    About the new Souls director...

Post by Shindori on Fri Dec 14, 2012 6:34 am

I assume you guys know Miyazaki isn't the director anymore. I hear a lot of people complain to hell about it. I was going to as well.. then I learned who it was.. it's the man who's directed a bunch of Monster Hunter titles. first time I played Dark Souls, I thought, "Hey, this is a lot like Monster Hunter!" Then they slammed us with the DLC.. and damn, that Guardian reminds me a lot of Narugacuga from Monster hunter... quite a lot, actually. I'm not surprised they went with this guy. In fact, I'm kinda glad it was him, rather than some other jackass. I can rest easy knowing the fate of the series is in his hands. <3

Instead of hating/loving the new director, I would rather know why isn't Miyazaki director anymore. He seemd to do one hell of a job so far, so why fix something, that clearly isn't broken?

Well.. Im thinking they clearly made a good choice.. I mean look at all the love the DLC got, mainly the bosses because they were a hell of a lot more challenging. Imagine the whole game with bosses like that, not just hard hitters that can easily be killed. If by fixing you mean bigger challenge, then by all means fix it. I find myself loving it so much more now knowing the direction in which it's headed.

    I can't say that man.
All the bosses in DLC are one and the same type. Fast and very aggressive. They're very similar to Gwyn, which isn't bad, but they also make non DLC bosses pale in comparison. I'm not saying that's bad, I'm saying they're very similar to each other, while non DLC bosses have more variety. Without variety, it's just plain boring, no matter the challenge.

Normal mobs are much better, but still those tree enemies in Royal Wood and Townfolk, seem very similar as well. Still, all of them, maybe with exception of Chained Undead are all very dodge oriented, shields just don't play there. The DkS2 trailer features no shields as well.
I'm just afraid of a change in concept if it goes this way even further.
I always liked that no matter how threating and imposing my enemy looked I could rely on my shield to save my life.

Additionally, a lot of stuff from the DLC is getting frowned upon and I fear that it may get even worse. Just look at the hate Dark Sorceries get.

I don't know how much of this is the new directors doing, if any at all.
But if the next Souls game is largely like the DLC, I'm sure I won't like it as much as I like DS and DkS.

Some choices on the DLC were downright bad:

    - NPCs that had incomplete story/meaning (Ciaran, Chester...)
    - The dumbed down messages like "let there be light" and "I wish Hawkeye was here"
    - Dark Magic has some problems...mainly a lag issue though

I liked the DLC and new bosses were cool, but I don't want this direction with the things listed above. I love Monster Hunter games though, so I think they can't go too much wrong with the sequel.

    Yes these two.

I mean, we know a lot about Ciaran, but she still has like what? Three, or four sentences and runs off with, or without the soul. I was expecting her to try and kill me, preferably assassinate me later in the game if I refuse to give her the soul. She just vanished, with Tracers and all, which made me kinda pissed as I really wanted them. Well What is it

Hawkeye is her exact opposite, he has many dialogues and explains to you most of the stuff going on there. That suprised me, as it was first time in both Souls game, that I met an NPC, that told me everything about wtf is going on. Shrug

"Let there be light" was ok, as I would've NEVER tried to use any light source in there. If it was in Chasm, I could understand it, as it's pretty dark and creepy in there, but in Township, in middle of the day? That's :dung: .

I completely agree about the "I wish Hawkeye was here" message and it's placement. It's so far in Kalameets are, you can hardly get there alive to read it, not to mention making it back. When I see a goddamn dragon flying above me, I know I'm screwed, so the last thing I will worry about is some message, which is more than likely just gonna say
    "Praise the sun"

I also always thought that those messages are written by Oscar as he progressed on his own journey through Lordran. But since one half of the Pendant is in players hands and other is in Chester, how the hell did he get there to write messages for you?
    Smells like :dung: to me.

