Newtown Slayings
Out of respect of the Random Off-Topic thread and many of the people who frequent it and are tired of having to read about the shooting I am creating this dedicated thread.
Personally, I'm all talked out about this tragedy but please, out of respect for your fellow forumnites bring all that depressing talk here.

I don't want to talk about it any more. But I do want to thank you much for creating this thread. I would've done it myself. But I didn't feel like being the one to start the thread.
Thank you!
Thank you!

This was a tragic event. It hits really hard to home for me, since I have a 1st grader for a son. I can't imagine what everyone is going through.

I think this was very tragic just like everyone else, but there are people who may try to take advantage of the situation. Be wary of false charities. I don't know if any exist yet for this event, but I wouldn't be surprised if any showed up. They've appeared in Katrina and a few other tragic places.

There was a guy who came out claiming to be Adam Lanza's babysitter from when he was little who was raising money for some sketchy sounding stuff.

same here reim, i cannot imagine what theyre going through and just thinking about this reall saddens me. Morgan Freeman released a statement about how the media is at fault about this school shootings since ALL the talk about when something like this happens and of course *** crazy people that will never achieve anything in their life would rather be remembered by the guy the killed a lot of people.

Re: Newtown Slayings
That statement released by Morgan Freeman wasn't actually written by him, it was just a random person who added Freeman's name in an attempt to add weight to it, though I agree with the sentiment.
All Americans, and folks from other countries as well, would do themselves a big time favor to cancel there cable subscription and stop watching tv outright. Life is much better when you cut out that crap.
In respect for the youngsters, I think it's best not to say anything. People with kids are reminded to cherish their children but also for the need to raise them properly.

You have a good point there Rant. This is exactly what the pathetic excuse for a human being who shot John Lennon said was his motivation.
My heart goes out to the parents of the children and all the families who have to cope with the fallout from this dreadful day.

Re: Newtown Slayings
I truly feel bad for the families that lost their loved ones, but i'm so frustrated at the fact that no matter where i go, i'm reminded of it. It's all over the internet. I do understand why, but the fact that you(by you, i refer to the internet users), as well as the families have to be reminded about it every single minute, it's just so wrong. I will leave it at that though, as i don't want to post a rant about how i feel over people posting on the internet in this topic.
(Oh, and what i just said, wasn't a complaint about this topic, believe me, it was not about that. I just felt the need to share my thoughts about it all.)
Having said that, i would like to end my post with saying that i hope the families will be able to move on, instead of just losing hope or taking it as far as to killing themselves, whether it be through suicide or just forgetting who they are.

Good point. I've heard about this almost evey time I watch a news station. It'll eventually fade.

Real guns are great, fake video game guns are the reason people do bad things.
So says the NRA. And you guys still believe we're getting anywhere after this tragedy?

Wanna make matters worse? Put armed police in EVERY CAMPUS!
"No one will get hurt if armed police are there" Says the guy who went to a high school with said cops and witnessed them nearly kill a kid with a black arm cast.

Re: Newtown Slayings
The NRA is full of extremist blow hards.
Its not fair to judge rational people by the standards set by groups like that, just as it isn't fair to judge vegetarians or vegans by the standards set by PETA.
The gun violence is a symptom. Nothing will improve if the cause is not identified and minimised. Just as treating a cough and not the cold is unhealthy as the cough is actually the bodys way of clearing the lungs, treating the gun violence without identifying its cause will likely worsen the disease by hiding the need to treat it, because the obvious symptom is gone.

Exactly. It seems like, in America, we are looking to blow issues out of proportion and demand an immediate/easy fix. Gun regulations aren't the cure. We should be looking to solve the problem, not put a temporary, feel good band-aid on it.Forum Pirate wrote:

And, IMO . . . one of the underlying cause it the poor treatment/medical care for the mentally ill.

Parenting can be an issue too, but I don't have a good solution for that. Not without opening some scary doors.

Treatment for the medically ill is hardly an easy thing, no matter what you do as I am not sure of the current state of america's care for them I shall have to step away from that point.reim0027 wrote:

Regarding gun control however I kind of think that while it does not prevent people from doing some horrific things it can at least make it more difficult/less likely for them to gain access to firearms. There has to be a reason behind the massive rate of fire arm death in the US relative to anywhere else in the developed world. :|

Re: Newtown Slayings
We're number ten on the list of countries with the most homicides by gun violence.
Gun Control would actually lower a certain kind of murder in relation to gun violence, but it would not relate to people who are criminals, until after the act. It would make people less likely to in the heat of a moment grab a gun, and kill someone. When they would normally use a knife or something else. Statistically speaking, that's a pretty low number though.
Spree killings may be effected, as a good deal of spree killings have killers that legally obtained their weapons. It's still possible they would just get a gun another way, it could sway away a few of them.
I think that the country needs to tweak it's system of gun control, but I don't really have an opinion of how. People should be able to defend their homes. I'd say that it should be more about who has a gun, such as mentally ill people.
And then we get into healthcare and the like, and my brain starts hurting.
