A question about saves Empty A question about saves

Post by theznake Sat Dec 15, 2012 12:47 am

Lately i've seeing several messages regarding corrupted saves and lost toons, so i was wondering, does it happen to anyone? or is it due to people messin'roud with their gamesaves. Or is it a console issue...or just Karma...

I wouldn't like to start a character all over, so i'd like to know if there's a way to prevent it.

    Thanks

On your screen while the game is saving a little flame appears in the top right corner. If you shut down your console while that flame is showing it can corrupt your save.

Or just quit out of the game improperly. I accidentally did it the other night. I was half asleep, actually had fallen asleep sitting at a bonfire with the controller in my hand for a good half an hour first, and I woke up and just quit out of the game instead of quitting to the menu then quitting to the XMB, and I got a warning when I reloaded the game the next day that I could have corrupted my saves.

LOOOOOOOOL at you sleeping, I fell asleep at the bonfire once but I woke up the next day and just continued playing...crazy addiction.

on-topic: Most of the time I just turn my PS3 off and I always get the warning message but I've never had a corrupt save in any of my dark souls history in my life so, maybe it is just karma?

That's what happens towards the end of the semester. Full time job + full time student + full time video game addiction = me asleep with a controller in my hand pretty regularly.

PS+ is your friend. Cloud storage for save data. Never loose a good build/game file again.

But as to, why...karma...but also bad luck or poor choices. Power outages are hard to avoid, but i'd just as soon not play during a bad storm for instance. (I know other possibilities for an outage.) Or people just dashboarding may do it to. I try and quit out the menu all the time, but i've done it plenty the "wrong" way and been fine so far.

Just get PS+, its worth it in so many ways.

I see, so it is better to be cautious. I did quit the game once right away and it gave me the warning next time i loaded, so i always do it by the menu since then.

Nevertheless, you´re right, it is better to have the PS+ back up, it costs, but it's worth it. And the power outrages are hard to evade as well.

Dashboarding is like....quiting the game without using the in game quit menu. When you use the playstation/xbox button to quit the game.

Ps+ is the best thing in the world. Cost money per year or month. And you get online game save file backups. As well as exclusive betas, demos early. Oh, and FREE games. Sometimes they suck sometimes they are great. But its free, essentially. If you have a playstation 3, you should have playstation plus subscription. You can find it on the playstation store.

I would say that on the XBox at least dashboarding has a very low chance of corruption.

I used to do speedruns when you could glitch into the Kiln and I never ever got a corrupt save.

But losing power is something completely different. I'm not sure why games don't make backups of saves on the hard drive. The game could easily make 2 save files that act as one save on the XBox.

Here is how it would work. The reason saves get corrupted is because the game is stopped while opening and rewriting a save file. Here is how it would work. The game is saving so it opens save number 1 and rewrites it. Then it opens and rewrites save number 2. Since both are not open at the same time it would be impossible to completely lose a save. The worst thing that would happen is you would have to revert back to an old save.
