Difference between shield and weapon parrying? Empty Difference between shield and weapon parrying?

Post by M. Bison Sat Dec 08, 2012 8:08 pm

I've been playing Dark Souls for many months, but have never found an answer to this. I'm building a dual wielding character, so I'd like to know. Is there any difference between parrying with a shield and parrying with a weapon (i.e. parrying dagger, rapier, etc.)? The damage seems to be exactly the same. If this is the case, what's the point of using a weapon to parry?

Nothing really, except for that you get a fast attack instead of a block.

There are different kinds of parrys though. There's medium, fast and special.
All medium shields except for the heater shield have the medium parry, all small shields and the heater shield have fast parry, and the buckler/target shield/parrying knife have special parry.
I think weapons that can parry (except for the parrying knife) all have fast parry, i'm not sure though.

And what's the difference between the fast, medium, and special parry? With how long I've been playing I should really know this, but I don't.....

The fast parry is....fast. You can "spam" it faster than the medium parry, but there's not a big difference between fast and medium.
Special parry has a long parry window, but it also takes a lot longer for the animation to end. So you might be punished if you whiff it (If you PvP) It also has a larger partial parry window (partial parry is when you don't parry them, but you negate some of the damage).

I prefer fast parry, but i can also go with medium parry. My only gripe with the special parry is that the 2 shields that can do it don't block 100% physical damage.

But to answer you original post. There's no real difference, except for that you can do a quick attack instead of a block.

Oh yeah, i forgot about one thing. You can't do setup parries with a weapon (when you block the first hit and parry the second one). So you'll have to rely on either parrying the first hit or tanking it with poise and parrying the second one.

Glad i could help big grin

Also, getting partial parries with a weapon demolishes your stamina, because of their low stability.