    Rubbish.
When I picked it up I though two things.
"Why the f*ck is there a second one, if I can trade it only one time and it has no use outside of Snuggly trade?!"
"Obvious trap. Enemies behind me I bet, I can't hope for a contraption, or enviromental traps outside of Sen's...
Likely won't be a challeneg anyway"
One Townfolk? Not even a caster? C'mon! Look Skyward

I was happy to see Mimics there though, although the one in upper Township was very poorly placed. As soon as I saw the chet, it hit me. Mimic for sure.
The other one was much better. :mask-averice:
Yes, he managed to chew on me. Thank god for 1800 HP, or it would be embarassing. I saw somebody's bloodstain there later. tongue
It's hilarious to watch the phantom float in air and waving it's legs, like he's trying to fly. lol!

On the other hand what I liked, was the placement of the Carvings (although I hate Carvings themselves).

You meet one of those damn casters, showing you his back, so you just backstab the :dung: out of him and nicely kick him from the ledge (shouting SPARTA!!! is optional) and you get the "I'm sorry" Carving. That totally made me laugh.

Beating first Mimic nets a "Well done" Carving, which wasn't as rewarding, but still a nice idea.

Jumping down for a treasure in Chasm, getting surrounded by Humanity enemies, one tends to think for himself "I'm f*cked!" and then you find "Help me!" Carving. That was also very well placed and made me chuckle as I died instead of raging. happy

    Sorry about long post? sad
    I got excited. bounce

Ciaran's and Hawkeye Gough storyline's weren't incomplete, they just weren't even started.

    Look at Artorias story.

    - Alivna mentions it (In a main game. Pre-DLC)
    - ALOT Of item descriptions
    - Elizabeth dialogue

ETC. We can also say that why story of Ornstein wasn't finished? How he became Dragon Slayer? Because it wasn't even started. We got plain item descriptions and From is basically saying : finish the story how you like it.

    That's why I love From

dude, i love monster hunter, mh: freedom 2 was so damn hard i loved it, compared to demon's/dark souls theyre easy mode. i think most people keep complaining about the new director is because they havent played monster hunter which imo is a lot more hardcore than the souls series. im hopeful that he is gonna do a good job and i really hope the bosses are like moster hunter, dark souls bosses were kinda meh, i want them to be aggresive. yes the dlc, was kinda lame since FROM didnt wanna make it, the bosses were cool though, and i think the reason miyazaki stepped down is because dark souls WILL disappoint a lot of people since its not gonna be anything new much like dark souls was, demon's souls was a new experience but dark souls didnt change much, it was more polished but other than that it was pretty much the same.

    Warning incoming rant!

    *facepalm*

People, if you like MH, go play MH. This isn't MH, this is DkS. I like it for being DkS and want it to stay DkS.

Nobody in his right mind can want MH in DkS, no matter how much they think MH is good, or similar to DkS, because they are different games, made by different people.

I don't know about you, but I like DkS for being what it is, if they change that, then it won't be DkS anymore and I won't like it as I do now.

They already f*cking ruined FF, RE and DMC for me. I grew up on them and dropped them once they decided to change them, because they lost what I liked about them and it's not a single concpet, or a feature, it's the game as a whole, every aspect of it.

I don't want DkS to share their fate...

@sentinel would you want some new features to be in plemented to the souls series or do you want it to just be another cod and for them to be making the same game over and over again? dark souls didnt change much and the next one needs a new director to take it in a different directions otherwise its gonna get pepetitive as hell which is why i think miyazaki stepped down because he feel hes not gonna live up to the hype. this i s gonna happen wether people like it or not, once the new game comes out maybe rent it and if you dont like it dont buyt it.

indeed, change for change's sake is not usually a good thing.

that said, it's okay for the franchise to grow and take a new direction as long as the heart of the game and it's core themes remain intact. the new Bond movies are an excellent example of this (not every one likes them, but i love the new direction Bond is taking).

actually, i almost don't want a true sequel to Dark Souls, i think i would rather have another "spiritual successor" than another Dark Souls. so having new directors might be a good thing, it might also be bad though. i'll wait until i see some game play footage to pass judgement.

