They used those catalysts before the Flame of Chaos sprouted when the Witch of Izalith tried to copy the First Flame. Her failure caused Chaos to spread, creating Pyromancy. Before then, I guess they used Flame sorcery, similar to Demon's Souls.

yeah the description says something along the line of "used for fire sorceries.....long forgotten" i personally love the catalystt but hate how un-viable it is

I wish the Izalith Catalyst could cast Pyromancies, there is no reason it shouldn't and it would make it much more viable.
Actually, one thing I miss is the ability for one talisman/catalyst to cast multiple types of magic. You could easily balance it out w/ less power and/or less casts.

If the catalyst could cast Pyros,it would be much like the Talisman of Beasts in DeS. That would be so OP.

well at 200 adjust for pyro and 180 for magic i wouldn't be THAT bad.
