lot of the hard-hitting areas (such as the DLC) I can get OHKO by a lot of things. With that ring, I can maybe escape with a sliver of health.

I always assumed that it's utterly useless.
Whenever I tried it in PvE it did reduce damage I received, but only by such a small margin I never bothered to equip it again. Did it got buffed, or does it actually work in PvP?

I thought backstabs ignored physical defenses... but now that I think about I suppose it makes sense, otherwise why would I make different amount of damage to different people if I'm using the same weapon?

Use it with 99 humanity and full giant's armour and you'll be a walking fortress.

Only weapons would be dung pies, firebombs and throwing knives.

I like using it on builds with less than 225 physical defense. 50 extra defense in any area really does make a difference.

I have used it on a number of low level builds. 50 points in physical defense is nothing to sneeze at.

Giant's +5, Ring of Steel Protection, Blue Tearstone Ring. I can't remember exactly, but when your health gets low you get a physical protection of like 750.

And then people start doing 120 damage with ultra greatsword swings.
It's a thing of true beauty.

Do diminishing returns really kick in that much after ~400?

Yes, especially on a toon with 99 Vit it confuses the hell out of people. I've won many duels with that trick, and people just thought I was hacking.

Ahh, Nothing like WoGing a guy with too much poise to get knocked down. Can you say 3-hit KO?

I once had a theory that the ring of steel protection acted more like physical resistance rather than armor resistance, and thus would defend more against critical attacks (since it was assumed that those attacks ignored armor). My theory started while I was messing around in new londo with cursed weapons, and found that ghosts will completely ignore armor resistance and poise while you are uncursed, but the ring of steel protection will still protect you against their attacks.

So I compared the ring against a combination of armor that gave me exactly 50 phys resistance. I only did some pve tests (against hollows and rapier balder knights), but from the tests I learned that the ring blocked exactly the same amount of damage as the armor.

It would seem to be more logical to use Havel's Ring, but if you already are, then I suppose it can work well.

Even with Havel's ring I can't fastroll, and without it I still midroll, so Havel's ring is completely useless.

I swap between Physical Protection and Wolf.

Even if you can't fastroll with Havel's, you could equip heavier armor and have more defense extra defense than 50 points.

He said it was an Oscar Cosplay build, can't put on heavier armor and still be Oscar of Astora