    Yes!
    That's exactly what I want.
F*ck changes, they never did anything good for my favourite series so far. Changes are xactly what killed FF, RE, DMC and many other games and movies for me, so I will rather have repetitive game, instead of risking that they will kill it once again. I like them for what they are now, so if I will get it served to me time and time again, I will still love it, becuase it will remain what I love. But if it changes, it becomes something different altogetther and stops being the thing I fell in love with.

I'm not against changes themselves, there are times when change is needed. Like when mechanics are broken, graphics need an upgrade for new HW etc. But changing something that evidently works and works very well, changing it for the sake of change is stupid and never did anything good.

Okay guys, I think it's worth noting that the DLC bosses were intentionally made to be harder than the main game, they're a bonus challenge to guys who know their way around the main game, hence why it's only accessible after a) you rescue dusk, something which is easily missable and b) you have to place the lord vessel.

On the monster hunter thing, there are similarities, even regular enemies are a threat, you don't get spoon fed and the game you hunt are a similar challenge to souls bosses. I think there are things that dark souls could take from monster hunter, but at the same time the originality needs to be kept.

From what I can tell, the new director had been brought in to implement a few changes and shake things up, though we can't know if this is good or bad we can't tell yet, but I have faith the new director will implement some interesting changes that naturally will divide opinion. Hopefully it won't go the way of dead space and lose its feel.

I agree with rant. Miyazaki is only an obstacle for the series. I already wrote that the whole DkS was complete thinking is bullsh!t. The guy creates an whole world with awesome lore and characters, then doesn't want to do anything more about it. It's like the Lord of the Rings writer say oh let me write an awesome story about the elves, but he just writes one book because he feels it's complete and that's it. Really dude? I say welcome MH director!!!!!

We can't even be sure that this is the guy from the MH games. FruitPunchNinja found someone with the exact same name who already worked with Fromsoft and directed a game not released out of Japan called ACE. Even if it is the guy from MH, I'm quite sure he wasn't the director and he was just involved with some CG cutscenes among other things, which is not something I'd be looking to have implemented into the souls series

Ironic you say that, because Tolkien never actually wanted to write The Lord of the rings trilogy first, he was pretty much forced into it because his book about elves, simallrion (I think) wasn't enough like hobbit for publishers to really wanna do it.

I don't mind them bringing in new things for Dark Souls II providing it isn't made easier and there
becomes a ton of merchants selling a million different things.

I like the scavenging and the lack of items, materials etc.
So by all means mix abit of Monster Hunter in, but don't move away from what
    Dark Souls is..

And amp up the difficulty, CoD will always be there for people to fall back on. winking

CoD keeps same directors and gameplay mechanics for years: people *****.

Souls series does same thing, Sentinel basically goes bananas.

I agree, to an extent, with 'Don't fix what isn't broke'; but games need to evolve and NOT stay stagnant. Why can't people see that?

There's no guarantee that the evolution will be good, just like there's no guarantee that it'll be worse; but the alternative is lazy, hypocritical on both the consumer and the developers part, and poor design.

Either it's perfectly fine that games recycle the same concepts year after year, or it's perfectly fine for games to change direction.

Hey guys! I just passed to clarify: there are 2 directors, not 1, Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura.

And Tomohiro Shibuya it's NOT the director of Monter Hunter games, that's another guy, he is an employee of From Software that worked on another series of From called Another Century, it's genre is action-mech. And don't think of it as a big jump, because Miyazaki also worked only on Armored Core games before stepping into Demon's Souls.

I'm just saying that it's possible, that this time, the game won't be telling me "YOU DIED", but I will be telling it to the game.

If the new directors end up ruining Dark Souls, there's a high possibility that they will be found dead, with a nice Rapier replicas, connected to a tasser for the Lightning +5 effect, stuck in their backs and one of their ears cut off. lol!
