    Which greatsword is more versatile?

Post by Kuragari on Mon Dec 10, 2012 11:05 am

I realise it kind of depends on the persons play style but, i've been favoring the bastard sword when it comes to greatswords. so far i've found they upgrade better and both light and heavy attacks are far more usefull.

Now, is there a better great sword to use? i like the claymore but not sure i've found a good enough upgrade and i could be wrong but i think it consumes more stamina then the bastard sword.

Also, which stright sword is best? i've been leaning toward the broadsword...

Great Sword - Claymore, It has a little bit less AR than the Bastard but alot more reach, uses the same stamina and has a much better moveset (1H R2).

Straight Sword - Balder Swag sword, Pretty much explains itself, has a great move set, awesome damage with its 2H R2 Attack, and is very fast with it.

I had to give a + to this.

Even though I'm sick of seeing everybody carry Claymore and BSS around, I can't argue with them being the best in their respective weapon class.

One could argue that the MLGS is better than Claymore (has that special attack and does pure magic dmg) it is only for mages though. I myself hate how it looks.

i definitely like the Moonlight Greatsword more than the Claymore, but i can only use it if i am playing a INT build, which i haven't done for a long time, so i still find the Claymore to be more versatile.

I always liked the bastard sword more than the claymore. the R2 chop is just a lot more satisfying than the claymore's R2 stab.

i would go with msgs, with 27str two handed you get 521 ar, yo ucan also take it up to 40str and get the most out of one handing it and two handing it. compared to the bastard/clay its better since you dont have to waste points on both dex and str, an yes we all know the cly has arguably the best moveset. mlgs is good ad has scray phantom range, that thing is bigger than a spear but if you go up against gmb youre scrwed, the r2 leaves yo open for a bs and you can get parried. i suggest you try all of them then go with whatever moveset you like better.

    mage: mlgs

    ar/poise: msgs

    turtle/fast roll: claymore

Yes it is happy, but the Zwei is an Ultra class greatsword.

I use the Cursed Artorious for PVE because it looks cool. Always been curious about the Bastard Sword, it just seemed to have less range than that claymore.

Clay for me, all the way, I think one of the sweetest weps in the game, with the most useful moveset.

When it comes to versatility, it's either the Claymore or the Flamberg. Both of them have amazing movesets that can tackle and job with a simple change of your approach. Overall, I'd say the Claymore has the better moveset for fluidly killing monsters, but the Flamberg can deal a lot more damage over a short period of time with it's heavy attacks and bleeds.

Since both are 6 pounds, try taking both if you're planning elementals.

glgs is still good, its r2's are rather slow but its got good reach. oh and the obsidian gs is nice but it seems to have negative phantom range whenever i use it....

Being that my main's build is a 40 str 40 dex its damn near impossible for me to find any weapon that tops the Claymore for me.

If we're really talking pure "versatility", then I still have to say the claymore wins, but for several reasons. Since it scales off both dex and strength, it works on an above average number of builds. Also, since it isn't an ultra-greatsword, the attacks tend to be fast enough to be workable, while still retaining pretty much best in class of range.

Now if we're talking movesets, this is why the claymore really does it for me. That one handed R2 is just absolutely wicked with its range, and does a pretty beastly amount of damage for how quick it comes out. Also, having both an area of effect R1 and a focused R2 brings up the versatility further. Then if you two hand the thing, the R1 attacks are absolutely brutal and have a very nice overhead effect that significantly reduces the impact of the Z coordinate that can sometimes plague certain movesets (cough, my old halberd, cough). I'm not a huge fan of the 2 handed R2, as I feel like it could use a little more range, and the dash attack feels slow to me, but everything else is just gorgeous.

The zweihander actually comes close for me as a second, because those sweeping attacks just hit absolutely EVERYTHING, and the damage is just wow. The washing pole, while not technically a greatsword behaves as one and is probably the second best fit for my build, and while it does less damage per hit than my claymore, it ends up evening out because of bleed, and the attacks often feel safer to me.

Style wise, though, the zweihander wins, especially one handing it. I just feel so ridiculous swinging that thing around like it's a shortsword.

love the responses. i knew alot of people would go with the claymore, i have a couple kind of upgraded ones but, man i jus hate how huge it is lol it takes alittle longer for recovery when swinging it, or maybe it just seems like it. the recovery with the bastard has actually kept me from death when being invaded. i only mention the bastard cause i have like 4 of them fully upgraded. the claymore just feels like it has more recovery time, maybe it's cause of the size and it just looks like it takes longer, i dunno.

i've not messed around with the Flamberg, i may have to check it out...

and i'm almost afraid to try the zweihander lol the recovery on that is really bad, so i guess i could get used to it but the weight not in my range at the moment, reason i was interested in greatswords.

actually i just messed aorund wiht the claymore and the recovery is the same, only real difference is heavy attack and range and the claymore i think has alittle more punch to it

Here's the thing about heavy weapons - Never spam. Try to get good hits if you can. Hit once and roll away. The Claymore's moveset is beautiful but i kinda hate it for PvE. It just doesn't feel right for me. When i use it, something about it really irks the hell out of me. In PvP, it's fine.

well i've done very well with the bastard sword. part of the reason i like the bastard is cause of the heavy attack, if i were to switch to the claymore i'll die alot thinking i'm using the bastard lol

i have the iron shield and lots of stamina so i can take plenty of hits and still swing, and vice versa

but i;ve been invaded by someone using the claymore, and against my bastard, the claymore wins, the pushback on the claymore is just nasty vs my bastard. i just hate resorting to one attack cause i can't find a practical use for the other, like with the black knight halberd

idk i used to LOVE the claymore, was my go to sword but all it can do is poke and r1 spam, it gets boring really fast and its predictable, to the point where I can parry it on a guess :| if I had to pick a non-mage gs id have to go to the Grave Lord sword, now thats a POKE!!! and it inflicts toxic. It's really really really under rated, ppl see low scale and go "oh nvmd" but at 16 str 14 dex it has almost 500 AR anyway so it can be used with ANY build and for w/e reason i've never been parried while using it big grin
