I saw a tragedy occur last night

Post by Back Lot Basher on Fri Dec 21, 2012 3:33 pm

I was summoned to the Burg for Taurus by a host who was obviously new to the game (we had to show him where the Knight was) Another phantom with high level gear was summoned also. We made our way to Havel, and the other phantom got in a decent backstab. Havel got up and clobbered the host, who tried to block with a cracked wooden shield (yikes). BUT, just as the host was dying, the other phantom backstabbed Havel again and killed him at the same time.

This happened to me once, and Havel's ring vanished. The game must have generated the treasure drop at the same time I died, so when I respawned, it was nowhere to be found. Just bad timing. As a rule, the second a host dies, I quit fighting enemies with important drops. I can't imagine going through the game without access to Havel's ring.

I hope that guy/gall finds out what he is missing before going to far.

It does seem like as the host is going through dying animation the game is still "in play".
I had the reverse happen with 4 kings on what seemed like NG1 or 2, the host catches the backswing from the last king attack and it kills him.
I am able to get off one more swing at that same time that vanquishes the last king.

Host sends me message at how he is bummed out that he messed up. I ask him if he got boss soul. He writes back that he has it.

I’m assuming he did not get the souls from that fight or he would have noticed, but with 4 kings on NG+ getting souls is secondary to actually taking those guys out.

This is a good point, if you coop a lot you need to be mindful of this. I recently killed the Anor Londo titanite demon just as it killed the host, and the guy re-summoned me. We ran back there and the demon was gone but no item drop, which presumably vanished when he died. Luckily I had 2 spare pieces I could drop for him, but it's harder with rare gear particularly in a post-bb glitch world.

It seems like the window is maybe 5 to 10 seconds where the host's fate is sealed, but the game interaction still occurs. Often it's nobody's fault, since the host and the boss may just happen to die at the same time. But still, think of some of the things you stand to lose in situations like this.

Mosquito Power makes a good point about hoping the host knows what he's missing. In hindsight I wished I had thought to msg him about it.

Yes, it's typically the time it takes the host to go through the "dying" animation, when your own coop character can still fight (similar to PvP invasions). The trouble usually comes when you don't realize the host has died -- there are some recognizable death screams that can still warn you if you are out of line of sight, but if they fall off something you may not realize what happened until it's too late. By the time you get the formal death message you are often already committed.

I always have an extra Leo Ring and an extra of Havel's on me for Anor Londo/Burg co-op, because this is sometimes unavoidable. If it happens I msg the host to summon me somewhere else if they want the ring, though they usually don't care about it.

When doing a full Anor Londo co-op run, I was zapping that titanite demon from the second floor for the host, its a neat trick to avoid the fight in that little area... but its a long ways from the second floor to where the drop is (especially if the host wants to go through entire level and not jump through the stairs).
I found that there is just too many ways the host can get killed (not even including invaders) before we get back down there.

I tired to just shoot it till its life was low, but a lot of times the Host would get in on the action and just keep shooting and kill it anyway =/

So now I just keep walking... or run like heck to open up the doors if the host kills it from the second floor.

I did not know this, but I will mind it in the future. I don't summon or get summoned TOO much, but if I do I like to play out my assistance to the host as best as possible, which means not causing him to miss out on things. I usually play the trail/escort role though I will jump to the front in areas like the ceiling above the painted world. Host survival priority!

I've had exactly the same internal debates about whether or not to kill that guy from the balcony. I even tried getting him almost dead and then moving on, but you're right the host or another summon tends to finish them off. The reason I still do it sometimes is because it makes it more likely we'll kill any invaders, since they love to run in there to exploit the demon and instead find themselves cornered. But yeah it's a risk.

When I get summoned I always try to act the as the guardian to the host. I ensure safety and make sure they find the items in the area. I tend to take out anything in front of me by getting a little ahead of the host. Not too far in case of invaders showing up but enough to keep them alive and from healing before the boss. From what I've seen some hosts just go head on into a area only to die. Example 1: that elevator in the township that leads to those two dark mages and the four things. I switch to my bow to take out the mages but half the time the host goes straight in before I can switch out the bow. Though for a while I seen hosts wait till the mages are gone. Ex2: Anor Londo. Well seeing the other post here I'm don't need to explain.

Just a side note: If your on xbox and invade someone in the 120 range who has a phantom that looks like Artorias and drops a prism if you die. Thats me.

I'm a Sunbro and I'd love to put my sign down but I'm afraid that the host will go dashing off before I can do anything. My problem is I use long range arrow attacks a lot which means I take my time.

I once lost a titanite slab when I died at exactly the same time as the Stray Demon in the Asylum, so I know how easy it is to lose important stuff. I was solo at the time though.

Oh, glob. That exact thing happened to me in one of my play throughs. I was pissed.
