The Flamberg is a hidden jewel Empty The Flamberg is a hidden jewel

Post by Rynn Mon Dec 10, 2012 6:14 pm

This is a greatsword, it weighs 6 pounds, requires 16 strength and 14 dex. D/C scaling. It's light attacks are the classic greatsword swings, and it's got astounding range If it's two handed, you have the 53 poise light attack at one of the highest possible ranges a greatsword can achieve.

The Flamberge has the lowest AR of all greatswords. This is made up for by how it has a bleed. Yes, a greatsword with a bleeding effect, how sub-par, right?

In the recent DLC patch, the light attacks of Greatswords and Curved greatswords were both nerfed in speed to avoid infinite stunlocking. This means that most greatswords had their utility greatly dropped, however, this instead serves to make the Flamberge overpowered. The Flamberg's R2 is the light attack of a Curved Greatsword. However, it takes 68 poise (need confirmation) to avoid being stunned, and unlike Curved Greatswords, the speed of the blow has not been touched. This permits the Flamberge to infinitely stunlock with it's heavy attack, an attack that does 35% more damage then it's light attack, and procs bleed far quicker then it's light attack. All this in a six pound weapon that can be weilded with minimum requirements and turned into a lightning weapon.

So, higher poise breakpoint, inbetween 63 and 71, dead angling, high speed, and bleeding. The only downside to this is high stamina cost, so you'll never be trapped for more then 5 swings, but that's enough to kill you.

I've also heard people say that you might be able to DA with it, but i don't know if this is true.

I've never had much trouble against it, but i suspect that my opponents weren't using it correctly either.

EDIT. I missed the part where you said that you can DA with it silly

Shhh Rynn, don't let everyone know! Anyways, I don't think curved greatswords have been nerfed at all. My mura is still as viciously effective at stunlocking as it was before the patch. I've heard they were, but it seems to be a misinformed rumor.

ive always liked it, really good gs and it has bleed. scales well with dex(B fully upgraded) but its a little too short for me but a great gs for a dex nonetheless.

I used to think that. Didn't used it for the longest time, then decided to try it out, and I'm really liking it. The R2's have such a unique, wicked feel, though I'm not nearly as impressed with their reach as Rynn is.

My main guy right now is in Thorn Armor, Black Iron Helm, and Dark gaunts/leggings, and he's 2-handing a +15 Flamberge with an Occult Flamberge on his back. Looks so very cool.

    Easy to parry.

    Only downside IMO

I've been using this greatsword for a long time, and its great for enchanting with Int or faith

Yeah, it can be a beast. I remember king's elemental Flameberge vitality build. That was powerful, and he was a PITA to kill (sky high vitality).

thing is it does do a different damage type than other gs's, it does slash damage like a katana and only gets about 30 more ar at 40 dex, this makes it a bit less effective against heavy armors than other gs's... still better than a kat imo because of the poise break.

I use it sometimes, it's alright. The R2 is very easy to parry and punish. I also agree with rant that the range is sub par. The damage is not very good, but the bleed can be worth it especially if you have it paired with another faster bleed weapon. Looks cool with certain set ups, i thought it looked a lot cooler in DeS though.

Agreed, it looked much cooler and more like the real thing. The new one looks like a giant kris or something.

speaking of a kris... i hope that shows up in the next game! seriously though the flamberge reminds me of the sword from soul reaver just without the bada$$ hilt

I've been using it in PvP recently (see SL100 build in my sig) and it's a beastly weapon. The AR isn't the greatest, but when you can combo 3 two-handed strong attacks in a row, and possibly cause bleeding in the process, you've got yourself one of the deadliest weapons in the game. Getting parried is also a non-issue since the strong attacks are great at dead angling. The GS nerf has definitely made the flamberg stand out as a strong weapon.

Exactly dude, I like to keep a few little tricks and stuff to myself when it comes to PvP. I've been playing for a long time, and I like the little advantages I've earned by knowing a few things most don't, like the proper timing for hitting the end of a roll with various attacks, or the timing for getting counters with a halberd against most attacks. (It still takes a ton of practice though). A lot of people never learn the joy of Straightsword combat and how quickly you can turn the tables on an overconfident opponent, or they've never learned what can be done with a Greatsword backstep attack. Little gems in movesets go unpracticed and unused until you innovate and learn their situations, and there are plenty of great combos that go unknown and unheard of.

On topic, the Flamberge has always stood out to me as a strong weapon. Can't believe it took you guys this long to notice it o_o.

I've been downrepped for the opinion before, but I think it encourages diversity. People should go out and find their own style rather than being able to look up all the good stuff online. It makes people learn for themselves and discover new things.

I have many secrets, but this didn't stay one of them because I play with a lot of the jerk type players, and since I'm nice and give insight into how I'm beating them, my most obvious tricks like this one spread like wildfire into the X-box community a lot of the time... Like how a lot of the forest gankers are very good at not getting counter backstabbed now.

I'm of the opinion that hiding stuff doesn't really benefit anyone in the long run. If we as the community want to expand the meta game and each get better at PvP as a whole then we all need to keep sharing tech so we can continue to learn new strats against the tech, and be forced to adapt continually in this long endless cycle. This is what happens for the most part in the fighting game community, and as a result the way those games are played can change rapidly in short amounts of time. It's quite interesting.

Also, had to give the Flamberge a go because of the topic since I'd never messed with it, and it's been fun! I'm not good with it since I don't typically use Greatswords, but after only recently getting some experience with the Mura lately the Flamberge R2 makes me feel a bit at home.

I've liked being able to combo and dead angle running 2H R1 with following R2's, into stunlock heaven. You can get something like 1300HP if the guy can't poise through the first hit, it's really nice!

I always called the flamberge "the greatsword for Dex builds."

Seeing as how I never make dex builds, i have never used it!
