If you could sheathe your weapon it could also add another attack or two.
Something like the Iaito heavy attack except quick.

I was thinking Souls should have an En guard gesture for duels, and it'd be cool if it was tied to the act of drawing your weapon from its sheath.

Icelfrit, is your signature a reference to Moraltach, Cuhulain's sea-monster-bone spear?

Yes, hold X or Triangle to sheathe sounds good. L3 is reserved for strafe mode silly

Moraltach (Great Fury) is the sword of Aengus and is paired with another sword Beagalltach (Little Fury).
My signature references the Gae Bolg, a spear owned by Scathach and then given to Cu Cuchulainn.
Edit: Which is the bone spear.

I think either a gesture or holding triangle both work. Doesn't really matter if it's in the gesture menu IMO because you will only sheathe your weapon in low-threat moments. But triangle makes sense because it's already the 1H/2H swap. Now it would be 1H/2H/No-Hand.

I don't want it to be X, R3 or a combination of 2 buttons because I think all those things could be used to expand our combat options, whereas sheathing is pretty useless outside of talking to NPCs or doing it for effect.

I agree, sheathing weapons would be a nice addition for Machinima type videos, and to signal to an online player you are friendly.
    Good idea!

Sheating weapons would add a nice bit of realism to the game and It would come in handy while role playing.

-I want X in Dark Souls II.
-Does it affect the gameplay? Y/N

    Y- OK lets discuss.
N- Just make it happen. Customization, adding cool stuff and just improving the game experience is always welcome.

You can already remove HUD, with sheating weapons you could basicly create a movie, with proper soundtrack happy

I've done a topic about sheating weapons, limited weapon slots and visible equipment (so that we can see all of the characters weapons at once), so you can't just take out a Zwei from your pocket all of a sudden (well you can menu swap) and sheating for roleplaying and perhaps even combat purposes. Unsheating a weapon can be used to fight, just take a look at Iaito. But I mostly want it for role playing purposes. I bothers me to have my Chaos Blade out all of the time, especially when there's a nice sheath handing around my waist, forever alone and the only way to use it is to equip an offhanded bow (main reason why I bother using bows tbh).
